Sony has Lost Over $3 Billion on the PS3

I gotta say besides God of War or Metal Gear there really isnt any sony owned title that can convince alot of people to pic up a console until it drops to maybe $299.00

I gotta say 3 billion dollars is a lot to pay for hubris.

"Think you paid too much for your Playstation 3? Don’t expect any sympathy from Sony.

In the company’s fiscal 2008 annual report, Sony revealed that they’ve now lost roughly $3.3 billion (that’s billion with a B) on the Playstation 3 since its launch. That breaks down to $2.16 billion in 2007, followed by a notably smaller but equally daunting $1.16 billion loss in 2008.

The reason? Pricing the console below its production cost. That’s right - that hefty $599 you paid for the PS3 back when it first launched was significantly cheaper than the cost of producing it in the first place, and while the retail price has come down some, the losses keep piling up.

Investors have reason to sweat. In a statement, Sony claimed “the large-scale investment required during the development and introductory period of a new gaming platform may not be fully recovered.” They went on to note that they’ve invested a great deal of money into R&D for the console, a sum they might not be able to recoup if the PS3 “fails to achieve such favorable market penetration.”

Sony fanboys should take heart, however. Losing money on hardware is relatively common in the video game biz, as companies routinely lower prices to sell more units and thus stimulate software sales.

Sony’s game division saw a 26% sales spike last quarter, a trend they expect will continue on the strength of strong exclusives like the recently released Metal Gear Solid 4 and the upcoming sequel Resistance 2.

But will it be enough?"

Interesting…but only time will tell. In the meantime I’ll enjoy my PS3 and the fact that we have the game technology we have…and FREE Playstation Network because I don’t think it will be free for long. Also I can only imagine the sales spike Sony will get when GOW3 drops.

Yeah, there are quite a few games coming out for PS3 that I’m really interested in. I still haven’t checked out MGS4, but I hear it’s great.

I’ve mainly been using my PS3 as a Blu-Ray player.

I don’t plan to buy a new gen console anytime soon. It’s basically the same shit as the last gen with better graphics…what’s the point!?

I’m saddened by the whole gaming industry. I remember the “Golden Age” of video games back in the 90s. Oh well, that’s long gone now…

What bothers me even more is when companies like Looking Glass make amazing games like System Shock 2 and they go out of business…wtf!? It’s frustrated, because people seem to like playing the same old crap over and over and over again (i.e. GTA 4). Rather than play something creative and original.

Everything went down hill when EA started buying up everyone. That was the beginning of the end.

Should be interesting what happens when gt5 drops, i was thinking about getting a ps3 however i dont think i’d use it, blu ray doesnt really excite me…and i’d only be wanting to play gta 4 which i’ve heard isnt that special

I just want some motherfucking Socom already.

Blech… I’m no fan-boy, but I, along with all non Sony fanboys, knew that this was going to happen. Too much technology for too of a price - not enough interest.

Now, when God of War III, Final Fantasy VII remake or Kingdom Hearts III comes out, Sony will be receiving my business.

You should check out Bioshock, it’s to a lesser extent a sequel to System Shock.

Metal Gear 4 sucks, according to this guy: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/99-Metal-Gear-Solid-4

I guess I’ll be holding my manhood cheap because I wasn’t playing my PS3 on this St. Crispin’s day. When is that, anyway?

The best thing about the PS3 is its GPU.

More content…more integration with ALL entertainment elements…and the list goes on. And HD quality graphics by itself makes a hell of a gaming experience…as millions will agree.

And the difference between MGS…and MGS4 speaks as to why there’s a point.

Why wait for it on PS3 when you can have it now on 360?

Yeah MGS had a way better story line, IMO. Cut scenes that didn’t take 25 minutes, and one of the best death scenes ever (Sniper Wolf).

I actually have to reserve judgement because I haven’t played it yet but after Snake Eater, i kind of lost faith.

So they’re trying to dish some backwards ass logic that those of us that aren’t buying it are actually helping them not lose money? I hate it companies do that shit.

I’d recommend getting a remote if you’re going to use the PS3 a lot for DVD/Blu-Ray. Using the controller can get to be a pain in ass after a while.

Also, what’s nice about the PS3’s Blu-Ray capability is that with the latest PS3 patches, it was automatically upgraded to the Blu-Ray 2.0 spec.

Once Tekken 6 hits, if it doesn’t come to the 360, I’m going to have to buy, regardless of cost.

I thought the whole reason and profit idea behind video games these days was the games themselves.

Similar to the whole idea with the shaving razor they sent you for free when you turned 18. Cool, right? But how much do those stinking blade cartridges cost? And you can only purchase their brand of cartridges.

Why get it on 360 when you can get it on PC and have it look better than 360 or PS3? and its only $20 on pc.

It’s because PS3 sucks…2 months after the PS3’s release the PS2 was outselling it, as was the nintendo DS. it’s overpriced shit.
