Squat Rack Curls 3.0

on another note I did some curls in a rack today [/quote]

I think you know what time it is.

today i was squatting at my gym, fairly hardcore PL gym, saw one of the 3 tall skinny guys who was in working chest and biceps doing behind the back shrugs on the curl machine. needless to say i didn’t ask any of these toolbags for a spot on squats.

watched a PT try and teach someone how to do squats. the guy couldn’t even get to parallel without a bar or keep his back straight then the PT sticks 130lbs on the guys back and he just face plants into the rack. next we get what i think was ment to be power cleans but there was no leg drive. this went on for about half an hour

I heard a personal trainer talking to some new client with was bigger than him on the ā€œcorrectā€ way to bulk. He sorta bragged about going from 150 to 160 without ā€œeating a bunch of pizza and cheeseburgersā€. I believe he said it took him a year o.O

While it was certainly irresponsible of that PT to load to 45’s on that bar with such an inexperienced squatter, it’s actually pretty common among the non-lifting population to be unable to hit parallel without some sort of weighted aid(I’m also assuming no rounding of the back here). Many people’s hamstrings just aren’t flexible enough for that yet. I know mine weren’t when I started.

Anyways, in one of the gyms I lift that, there’s a dude about 17 there most days I am and always around the same time(we have a similar schedule, big deal). We don’t really talk but are pretty courteous to each other. Now he likes to to some strange exercises and never makes any progression on any of them, ever.
There’s a belt in there that tapers pretty narrow at the front that he uses regularly for his ā€˜deadlifts’. His ā€˜deadlifts’ are twenty rep sets with 110lbs using one hell of a bounce of the floor with a very(very) rounded back and about 0.2% quad contribution. Add to that, the belt is worn to shit. He would actually have more support from a belt of his pants because the material might not bend so easily.

Meh, he’s unlikely to hurt himself at that weight anyways and I’ve never once seen him increase the weight or reps of any of his exercises.

LOL!
That’s so retarded that it couldn’t possibly be true.

This shit drives me fuckin’ nuts. So I’m doing a heavy set on bench that I feel more comfortable doing with someone spotting me. So I scan the gym for the guy who looks like he knows how to spot a motherfucker. There’s this guy doing static holds on the bench next to me using a decent amount of weight. He looks like he works out type of thing. So, after he finishes his set, I ask him for a spot real quick. I was ready to go so no standing around bs.

I give him these instructions, pretty simple: ā€œI’m going for as many as I can grind out. I only want help if I get in trouble. Ok?ā€ He nods, I pop in my ear buds and get under the bar. I de-rack the weight and I have a controled descent, and I start to lift and the bars going up fine, a little slow but it’s clear I don’t need any help. What does this fucker do? Fucking grabs the god damn bar and lifts.

I rack that weight and he says, ā€œDude you had at least two more in ya.ā€ So I say, ā€œWhat part of ā€˜I only want help if I get in trouble’ didn’t you understand? You fuckin’ ruined my lift.ā€ He gets all butt hurt and goes to do his static holds. I felt like running over there and pushing on the bar. What a cock-tart.

Moral of the story: Just because they look like they know how to spot someone doesn’t mean they do…

Same thing happened to me on my heavy set of narrow-grip. Spotter was a bug guy, I explained to him that I was pausing on my chest and didn’t need help unless the bar started moving back towards my chest. I got two reps no problem, attempted a third, and as it comes off my chest easily and is moving through the middle he decides to grab it for no apparent reason. Asshole.

I’ve learned the best thing to say to ensure a good spot is ā€œdont fucking touch the bar unless I call for itā€ and then force them to give a verbal acknowledgement…things like ā€œif i get in troubleā€ or ā€œbar moving backā€ are too subjective…I’ve never been so hard up that there was no way I could call for it and that leaves nothing to interpretation.

One RM’s can be pretty intense. You mean like a really basic signal like shaking one’s head as to say no or something like that right?

Or you can yell out, ā€œTake it! Take it all!ā€

No…have you really ever maxed out so hard that you couldnt lower the bar down to your chest and say ā€œgrab itā€? If you can’t do this, you are probably trying to max way beyond your capacity, which is dumb.

Yes and made the lift too.

A couple of months ago, I was deadlifting, and this mid-aged woman came up to me and told me that I wasn’t allowed to ā€œbangā€ the weight off the ground. I initially had three thoughts:

1.) No one has ever gave me lip about the noise. It’s only a problem if you think it is.
2.) I’m not ā€œbangingā€ anything; it’s a controlled drop.
3.) You don’t work here, so who the fuck are you to tell me how to lift? Why can’t you just leave me alone?

For Christ’s sake, I thought that this was a gym, not a library. Okay, to be fair, there is a sign that says you can’t drop free weights, but that’s like the sign that says you can’t lower the platform using plates on the assisted dip/pull up machines: no one follows the rule or cares about it. Hell, I’ve seen gym staff drop DB’s after benching them, and what I do can’t even be considered a drop IMO.

So, I try to set it down softer, but the lady has the nerve to go get a staff member. So, the staff guy comes up to me (who is actually a friend of mine) and tells me that it sucks, but if people bitch, they have to comply. I was almost done with deads anyway, so whatever.

The next week I’m deadlifting again and the same lady is there. She starts talking to another staff member (who is also a friend of mine), and I’m pretty sure he basically told her to STFU. She never bothered me since.

This lady was such a busybody; it wasn’t just me she trolled, but other people as well. This is the same lady that does the leg press with no weight, the leg extension with very little weight, dumbbell curls with pink DB’s. Honestly, what do those type of gym patrons hope to get out of working out like that? They aren’t even close to putting forth a serious effort, and if you’re so distracted by what others are doing, then you’re not into your own workout enough.

I think I’ll do this from now on. I had my top set of bench ruined today by a dodgy spotter who grabbed the bar at the wrong time. Nice guy, but for fucks sake, doesn’t anyone do reps by themselves anymore?

Since we are on the subject of spotting bench, I was working inclines yesterday when I slowed a bit on the ascent. Out of nowhere, some Romanian soldier grabs the bar and racks it. I couldn’t bring myself to get upset, though. He’s been watching me in the gym for a couple of weeks now, and while a lil disconcerting, I’ve found him trying out some of the big lifts I do. So, all in all, kinda cool. But, ruined set.

Well you’re obviously disrupting the deep level of concentration she needs to do he leg extensions. Those things are harder than they look.
