Soda, Tea, and Hydration

Do diet coke and caffinated tea dehydrate you? Should I drink extra water if I am going to drink these beverages? What about non-caffinated soda like diet sprite?

Thanks!

If you have one or two no its no big deal yes though any caff. is a diuretic but you have to remember your taking that caff. in this case with a liquid thats counts as well.

sure if you have a coke have an extra glass of water wont hurt and may help but I wouldnt sweat it if your all ready getting plenty to drink like we all should

If I remember the study correctly, caffeine has diuretic effects at and above 300mg/day.

Therefore 300mg of pure caffeine as in pills will induce a net water/sodium loss.

However, considering most people drink caffeine in beverages that usually containe less than 300mg/day, caffeinated beverages still count towards positive hydration and even then, caffeine is a very weak diuretic.

This is something you can try for yourself. When I switched from coffee to caffein pills, my urine output drop significantly, but then again, I wasn’t drinking the 5-6 cups of liquid a day anymore.

Tea is similar, if you take dried tea leaves (or tea extracts) with a sip of water, you will notice the same thing.

Same for carbonated beverages.

Anyway, hope that helps.
