Sodium Intake

What are the health problems and what are the body comp. problems with too much sodium and what is a good guideline? I pretty much eat nothing processed, so I know mostly my sodium is okay, but sometimes I really want chicken soup and I realized that one can has 100% of my DV of sodium…is this problematic?

Have some potassium too?

Huge variation between people. If i cut my salt intake to near zero, I get a 20mmHg drop in my systolic blood pressure. For other people it doesn’t make a difference.

I don’t know about sodium and other health stuff though. Just my experience with hypertension.

If you are used to eating a lot of salt on a consistent basis it won’t matter. Since you would be eating more salt than your typically do you will experience a large increase in water retention, thus blood pressure and looking soft, until your body gets back to normal.

I really don’t think it affects macronutrient metabolism. It will affect performance if you drop salt intake significantly lower than you are used to, or if you intake a different balance of salts that you aren’t used to. As posted above, if you intake extra sodium you should probably intake extra potassium, at least if you plan on doing it on a regular basis.

If you’re just going to have a can of soup here or there don’t worry about it. Just realize you’ll probably weight an extra pound or two the next day or two while the salt it in your system.
