Layla was originally by Derrick and the Dominos.

Eric Clapton was the lead guitar player and singer of Derek and the Dominoes :)
no!!! really? I did not know that. That is a bar trivia question that will win you some money. Very cool.

oh Hey dianab just reminded me of one on my mp3 player

“jolene” sung by Strawberry Switchblade, original by Dolly Parton
Which reminds me…Jolene was also covered by The White Stripes. It’s an odd coupling, but it’s actually good.

wrong covers are Celine Dion singing AC/DC and Britney Spears singing “I Love Rock and Roll”

Also the fact that I think Britney Spears said ‘I did it because I just love Pat Benatar’. I think they passed it off as a joking, but I doubt she knew it was Joan Jett, I’ve actually encountered a few people who made the same mistake.

Another wrong cover to me,

Comfortably numb done by the Scissor Sisters.

I like this cover of Stairway to Heaven by Gregorian:

Dream Theater covers a ton of Pink Floyd material, and as much as I think they are an astounding band…and would love to see them live, it’s just not for me.

I have the Chant CD

very cool

I like their Whiskey in the Jar cover a lot–but i’m also a huge metallica fan.

Great one.

A few other random good ones:

The Cure, Hello I Love You: Featured Content on Myspace

Save Ferris, I Want You to Want Me: Featured Content on Myspace

U2, Dancing Barefoot: http://www.mp3-center.org/download_mp3/U2/Dancing%20Barefoot/9595769

Lemonheads, Mrs. Robinson: Mrs. Robinson — The Lemonheads | Last.fm

Somebody mentioned Puff Daddy, I’m not a fan either way and the covers are blah to me…both Every breath you take by the Police and Kashmir by Zeppelin…even though I know he had their support and participation in one case. I just think they are FTL.

Sweet Jane - Cowboy Junkies (original Velvet Underground) …

I love Velvet Underground, and think this was a good cover.

Mad World - Gary Jules (original Tears For Fears)

Tears for Fears are great, but I think Gary Jules gave this song more of a melancholic atmosphere.

I don’t know if anybody has heard of Bonnie Prince Billy, I adore him, but he won’t be everybody’s cup of tea. By far. He remade a Bill Withers song…

The Same Love That Made Me Laugh - Bonnie Prince Billy (original Bill Withers)

Its gut wrenchingly…bad to some…good to me.

Edits in…umm…I seem to be going crazy in your great thread October Girl …I’ll stop…for now Lol

Heres some Hard Rock/Metal Ones which are pretty good…

Killswitch Engage - Holy Diver (Cover or Dio’s song Holy Diver)

Dope - You Spin Me Round (Cover of dead or alives you spin me round)

Soil - Black Betty (Cover of Spiderbait)

Cant think of anymore right now…

that killswitch covers great, videos even sillier than dio’s

Me neither, obviously, so does it still count?

I never bash covers, because I feel they all somehow bring something new. But that one is a weak as they get. More than half of Sweet Jane’s soul and body comes from the stunning intro which the Cowboy Junkies skipped altogether. And that’s from somebody who enjoys a lot of their work.

My favorite cover of all times has got to be Lindsey Buckingham’s acoustic rendition of “Go Insane”. And yes I know, technically it ain’t a cover. Still is a complete departure from the original, plus the guitar work is spectacular.

I forgot about the Lemonheads! I have that one on my mp3 too.

I hadn’t heard the Cure’s take on I Want You to Want me. I liked it. But then I am a Cure fan.

I think I am a fan of covers for the same reason. The new spin on it can also bring a wider audience of appreciation.

Like the Dope cover

Huh. Well that’s fair enough…its funny though since I’m not a huge fan of the Cowboy Junkies yet I am of The Velvet Underground, you’d think I wouldn’t be impressed. You’re right about the intro, but I love the way she sings the end versus especially…I love the sound of it, the pitch of it…I’ve sang it myself and definitely felt the soul in it.

Lindsay Buckingham is great. Not one of my personal favorites, but nonetheless…

Jealous Guy- Elliott Smith (Original John Lennon)

I pretty much like everything Elliott Smith does…or…did :o(

And speaking of John Lennon…this footage of him doing Dear Yoko is so personal and amazing…its like he made it yesterday, almost.
