Squat Rack Curls Quatro

My favorite lifting story ever:

A few years ago, a buddy of mine and I were both back from college for the long Thanksgiving weekend. We wanted to get a workout in, but didn’t want to pay the “walk-in” fee at any of the gyms around here. Luckily, I happened to have a bar with some plates in the basement, so we brought that outside and did some cleans, front squats, presses, etc. I live in a townhouse, so we are basically doing this in the parking lot.

Getting some weird looks yes, but we at least have some decent size on us, so the people that walked by could tell what we were doing. Everybody except for one old lady. I see her approaching from a distance with that creepy smile old people get when they are going to say something profoundly dumb. She’s old, so it takes her a good 25 seconds to get within talking distance. As she approaches, she looks at us (and mind you, my buddy is mid-overhead press), and says, “Well… what are you building?”

My mind spins for a second, wondering if I had mistaken my barbell for a jigsaw and the plates for 2 x 4s. Nope, just a barbell and plates. I stammer for a second, my mind spinning into the void. My buddy however, didn’t miss a beat. In his best Arnold impersonation, he simply goes, “Mah-suhhhhhls” and keeps going with his set. She stared at us for a few more seconds, then weeble-wobbled away.

I still giggle to myself thinking about that.

Or option 3: blow the place up?

Odd story, I used to work at a gym over-nights as an operations manager (glorified janitor). I was fired for joking about “blowing the building up on my way out.” My department head actually said that was the reason. I asked her if she was trying to test this theory? She even said she didn’t believe I would do it but there were other things in my file (there weren’t when I asked to see my file).

Ultimately it was probably a decent case of wrongful firing but for 8 bucks and hour and crappy hours it wasn’t worth the time. Then I started my own company and I got a job as a business analyst. She was fired 3 months later. Oh how karma works.

And for a “Squat Rack Tard” story:

I was staying at the beach a couple summers ago with some family. I have an older cousin who into bodybuilding and a former college football player himself, and we were there for a few days, so we didn’t want to miss a workout. We find the local chain-gym (Planet Fitness I think?) and get a day pass. We start our workout, warmup, etc., then go to squats.

We work up to 405, him doing sets of 3 and, at that time, I was only doing singles with that weight. After our second set, we both go to the water fountain and sit down for a second on the bench nearby.

We had both spent most of our lifting at school weightrooms for varsity athletes, as I was still in school, and he graduated but trained at a more hardcore gym near him. So we did not understand the rule that I see many of you reading this thread have learned the hard way: never take your eyes off your bar at a commercial gym. Apparently somebody thought we were done and started stripping the bar. One side at a time.

We both look up in time to see him pulling the 4th plate off the left side of the bar. “Noooooo,” escapes my throat just as the bar slides toward the weighted side, almost clipping the idiot in the process and causing the single loudest noise I think I have ever heard in my life.

Of course, WE were asked to leave.

I honestly find this hard to believe. I’ve seen some retarded people in my days, but unless the two of you were being complete jackasses and you left that out, I call BS.

Today I witnessed plate humping…2 guys standing side by side (to their credit, they weren’t getting in anybody’s way or doing this in the squat rack), doing some sort of super super fast bent over row at a 45 degree angle, with 25 or 35 lbs plates, at a rate of about 2-3 rows per second, no shit. I was gonna videotape their next set just for lulz, but apparently that was their last set, very sad.

I was doing weighted dips one time…and this kid next to me felt it necessary to advise me how putting extra weight on when doing dips will fuck up my BACK big time. errr thanks bro!

Theres this fucking guy at my gym and he is a monster…not like Hyooge but like a yeti bigfoot type… and all he does is put 4 plates on the HS preacher curl ask for someone to spot him by pushing the stack up, and then proceeds to yell at the person helping by saying “I GOT IT GET OFF” he then turns into Gene Simmons and starts sticking his toungue out while rocking out some reps to some “rocking tunes” Hes a classic look at how much I 1/2 rep guy…he never does anything else. One time he asked me to spot him and I replied quickly with a simple “no” and he was incredulous…fuck that jagoff

It wouldnâ??t be fair to make fun of other people at my gym if I didnâ??t call myself out. I was doing some pin rows last Saturday in the cage. These tend to take a lot out of me, so I finished up behind me is the smith machine with a good looking spanish broad doing some shoulder press (chubby with a fat ass, just how I like it) so instead paying attention to what I was doing unracking the plates I just oggled her like a creepy fuck. Because of this I only unracked 3plts on one side and the bar decided to go off kilter and hit me in my chin and made me bite my toungue thus making mouth bleed. She started turning red for me.

Im so fucking cool.

Oh I have, and I’ve been to one a couple times…but there’s a difference between “we’re kicking you out for being loud” and “we’re kicking you out because someone did something stupid with your weights”. It MIGHT be true…then again, there’s also a chance that all these 150 lbs kids here in the RMP forum claiming 500+ lbs squats but never backing them up with videos are telling the truth, right?

That’s the one. The idiot who unracked and dumped the weight also was asked to leave. But we were told that it was unsafe to leave all that weight on there. My first and only time in a Planet Fitness. Thank god for home gyms.

Oh I get this all the time. By the same trainer.

All his arguments are that I’ll screw up my back, he doesn’t say why or anything else. He says this on every single thing I do, even Pull-Ups, so one day I asked him out of irritation, “WHAT won’t screw my back then ?” ( emphasis on the “what”), he says “The exercises I’ll prescribe for you, but you gotta pay me.” I can’t express in words the anger that I felt this day.

Oh, and this was the same guy, who sat in the safety pins of the squat rack, right in front of me, while I was box squatting 460 and missed the rep. Throwing the weight on the floor was never more satisfying, the look of panic on his face when I got up from the box was priceless.

^ what a fucking dick!

I just dont understand why people feel necessary to give people advice, I dont say a word unless someone asks. Even if someone is really doing something wrong…I dont care, do you, just leave me alone and let me really hurt my back with my dips and pullups.

I like the new avvie.

Randomness over.

Thanks nikki!

I agree 100%

Being an engineering university, the gym is on the moderate side rather than HYOOG but I rarely have competition for the oly platform/cage. However, the entire gym pretty much (except the HS machines) is enclosed by a 100m track. Imagine a highschool track, 1/4 the size, with a gym in the middle instead of a football field.

I see kids running all the time, which hurts because I’m an ex-distance runner. They do their 65lb bench press, get up, and run 100m laps. In puffy, unlaced, tongue-sticking-out, high-top sneakers. I was deadlifting today and I saw a kid lose his shoe while he was trying to sprint.

I smiled like an idiot at him trying to play it off.
I think I know where you’re talking about. NJIT right? I used to work out there a few years ago when I did grad school. A sorry place for athletes…
Yeah lol, exactly the school. Theres a few respectable bigger asian guys who squat/dead/mil press but nine of then of them are a bench/bi’s crew. On a good day they’ll shrug in the cage.
I knew the description sounded familiar, then I saw your in NJ and then I knew for sure. I didn’t know about the gym upstairs until my last year there and used to lift in the hot dirty dingy basement in that building. It was a free weight room. Is that still there? I love the idea of track around the gym. Pretty cool for sprints year round.

Now that makes a BIT more sense, at least he was asked to leave too. Well, as far as PF goes anyways haha. You should’ve given them a basic rundown of physics and gravity and shit and explained why that guy being an idiot has nothing to do with you squatting…but I digress.

I live by this sentiment in all aspects of life. Unless I’m getting paid to advise someone (insurance) or someone asks for my opinion, I never give out advice. I hate know it all dipshits and besides, people by and large learn by doing. If someone is meant to learn something, let them experience it. I mean hell if I see a little kid doing something that is going to cause themselves or other imminent harm, then I’ll step in. People will respect you more and they will learn what they need to in thier own time.

V

People like to tell me all the time that goodmornings and box squats are bad for my back and that I shouldn’t lift heavy every week. Usually, I just think of the most complicated reply I can think of until they give me the ‘wut???’ look and I just nod my head in affirmation of what I just said and I might say something like yep or something like that. The key is just to throw a bunch of anatomy and weightlifting jargon out there while still being mostly truthful.

I know it’s been probably posted a lot of times but I never thought I’d see this in my gym.

Big guy and Small Fat Guy duo. Big guy sets up the bench, puts 132 on the bar, short guy spots him. Then the Big guy starts struggling with the weight at the second rep and the Small Guy actually rows it for him, several times. When they are done, they move to the incline and do the same thing, with less weight, then the decline, then floor presses. I couldn’t help watching, the small guy was getting an epic back training and the big guy was actually weaker than him!

This same big guy also tried to dissuade a hot vixen from doing Romanian Deads. He said the classic “bad for your back” to which she replied with: “Excuse me, I know what I’m doing”. I never wanted to kiss a women so bad.
