Squat Form Check

ok, I’ve needed to get around to form check for a while, but I don’t have a consistent training partner. I had a training partner today. I didn’t realize how horrendous his phone camera was. Oh well. I hope you can still give advice with this crappy vid. This is my heaviest session back after a 5 week break because of a canoe trip. In the next 2 weeks, I’ll be using a lighter weight, so hopefully I can improve my form. Also: I hope to be able to update this with my (hopefully) improved squat form and also my bench and deadlift form.

It’s not bad at all. The only real technical issue that I see is your hips rising a little too fast, building up your quads should help with that as well as just concentrating on not letting that happen. When you hit the bottom of the squat, drive your back into the bar as well as pushing with your legs, if you only push with your legs then it doesn’t really engage your glutes fully.

Other than that, your walkout is a bit weird but half as bad as some of the form check videos I see. Slow things down a bit and don’t move so abruptly, let the weight settle on your back before you take a step back and don’t rush. With lighter weights it doesn’t seem to make much difference but once you get to 500+ then the walkout takes a lot more energy that should be going towards the squat.

You could also try keeping your elbows under the bar and see if that makes any difference, some people say it helps you to stay upright. I know Mark Rippetoe is into the elbows-back style, I wouldn’t necessarily say that one is better than the other but it’s worth trying the other way.

I’ve been doing pause front squats after my regular squats to work on that

I belive Blaine Sumner has a vid on that. I’ll check it out

I’ll give that a try.

Thanks for the help! I’ll try to update this with deadlift and bench.

Looks pretty good man! :+1:
