I would sell my soul for a ghr, if i hadn’t sold it for pizza and beer money in freshman year…
So what happened to your coach? If he knows his stuff he will fix you up. I sense that you don’t like what he is telling you and are looking elsewhere. We all do it and that is how we learn. It’s too late now to fix shit. you have to start thinking of what you are going to do for this meet. You need openers figured out and a plan. So get to work.
BB
yoke bar is great for zerchers, the thicker the better! 3" is nice! so many things you can train with that. good luck with the meet!!
Stardust, just relax, You will be fine. It’s like the gym baby. You are going to kick it.
I always worry about new lifters. I have this thing about coaching I am the best.
Just get ready.
I can’t give you anything cryptic unless I coach you sweetie. If you want to be successful, then you message me. I will make you succsessful for this meet. If you are serious, I will pick your numbers. YOU have been hearing too much bullshit.
BB
PS I don’t do this all the time, but you are freaking out. I understand.

You can have someone hold your ankles while on a mat… I’ve seen a guy use a bar with 45s on each side to hold his feet down and 5s to stop it from rolling forward. Works, but isn’t as good. Pull down machines can be used too. Again, not all as good but they work.
@BB She’s just nervous as it is her first meet, once she gets those out of the way she’ll probably find more PL type people at the meet to train with and get coaching from.

I’ve ghettoed one up in my garage gym. I put the bench in my rack. I wrap the pin on one side with carpet underlayment. Take the pin out of the other side. I kneel on the bench and hook my ankles under the wrapped pin. I got the idea from doing something similar on the lat pull down at a commercial gym. It’s a killer and works pretty well.

I’ve tried both, but i hover between 275 and 290 depending on the time of year, and both get a bit awkward. usually, I just tip up the back end of the 45 degree back raise at the York gym and put a rolled up yoga mat in the front. not perfect, but it gets the job done.

Yeah, I’ve also seen those half bosu balls used as the knee pad… I just made sure to join a gym with one. Fortis Fitness has one, where I am now (Reverse Hyper too)

I usually just set my feet under the squat rack (there’s a place at the bottom I can wedge under).
And yes, I am a bit nervous…I’m sure everyone kind of gets that on their first meet. I hope I can find some people in the area to train with, because sometimes it’s difficult just teaching everything to yourself.

If you weren’t nervous I think there’d be something wrong with you. I just did my 11th meet and I still get so nervous before I squat that I’m panting like a lap dog and my lips stick to my teeth. In my opinion, that’s part of it. We can all squat, bench and deadlift in the gym. It’s what you do on the platform that counts; what can you lift on command. I’ve had meets where I’ve pulled amazing lifts out my backside because of the adrenaline and I’ve had meets where I’ve missed easy lifts for the same reason.
Regardless, it’s an awesome feeling and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Doing it that way is definitley different - and significantly harder IMO.
Having had access to a GHR (bench? machine? I don’t know what to call it) for the last 8 months or so, I wouldn’t be too jealous. I don’t think GHRs are all that magical. A tool in the tool box, but there are lots of ways to train your hamstrings. I’d drop GHRs long before I gave up RDLs. Probably the best thing about it is that you can do a bunch of different stuff on it, like back raises, side raises (or whatever that is called), situps etc.

Ditto (although change 11 to 3 for me).
Good luck!

Haha, well I’m definitely excited for it. I’ve been practicing some lifts with mental commands (like pause bench) so that I could get used to it and not get so excited that I lift before they tell me to and such
I hope that this meet will be the kind where I pull something awesome because of the adrenaline.
I have no doubt it’ll be enjoyable. It’s all about the experience, and I don’t think many people forget their first meet!
i totally agree with the nerves! a certain amount of fear is a great motivator! log everything you do and if you by chance miss a lift, ask the judges why and also, they usually are very knowledgeable and can provide advice
I have high leg / torso ratio so I had a lot of problems with tipping in the bottom of the squat. The weight would get forward onto my toes, then I’d GM it up to finish.
I’ve only just (hopefully) fixed up my form yesterday. Part of the was making sure I was flexible enough to stay in the bottom position of the squat while having an upright torso. Doing goblet squats + forcing my knees out at the bottom (like Pendlay suggests), pigeon stretch, and stretching the hip flexors seemed to do the trick for me.
The form changes I made where to bring my hands in closer to increase the tension in my upper back. I also first break at the hips, just a bit, then sit down (instead of back) while shoving the knees out.
I only skimmed the thread, so I apologize if someone has suggested this before.
Stardust when is your meet(sorry if you already mentioned when)? Im heading into my first as well. Also without a coach or team. Havent gotten nervous yet but Ill probably be shaking at the meet. What weight class will you be in?
@Vorn - I had practiced with a broomstick for about half an hour last night, haha. Doing wall squats and such, like in the EliteFTS videos. Tomorrow is my DE squat day so I will get some videos and see if things have improved. I think I sometimes forget to shove my knees out like I need to. Also watching the “So You Think You Can Squat?” series helped!
@farmerson - my meet is on February 26th. I’ll be in the 132’s…when I was 110-114 lbs. months ago I thought I would compete in the 123’s…then I got over-excited with my “winter bulking” and sort of unintentionally went up into the 130s, haha.

More weight means bigger lifts.
