A new assortment of oly bars have shown up at my gym. They feel as though they are 55lbs though, so I ask the guy working behind the counter before I choose my weights wrong. He says, “I don’t know.” Then walks over, picks it up, and says…“Wow! That’s heavy!..I’d say…like 30lbs…”
Does your gym have scales?
Weigh it there; but be prepared for some strange looks.
lol, that’s what I did. They appeared to weigh 50, whereas the old ones in the gym, which are definitely 45 weighed in at only 40. So by calibration, they were in fact 55.

Electronic scales?
Possibly a plot by the gym staff so that when customers weigh themselves they exclaim “OMG! I lost 5 pounds, this gym is so good”
In a gym with no scale, I tied a bar to one end of a rope and some weights to the other end, put the rope over the rotating end of the bar in a smith machine and adjusted the weight til I reached an equilibrium.

Yeah, I’m crazy.
if the bar is uncalibrated the weights are more than likely uncalibrated as well

Unlikely, gyms may buy cheap non-standard bars that don’t weigh 45 pounds but it’s unlikely that they will buy weight plates that have “45lbs” written on them that don’t weigh 45 pounds.
Squat Rack Win - a few weeks ago I taught a guy I dont see often how to do reverse grip bench press. I didnt see him again till today…where he was doing reverse grip bench with perfect form.

Likely, much in the same way they have bent mirrors and yellowish lights to make you look wider and more tanned.

Or is that just my gym?

Yeah, there’s one wall of mirrors in my gym which is ever so slightly convex, it definitely makes you look bigger, but so subtle that you don’t look stretched out. Combine that with high lighting (without big windows, meaning that most of the downwards light highlights the contours of your muscles) and probably a pump with increased vascularity from the workout and you get this false representation of you being reflected in the mirror.
Son of a bitch, my main gym is currently under renovations and I must say, up to this point they’ve been rather accommodating with not being in the way, removing equipment, or inconveniencing members, but I went in on Sunday for deadlifts and for the life of me I could not find the squat rack. Obviously, I wasn’t going to need that day but it still had me confused and a little worried that it was gone forever.
The renovators had moved it into a corner and it was surrounded by all their ladders, tools, etc. I approached a manager about it just so I could get an idea of when it might be moved back or if a new one was coming in to take it’s place by Wednesday. He wasn’t sure, but he also didn’t see why I had an issue because the gym has two smith machines and I could use those for squats…

My gym has bent mirrors near the machines and free weights so people look bigger, wider, and the lighting is set up so that you look jacked. However, in the locker room, right in front of the scale, there is an angled mirror that actually makes you look fat/worse. I’ll try to get a picture today.
went to a large commercial gym at lunch today to squat and it there were more people squatting than benching. on a monday?
there were four other guys squatting. the deepest was hitting reps with 275 about 2 inches above parallel. good enough i guess.
one hit about 185 with about a 4 inch range of motion.
one hit 255 with about a 6 inch rom
one guy went up to 425 with a 6 inch rom. the bar slid down his back at about 315 but someone saved him. everytime he did a set, i would move away. he was an accident waiting to happen. terrible form. safety bars were below his hips when he started and then he raised them up to his lower ribs. he could have raised them another 4 inches and would not have hit the pins while squatting. after back squats, he worked up to 315 on a front squat. same 6 inch rom.
hw was looking at me like he was going to ask for a spot. if he did, i would have had to say no. i dont want to get hurt spotting a numb nut.
There were tow guys about 20 years old and one guy was appointing himself the Mentor to the other guy. Lot sof funny stuff:
1- Incline bench, the Protege says “Did I just do 50lbs?!” Mentor: “no, it was 95…we include the bar”
2- DB Flyes, the Mentor tells the Protege “It’s not about numbers…it’s about reps.” I guess numbers meant weight???
3- Wrist Curls, Mentor: “You should see a ripple (in the forearm)like this” He then flexes his forearm, I don;t really see much happening " You (to the Protege) don’t have it because you just started"
