Song Covers

I don’t know if it’s technically a cover if the original band is involved, but I recall the Aerosmith/Run DMC version of “Walk This Way” very fondly from junior high:

I remember when that came out!!! That was like the one song everyone at school was talking about.

I love that song

Clapton is the first (and only?) 3-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame:
Cream
Derek and the Dominoes
Solo

Some of my favorite covers…

Can’t Find My Way Home - Blind Faith (Steve Winwood), covered by House of Lords

Great White’s album “Great Zeppelin”

Various Artists - Thunderstruck AC/DC Tribute

Various Artists - Dragon Attack Queen Tribute

an AC/DC tribute!!! man… I love them. Angus is a God

I think I will actually spend money on that one and the Queen Tribute.

I loved the television special on the Eagles and Metallica

That is awesome!

I’m surprised nobody’s mentioned Tool’s Cover of “No Quarter” by Led Zeppelin.

Tool - No Quarter

Goofy picture, and the very tail end of the song is cut off. But who’s counting?

okay well I don’t mind and even like some Country music but this seems off a little

Shania Twain - “You Shook me All Night Long” original by AC/DC

The AC/DC tribute is pretty chunky…
and I jacked up the title, it’s Thunderbolt.

Song/artist list:

  1. Highway To Hell - Kevin Dubrow (Vocal), Carlos Cavazo (Guitar), Rudy Sarzo (Bass), Frankie Banali (Drums) - I like this one, but I am a QR guy. RIP Kevin DuBrow.

  2. Little Lover - Sebastian Bach (Vocal), Warren DeMartini (Guitar), Billy Sherwood (Bass), Bobby Blotzer (Drums) - Pretty cool, one of my all time favorite AC/DC songs.

  3. Back In Black - Joe Lynn Turner (Vocal), Phil Collen (Guitar), Jeff Pilson (Bass), Simon Wright (Drums) - Solid

  4. Live Wire - Whitfield Crane (Vocal), Klaus Eichstadt (Guitar), Brad Divens (Bass), Shannon Larkin (Drums), Mike Combs (Rhythm Guitar) - Really like this one.

  5. Sin City - Jack Russel (Vocal), Mark Kendall (Guitar), Sean McNabb (Bass), Bobby Blotzer (Drums), Bruce Gowdy (Rhythm Guitar) - One of my favorite AC/CD songs, by one of my favorite singers

  6. Ride On - Whitfield Crane (Vocal), Klaus Eichstadt (Guitar), Brad Divens (Bass), Shannon Larkin (Drums), Mike Combs (Rhythm Guitar) - Another good one by Whitfield Crane

  7. Shake A Leg - John Corabi (Vocal), Bob Kulick (Guitar), Billy Sheehan (Bass), Pat Torpey (Drums) - not a big fan here… never really got John Corabi.

  8. Hell Ain’t A Bad Place To Be -Zakk Wylde (Lead Guitar & Vocal), Rudy Sarzo (Bass), Simon Wright (Drums), James Morley (Rhythm
Guitar) - Love it… but I like most of what Zakk does.

  9. Whole Lotta Rosie - Stephen Pearcy (Vocal), Tracii Guns (Guitar), John Alderete (Bass), Jay Shellen (Drums), Bruce Gowdy (Rhythm Guitar) - Pretty good.

  10. Night Prowler - Dave Meniketti (Vocal & Guitar), Tony Franklin (Bass), Simon Wright (Drums), James Morley (Rhythm Guitar) - OK

  11. It’s A Long Way To The Top - Lemmy Kilmister (Vocal, Bass & Rhythm Guitar), Jake E Lee (Guitar), Ricky Philips (Bass), Simon Wright (Drums), James Morley (Rhythm
Guitar) - Not a Lemmy guy, but this is OK.

  12. Walk All Over You - Dee Snider (Vocal), Scott Ian (Guitar), Frank Bello (Bass), Charlie Benante (Drums) - Like this one a lot too. Dee Snider has an underrated voice IMO.

  13. T.N.T. - Sebastian Bach (Vocal), Kelly Deal (Guitar & Drums), Jimmy Flemion (Bass) - Another good one.

The Queen CD has a lot of the same artists, and it’s really cool all the way through except for We Will Rock You/We are the Champions by Paul Shortino. I like Paul’s work, have seen him live, but I think he murdered this one.

Didn’t see it mentioned, but Metallica’s cover of Queen’s “Stone Cold Crazy” pretty much overshadowed the original.

Sweet Jane - Cowboy Junkies (original Velvet Underground) …

I love Velvet Underground, and think this was a good cover.

A little more rockin’ Jane, by Ian McCulloch:

Ha! I like Echo and The Bunnymen…never knew about this cover. Nice find.

I tried to find the cover of Alanis doing “lovely lady lumps” which… I hate tht song… but I heard it was funny

whoa, whoa, whoa…i believe you mean “puff daddy”. and i liked that song. r.i.p. biggie

Don’t know if they have been posted already, but I think these are some of the funniest (that is if you like big band swing):

Paula Anka

  • Eye of the Tiger: that’s a bit of a novelty number)
    Paul Anka Eyes - YouTube

  • Jump (van Halen): this one works really well and has some Glen Millerish tones
    - YouTube

oh man… the eye of the TIGER!

and I like that song… yes I actually have it on my mp3 player.

One of the first huge ones that helped really put Hendrix on the map,
All Along The Watchtower by Bob Dylan, the U2 version on Rattle and Hum kicks ass too.

Not a big country fan either, but these guys are pretty funny.

Hayseed Dixie does Highway to hell.

Many of my favorite bands play lots of covers. Here are a few favorite covers which are very different from the originals:

Fairport Convention “Matty Groves” "Matty Groves" - Fairport Convention Cropredy 2007 (w/Lego) - YouTube Traditional murder ballad, plus the story of the song is projected on the screen behind the band as acted out by Lego men.

Tiny Tim “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?” Do Ya Think I'm Sexy? - Tiny Tim - YouTube Rod Stewart’s hit played 1920s style, though Tiny Tim’s also done it as disco.

Asleep At The Wheel “Route 66” - YouTube This song’s been done in dozens of different ways, here it is Western swing style.

Del McCoury “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” 1952 Vincent Black Lightning - YouTube Originally by Richard Thompson (one-time Fairport Convention member, btw). A very British song about a young thug turned into bluegrass by a clean-cut old American, but it somehow works.

Slap Happy Humphrey “G-senjo ni hitori” - YouTube Morita Doji song covered almost a note for note cover with the addition of noise guitar, too bad it’s not much of a video (to say the least). But one of my favorite bands of all time.

I also do this kind of thing myself, specifically ridiculous metal covers of country, folk and jazz.

Kevin DuBrow is dead ?!?!

Patsy Cline’s cover of “Crazy”

and my favorite of all time

Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme cover “Black Hole Sun”

Classic!

Surely Santana’s version of Black Magic Woman could top your list.

I’m not a record book. I’m going to miss a few.

Who did she cover with this?

I burned this on a CD earlier this week and it rotated through the player this morning while rolling to work. I had to crank it up loud as I love this song. T-Rex did it originally and I like his version, but IMO The Power Station with Robert Palmer (RIP) owns it now. Bang A Gong Get It On!
