Reading the Spinal Tap doesn’t give any specific restrictions to assistance. I’ve run the first 4 weeks with the BBB variation 2 for assistance. Can anyone shed light on if that is fine? If there is guidance that I’m missing… then page number please?
Biggest concern is not following the program, and as such, I don’t want to throw something in that wasn’t intended for that program.
So far been hitting all my numbers without any issues…
Thanks
I personnaly use it for DL only, and just do ab roller 4 X 15-20 afterwards. I’m 35, so doing any more than 1 assistance lift would be too much for me. I think BBB with this (spinal tap) would be too much for most… but how are you feeling ? How much time you spent in the gym ? Sorry for asking questions instead of answering !!
Hey Phil,
I've been lifting for 2.5 years now... Spend about 1:15 in the gym every other day.
So far it feels awesome... steady gains without any walls. I'm really enjoying it, but wanted to run it as long as possible and was wondering if anyone had first hand experience with assistance work on Spinal Tap.
It just seems like this one can't be run as long as the others as you are adding weight so often, but I don't know as much as Jim... hence why I'm following his workout and not writing my own... I hope it keeps going as I love all the triples and jokers matched with the BBB assistance.
Very nice… for my self I’ve been using other program with bench and squats, but did not DL since last year or so (starting 5-3-1). That’s why I used spinal for this lift, cause I manage to do easily 15’s and 21’s at DL after some practice with 5-3-1 program… I though it would help me on getting better at DL and getting closer to my true max, ike I’m with other lifts, but my squat is still ramping up as much… guess it’s because I’m a stocky guy, so my squat will always be close to my DL PR’s…
Did spinal tap today with a 385 TM DL, but my DL max is 380 !! so it was exhausting… I’m thinking squat in 3 days, need rest for my back !!!
my squat PR is 365. I tried 385 DL for a 1x joker, but could’nt move it - after 365X3. I guess I’ll try some other template to get my DL max bigger. Good luck with your GAINS !
Spinal Tap routine reminds me a little bit of Sheiko volume. I personally would do nothing or maybe some very light weight/high reps to pump some blood into whatever you just worked. I personally utilize bands often after benching - front raises, face pulls, pull aparts, pushdowns, etc.
Forgot to mention : I use jumps of 5 lbs, not 10. Still, it’s 15 lbs in a 4 week cycle instead of 10, or 30 in a 6-7 week cycle instead of 20… ramping the weight by 10 lbs each week would have been too much for me.
Well just hit the 4th week and still feel good… Just hit two big PRs… Squatting 405 ( actually hit 410 ) and pulled 500 on deads yesterday. I know that’s not huge for a lot, but those were both walls for me before 5/3/1… Really appreciate you sharing your knowledge Jim.
Jim is it too much? As I originally said, I couldn’t find anywhere in the book saying yay or nay to accessories with Spinal Tap. I just wanna follow your guidance to keep smashing PRs…
Thx again to Jim for your work…
I recommend ab work and some lat work. That’s about it.
You have to earn the right to squat and leave - something everyone has to learn.
