Song Covers

I like when a band takes a song and kills it, really makes it sound like their own.

Alien Ant Farm redoing “Smooth Criminal” is one of my favorites.

I’d be interested in seeing what covers other people like.

I also like Orgy’s cover of “Blue Monday”

and of course, Marilyn Manson’s cover of “Sweet Dreams are Made of This”

Johnny Cash singing “Hurt” original by Trent Reznor

Metallica singing “Turn the Page” originally sung by Bob Seger. I like the song and I like both versions

There’s a lot of bad covers out there.

Off of the top of my head, some of the better ones are:

One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer - George Thorogood

Last Kiss - Pearl Jam

I will survive - Cake

The man who sold the world - Nirvana

Lake of Fire - Nirvana

Layla - Eric Clapton

Pretty woman- Van Halen

I actually like “I will survive” by Cake! But then I really like Cake they just sound so odd.

I love that song. Fashion Nugget was a great album, but none of their other work has even come close to it.

There are some horrible examples of covers, one that leaps to mind is Limp Bizkit doing The Who’s behind blue eyes, it just feels wrong, and worse there are people that actually think they penned the original…

But then I have to change my tune when two of my favorite writers and musicians are covered, to excellent results…such as…

Hallelujah- Jeff Buckley (original Leonard Cohen)

Dark Globe- REM (original Syd Barret) not the Placebo version I don’t care for it

Ultimately though, Jeff Buckley and REM stand on their own merits as artists by far and thats probably why they pulled off the covers so well. I might be a bit hard pressed but I’ll try and think of a few more examples.

I think Placebo also did that Kate Bush song… what is that annoying song she sings?

I like when they did the Eagle tribute and a bunch of folks covered their songs.

I’m confused, who do you think did the original of this or are you saying someone covered it well?

My thoughts

Stevie Ray Vaughan-Voodoo Chile(Slight Return)
or
SRV-Little Wing

Who else can cover Hendrix songs and totally kick ass like that?

Edit…didn’t see you listed it above

Johnny has covered many people, but by that same token many have covered him.

I like their Whiskey in the Jar cover a lot–but i’m also a huge metallica fan.

Disturbed doing “Shout”

The Ataris doing “Boys of Summer”

I also like this version of “Boys of Summer” as done by DJ Sammy

Not a huge fan of chick techno music normally, but I like the tune enough to go with it.

Sort of a cover…but it’s the composer playing it.
Tango en Skai - Roland Dyens

To keep with the classical theme:

Jason Vieaux “covering” the First Movement of El Decameron Negro by Leo Brouwer. (the performer is really good)

Pepe Romero playing “Asturias (leyenda)” by Isaac Albeniz

Pepe again playing “Recuerdos de la Alhambra” by Fransisco Tarrega.
The technique is called tremolo, and Pepe is probably one of, if not the, best players of it.

EDIT:
You can watch me playing a few tunes very badly as well!
Tarrega and Bach - YouTube about two years ago now. Theoretically I’m better at guitar now…

If you like the classical guitar stuff, there’s a hyoge group of it on youtube.

The better vids are the last ones in pages of the group–mostly pros back there. lots of amateurs (like me) otherwise.

Layla was originally by Derrick and the Dominos. I knew it was a cover but I had to look it up.
SRV does a great job with Hendrix songs, totally agree.

Here’s some more bad covers from aceshowbiz.com. I haven’t heard all of them, but I imagine they suck, because some of the originals are pretty bad:

“Every Breath You Take” - P. Diddy. Originally performed by The Police
“Stairway To Heaven” - Dolly Parton. Originally performed by Led Zeppelin
(I’ve heard this, it’s just wrong on so many levels)
“Ring of Fire” - Olivia Newton-John. Originally performed by Johnny Cash
(WTF??)
“American Pie” - Madonna. Originally performed by Don McLean
db

oh Hey dianab just reminded me of one on my mp3 player

“jolene” sung by Strawberry Switchblade, original by Dolly Parton

Local H doing “Toxic”

Eric Clapton was the lead guitar player and singer of Derek and the Dominoes
