Soreness in Advanced Lifters

Just wanted to check in with some of the veterans of the forum and fellow dudes who have been training 10+ years. How many of you guys are still getting crazy sore every single session or even relatively often?

Personally, I’m 27 years old and in my 15th year of lifting and I still get massively sore every session (excluding something like an easy deload). I am very diligent about peri workout nutrition/supplementation and hydration. It hasn’t negatively impacted my gym performance or gainz as I’m still progressing very well, but especially after leg days, I’m almost crippled with soreness.

I’m sure it’s probably just down to some genetic factors but I’m definitely curious to see feedback from others as to whether you do or don’t still achieve soreness from your sessions! Sound off!

I almost never get sore but after watching some RP vids about this, i decided to actually try getting sore and pumped no matter what, which means i will probably be doing at least 10 sets of supersets of 12-15 reps with very little rests, haha.

Older guy been doing this a long time and yep I am always sore. Legs definitely suffer the most for me in terms of doms or just soreness in general. I train fairly low volume and mostly for strength so don’t get the deep doms that someone doing hi volume does.

I still get really sore. Nutrition makes a difference, but it doesn’t make it go away.

I think it’s a sliding scale both directions. Maybe I’m better at lifting (repeated bout effect or whatever), but I also have more wear and tear, I’m older, and real life puts me in non-friendly situations (like flying frequently, but just insert a job here).

I’m also simply wussier with less tolerance for the soreness now. So what may not have been even noticeable for me when I was younger and tougher is a lot more annoying these days!

I rarely get sore. Anabolics are a beautiful thing lol. I only run low doses and it’s still incredible what they do for recovery.

Even before becoming chemically assisted, I never got crazy sore on a consistent basis. Probably genetics like you mention.

It appears that the lack of soreness has had no impact on your ability to make gains!

@Meathead56 thanks for contributing! You’ve definitely built a great physique without soreness, so it certainly doesn’t seem to be a requisite!

@simo74 @TrainForPain Very interesting to know you guys are still getting sore! I guess that means I’m probably just going to have to deal with it for years to come as well lol

@davemccright I’m a 50 yr old female who trains hard and has been lifting for nearly 30 yrs. I still get sore. I’m still pushing myself at the gym and am still growing and increasing my strength. In fact, the last couple of years I’ve been hitting it really hard and am amazed at my strength gains. I’m on TRT which has made a huge difference in my performance and recovery. Soreness levels are always minimal but I do feel DOMS about 2-3 days afterwards. I can’t remember the last time I wasn’t sore after a leg workouts.

I doesn’t hit me as severely as it did many years ago, but it still does very much depend on how much volume I’m getting through…tons of volume, with however much experience and other things to ease the DOMS will always lead to some degree of achiness IME.

I’m 59 and have been having huge post-workout soreness. I started BPC-157 a couple months ago and POOF! problem solved.

I’ve been training for 30+ years. I still get moderately sore after workouts if I have pushed hard and if I have been doing the exercise for several weeks. If I rotate in an exercise I haven’t been doing for a while, I get much more sore. And if it is a leg exercise, the soreness the next day is significant.

Age 59. Lifting since age 20. Soreness is more now than when I was younger. Plus leg days muscle soreness even causes joint soreness sometimes. Still maintaining size overall from decades of heavy and intense lifting. Changed routines periodically over years and less of the heavy weights and low reps now. More volume less rest between sets doctrine now. Soreness is acutely there on high 100 reps days. Age, wisdom of muscle mind connection has really localized pain in specific muscle groups on given assigned days as well. Let’s me know I am still in the fight and loving the process.
