Squat Rack Curls 2011

Why do skinny people LOVE wrist curls? Can’t their time be better spent doing something else. Every single college kid at my gym does them.

The girls track team at my college trains the same time as me. I swear to god, one of the skinny female runners was doing wrist curls. I know it wasn’t her idea because she was following a sheet given to her by the team trainer.

I’ll play the devil’s advocate here a bit.

In my particular case, doing wrist curls for a week or two ONCE IN A WHILE has helped me with some problems I’ve been having with my left wrist for the last couple of years. So some people might be doing them for that reason, even if they’re skinny.

I doubt the entire running team would need them, though…

Well you were doing them for rehab purposes which is fine
although I highly doubt that 85% of skinny gym goers have bilateral wrist flexion problems

Saw a guy at the gym doing squats, but something looked off. Besides the fact that he was only going down about 1/4 (which isn’t that shocking, of course) he was basically squatting by bending his knees foward, and when they got as far foward as they could, pushing back up. It looked like an ankle flexsion exercise. I wasn’t surprised by the painful expression on his face as he did them.

I do bizarre looking exercises for rehabbing my knee and back. But, I don’t see an entire gym full of people doing them along with me every day. Yeah, if I mocked one kid for doing them then fair point.

You’re right the entire track team doesn’t need them at all. Maybe it can help the throwers? But to just put them on everyone’s program is a waste. The coach is in the weight room with them and saw her doing them too.

Skinny people have skinny forearms so they need to work them out extra hard!

if you are being sarcastic

for the win

if not then
they should maybe worry about deadlifting 135 pounds at least before getting jacked forearms

I was the idiot at my school’s gym today. While taking the plates off after doing deadlifts I dropped one of them onto my foot which caused me to jump up suddenly hitting my head on a bar being used in the squat rack. I had a friend standing across from me saying that he had just wanted to see me hurt myself.

id rather see someone doing the wristcurls then someone squatting the bar plus 2.5 lb plates with the clamps on

The other night at LA Fitness, I had just finished doing reverse band bench in the power rack, and two young guys go into the rack. Around 20yo, one is fat, one is scrawny. The fat kid takes the empty bar out and starts curling it. Meanwhile, the scrawny kid stands to the side of the rack, facing the mirror, and throws down a front double bicep pose. 12" tops. Then he did some assisted curls with the empty bar with the fat kid helping. Then they both moved onto other exercises. I’ve seen a lot of dumb shit, but this was exceptionally dumb shit.

i squat the bar + 2.5kg with clamps on sometimes.

i have no plans to stop doing it just because someone else might prefer not to see it.

i think sometimes people really would do better to worry more about their own training and progress rather than judging other peoples.

Woah Woah good thing you clamp those 2.5 pounders on so they dont fly off mid rep and crush the skinny kid doing wrist curls in the squat rack next to you

The lady said 2.5 kgs. Keep it straight and don’t be a dick!

Today while I was doing my GVT leg session (about an hour) I had 6 different neighbors in the squat rack next to me. Only one actually squatted. At least he was doing a close stance oly type squat. He probably weighed less than me and only worked up to 105, but his form was decent. Meanwhile, at one point some basketball dudes wasted their time for a bit in the power rack 1/4 squatting 6 plates. So silly to observe.

If I clamped the weights to prevent them flying off and crushing people then that would indeed seem pretty stupid.

Why assume that people are stupid, though?

I clamp them because I explode up as much as possible and they don’t clunk as much / wiggle around on the bar as much with the clamps on. Also, the clamps weigh something (negligable as it might seem to you) and I psychologically profit from doing squats with precisely the set up I’m going to be using when I’m doing cleans or snatches since the only reason I squat is to help me stand up cleans and snatches.

But why the hell should I have to justify my training practices to you?

If you are curious about why someone is doing something you can always ask. If it is any of your business. You might just learn something.

I just don’t get why people are so quick to assume that they are so much smarter than others. Not just you, of course. Guess I’m just having trouble with this thread. Nothing that hasn’t been said before about it, I guess.

That is what I get for venturing away from training logs. Sigh.

I expressed admiration once at the ingenuity involved in the bench-curl superset when the partners switch for each set. I was curious about why a bench-row superset wouldn’t be preferred. Guess it is a bit hard to co-ordinate the bench-row bar trajectory unless one is particularly tall, though…

You live, you learn.

I saw these two weird skinny dicks walking around talking about how “cool” the treadmills in my gym are and shit like that. When I was leaving I asked the receptionist “Where’d those two skinny kids go?” and she leans in all serious and says “Those two SKINNY KIDS are on the 2012 olympic running team”.

I need to stop judging people so fast

Were they doing wrist curls to prepare for their events? If they were, I’ll judge the hell out of them lol.

I have seen it all when a genious kids at my gym take an extra bar to the squat rack to use to curl as opposed to removing the massive 45 lb plates and heaving the bar down from it’s mountainous perch. They then leave the extra bar in the rack.

My new gym time has me at the gym at peak hours. All kinds of stuff to see. Every manner of curls are being done. Men with massive arms pumping out standing curls, then preacher curls, isolation curls, and finishing up with drop sets on the hammer strength curl machine. Funny how I never see them wearing shorts.

There’s always the very, VERY slim chance that they had just read this:

The Real Show Muscle

What is the muscle group that is the most often visible on your body? The forearms! You might need a t-shirt two sizes too small to showcase your “gunz” or a tight-fit lycra one to make your chest visible to all. But you could wear a shirt 3 sizes too large and your forearms will still show.

As a result having thick and solid forearms is a sure fire way to look muscular in any social situation (not that it matters…).

Thick forearms, along with ear-scratching traps are part of the ultimate power look.[/quote]

#1 Ed Hardy wearing 40 year old doing tricep pushdowns on the Gravitron (assisted dip/pull up machine)
#2 Early 20 something doing deficit straight leg deads…135 on the bar, straps being used, back rounded like the sun.
#3 Two teens who experimented with prohormones the previous summer looking particularly frail and skinny today, doing every curl imaginable.
#4 Near the end of my workout, all the people described earlier meet up and start shooting the shit in the middle of the weight room, exchanging tips, talking about getting a pump on to go downtown, and flexing for one another. Then more of their bro’s showed up to join in on the fun.

Grip and forearm strength are critical in women’s track. Especially for the 5k runners.
