Squat Form for Tall Guys

Tall, 6’3

Shoulder with stance

Toes out

ATG

and had knee surgery.

Boo yah mother fuckers.

6’2" here and it is all form. I don’t like to have anyone squat too far below parallel because of the fulcrum effect the knee has, but that is not to say ATG does not belong in workouts. Stretch your hip flexors(psoas, iliacus and rectus femoris), hamstrings, and calves. Work hip mobility exercises, make sure your whole core is strong.

You can grow from partial sets, but you have to remember that you only strengthen 5 to 15 degrees around the joint angle in which you train. Don’t be afraid to lift light, machismo messes up too many people as far as true gains. Start light and get it right, ohterwise you are just shooting yourself in the foot.

Try RDLs, waiter’s bows, and box squats. Get used to the counterbalance and get that ass back. You want the bar over your feet, so have someone watch you from the side to let you know if you need to get your ass further back. Play with low and high bar positions. When in doubt try front and Zercher squats, you fuck up the form with one of those two the weight ends up on the floor or on the catch bars on the rack.

I’ve had knee surgery and have disc dessication inbetween L4/L5 and L5/S1 and I can go to parallel and beyond with no pain. Just work mobility, stay flexible and just work that squat until you can get it right.

Hey dude, this is a thread for tall people so get the fuck out.

Hey dude, at 6 FOOT 7 INCHES that makes me more qualified than you!

I don’t know who the fuck taught you math, but 6’7 IS NOT greater than 6’2.

Gee Wiz.

I’m glad it wasn’t you. Let’s measure up 6’7 and 6’2 and see which one IS greater…

6’2 = 74 inches / 6’7 = 79 inches

79 > 74 - School is now out of session.

Gee Wiz!

The OP wanted opinions from tall guys and I gave mine…Get a life!

You are a fucking moron.

I’m 5’9 and have a better squat than all you fuckers. Eat that ahahah :).

For real though, what waylander said…I’ve seen taller guys squat and their chest cave in/have trouble keeping upright.
A tall person can be great at squatting as well but it all depends on proportions in my opinion.
That’s why there are some people who are just naturally good squaters…and naturally good deadlifters.

I think if a tall guy even with not so good proportions should do a bit wider than shoulder width stance…go as low as THEY can go until they develop enough hip/hamstring/ankle mobility to be able to squat as low as they can go.
Even sitting in a below parallel position with JUST the bar will develop specific flexibility to squat right if you practice enough.
I don’t know about the whole stretching lower back muscles and degeneration of discs…never heard of that.

I bet he’s so confused right now.

6’3" and have absolutely no trouble squatting ATG as long as my toes are pointed out. I prefer a stance that’s at least shoulder width, if not wider.

lol!! I definitely thought he would pick up on my sarcasm, I guess not.

I’m 6 foot 4.

Shoulder width and toes pointed out works for me to get to parallel, and i dont go a2g on back squats,

Front squats however are to parallel except for the last set, which are a2g.

Make sure youre back isnt rounding out, and if you still dont go to parallel, get a small box to squat to.

Not confused. Couldn’t decide if it was true sarcasm or not so I decided to defend my tallness. HA! Jokes on me…Carry on. I shall duck my head as I leave the room.

Now this is the way to properly take a joke on the internet. I like you.

You should post more often, with your six foot eight foot twelve ass.

My god…if I was 6’7 and someone actually called me short, I’d be laughing whether he was serious or not.

I am 6’ even with rather long arms(6’6" arm span) and legs(33" inseam), squatting past parallel puts me so far over balanced that I will/have fallen backwards, my tail bone is about 2" behind my heels when ATG. The same goes for deads, the weights hit the ground before my legs hit 90* bent due to the long arms.

Not everyone was designed to be able to do everything, my max squat is in the 300’s due to balance but I do hack-squat-machine for reps(10x4) of 590lbs+sled(60lbs?) and can do split-leg press of 390lbs each leg.

Remember reading about this in an article a while back. Its not necessarily just being tall that makes squatting deep more difficult, but like someone already mentioned its the length of the femur in relation to the rest of your body. Someone coined it “disproportional segmentation” or something like that, its obvious if say two guys of the same height sit next to each other and ones head is higher than the other.

Ive noticed it training with friends, im 6 foot even and am pretty comfortable hitting ATG, but people of the same height with bambi legs just bail and good morning the shit out of it. If its a genuine structural issue like this rather than just hip flexor instabilities, cant really go wrong with sticking to heavy lunges or split squats
