I’m just glad that in the entire history of soccer, somebody decided to pick up the ball and run with it. We can all be thankful for that.
Women, short shorts, chasing balls, amen to that.

Fun to watch.
Fun to play.

Sounds like someone has “penis envy”…
I feel the same way about both soccer and baseball. I like playing them, but hate watching them. I appreciate what they can do and the amount of work it takes to get to a pro level, but they are just too boring to watch.

I was born and grew up where soccer is king. It is the lifestyle most young boys are inaugurated into. When I came here to the US, I owned everyone I competed against. Not because I was very good, but because the competition was so much more inferior to what I experienced in Italy. Because of it, my leg development began early and now enjoy my wheels because of it. I love World Cup Soccer because you pan countries against countries, and its a test of teamwork, endurance, and strategy. It taught me so much in life that is applicable, that I could never hate it. Remember that sports are considered only a game, but have much more to offer than that.
Good post. I’m not much of a soccer fan, but I really enjoyed watching the World Cup 06 and Euro 08 for the reasons you stated. It didn’t hurt that during some of June’s Euro tournament I was stuck in a hotel right across the street from a British pub.

I play soccer and have for many years. and yes watching soccer is kind of boring. HOWEVER!!! I am able to appreciate the skill that the players have. Any moves that they do that seem oh so simple are usually not that simple.
Even to be able to sprint down the field with the ball at your feet, looking up to see where your space is…is admireable.

This post is worthless without pictures.
I’ll add that I am not a big soccer fan myself but going to a soccer game is a total different experience. I once went to go see a game in Monterrey and the crowd was just out of control.
People throwing down a bunch of little torn papers, rolling out the huge team flag over the bleachers was a great experience I saw at that game.

I live in a country where it only became a “big deal” about 5 years ago, because Japan’s soccer team had a decent shot at a medal in the Olympics (not really, but don’t try telling any of them that). And since then it has become this national obsession over here (as long as it involves Japanese winning, of course).
I have heard the arguments in favor of why soccer is so great, but I just cannot, cannot, buy them. No matter how hard I try. I cannot stand to watch a sport in which I have to go, OOOOHHH, OOOHH…AAAWWWWWWwwwww… around sixty times in a game with a final score of 1-1. Or 0-0, for God’s sake.
If I am going to invest myself that emotionally into a sport, I will do so with basketball, whose scores are usually over 100 points a side, and which offer hundreds of chances at instant gratifications; or football, whose incredibly complex plays and feats of physical prowess will keep me glued to the screen for hours.
Soccer sucks a fart out of my asshole.
you go suck a fart out of your own asshole, soccer is the shit

Quoted for truth.
Now that I’ve regained my composure, team sports on all levels are of no interest to me. They never have been.
It is soccer in general that you don’t like or soccer in Japan?

YES! Unfortunatly I grew up in Atlanta, not alot of ice, so I never got to play. Go Thrashers!
I’m from Toronto…the self-proclaimed mecca of the hockey world. Plenty of ice here…but I’d rather play ball hockey since I can’t skate for shit.
Um…MONTREAL > TORONTO.
Suck it maple leafs we have like +20 Stanley cups.
I love playing and watching soccer/football. I love the fluidity of it. Anybody can become involved at any time. There’s speed, skill, agility, and intensity (at least the stuff I watch and play in).
I’ll admit that there’s a lot of boring football out there thanks to people playing too conservatively. When teams are playing to score and the games are open, soccer is amazing.
