Alexus, are you new to T-Nation or to lifting in general? This is the thread where lifters go to vent about stupid shit that happens in the gym. SRC is kind of a metaphor. Use the logs for serious things, come to Get a Life for a laugh. Sometimes they mix, but this thread is about laughing and venting. If you don’t understand how using the only squat rack in the gym is annoying, my guess is you either have been very lucky with your training or you are very new. You’ll probably notice that when people “inappropriately” complain about others on this thread, they’ll get made fun. Kinda forum self-moderation.
The pic above is to try to save my post from being too serious, like…
x2
Today I saw a guy on lat pulldown and each rep he leaned back and pulled to his stomach
bad form for lat pulldown, but if he doing some already named pulldown???
thats the question!!!

Let me beat Alexus to the punch and post a response for her in regards to your picture:
Why are you making fun of this guy? If you have a problem with this exercise, why not go ask him why he is doing it and what muscles it is working? The only thing I see wrong with this picture is that he is not doing this in the squat rack to get away from everyone else with the big-bad weights swinging around.
Alexus, just because you may not agree (because you don’t understand) with accepted gym etiquette, doesn’t mean you aren’t considered to be an asshole when you violate these rules.
In other words, “Lighten up Francis!” this is an internet forum to vent about stupid crap we see in the gym. If you don’t like it, or think it is mean, don’t read.
I was lifting barefoot yesterday and had an older lady come up to me and say it was pretty cold outside so I should better put shoes on before leaving…I told her “thanks, will do.”

I don’t actually see why it matters if people do either of these so long as when you tell them politely that you need the equipment between their sets (for its intended purpose) they move along and / or work in in a way that isn’t disruptive.

I’ll leave that sit for a moment in case there is a lightbulb moment reading comprehension-wise.
Against gym etiquette… Funny how if you ask different people what things are and what things aren’t how you will get different answers. It strikes me that the bulk of this thread is comprised of people trying to make themselves feel like hard core smart training bad asses by running down other people. I do have a sense of humor, actually, but I’ll admit I don’t find it funny when people run down others in order to have a laugh or make themselves feel superior.
People do do weird stuff in the gym. Stupid shit, even. Maybe it takes some kind of smarts to man up and politely request ‘hey dude I’m wanting to do some squats and I need the rack in order to do those safely - mind if I work in?’

(hint: I understood your point, I just think you’re wrong and (probably) a noob who should learn to STFU and learn rather than posting stupid shit). You come across as a college kid who just started training, but you said you’re older… why the stupid attitude? Just trolling? Keep the hate strong! (I guess)

Umm…I see that all the time in my gym. On the release they almost stand completely up before pulling down, sitting down, and leaning back all at the same time.
Well, Monday = international bench press day. Why was everyone I saw using way too much weight and about 1/2 ROM? Seriously, like 4 or 5 different people did this today.

That hit the nail on the head. This thread is mostly for entertainment. If you don’t like the humor, don’t participate.

As far as this comment goes, I have a log too. Believe or not, it is possible to notice people doing stupid shit in the gym and still progress just fine. Progress doesn’t need to happen in a vacuum.
For lifting etiquette to prevail, those who don’t conform should be offered friendly advice about how best to use the space around them and to make life fair for others. Have to say I agree with Alexus on this. Although I don’t fully understand why people do some of the strange things they do in the gym, as long as it doesn’t cause me or anyone else any problems, then go ahead! However, a few cheery tips may help prevent injuries and improve the atmosphere of any gym! That is not to say I don’t enjoy the amusing antics of some gym-goers; I am sure they find my face going red when squatting or the weird grunts while snatching/clean-and-jerking pretty funny too. I also hate to think what competitive runners think when I go outside to stretch the legs!

This is just cute, lol. She wanted to mother you…
Last week at the gym there was this older lady who I saw using three different machines: seated ab, shoulder press and lat pulldown(I work out in a very small gym). Now, I hear a lot about crappy ROM 1/4, 1/8, etc… and I certainly see it just about everyday, however I have never seen someone use an un-exaggerated 1-2 inch ROM on every exercise as this lady did. I began to wonder why she was even bothering to “lift” with that small of a ROM.

Exactly, “you don’t actually see why it matters…”. You don’t get it. That is the gym etiquette part.
Let me explain it to you. It is considered rude and a dickish move to utilize equipment (and thus occupy) for exercises that don’t require the equipment. No piece of gym equipment gets abused this way more than the squat rack, usually for bicep or wrist curls.
Let’s just say you work out at a gym with one squat rack. You are the only person working out in the entire gym and you desire to do some bicep curls. Rather than go get a straight bar, load it with weight and put the bar on the ground, you feel it is too much work to actually lift the bar the 2 feet off the ground each time you want to do a set…so you use the squat rack to do your curls. Now someone else comes in the gym and wants to squat. Yes, they could absolutely come up to you and ask if you could “move out of the way so they can use the piece of equipment for it’s intended use.”
Now here is the important part, so pay attention, this is where the etiquette come in…they shouldn’t have to.
A person will generally go from exercise to exercise by first looking for equipment that is not in use. Then, depending on their program and next exercise, will only ask someone to work in, or ask how many sets they have left, if there is no equipment available for their next intended exercise. By curling in the squat rack you are basically forcing anyone who wants to squat to come up to you and ask you to move, or how many more sets you have, or if you can work in, all because you are too lazy to lift a bar 2 feet off the floor. You aren’t curling so much weight that you can’t lift it off the floor.
There is a couple that “works out” occasionally during the early morning shift at my gym. They walk around the weight room HOLDING HANDS. He seems to work out while she waits and watches then they HOLD HANDS walking around for awhile til he picks another exercise to do. I have seen them do this on at least three separate occasions and find it EXTREMELY STRANGE.
