So Mr. X Goes To The Gym

OK, so I’ve been a little lax at posting my *** (wouldn’t want to get moved, ya know… LOL!

4/30/08

Today I felt great! I had plenty of energy and I felt strong.
So I cranked up Dropkick Murphy’s and Motley Crue (now there’s a combo… old school American rock and new school Irish rock!)

Here’s my somewhat normal EDT set…
A1
Weighted Dips @ 45#
A2
Close Grip Low Row @ 130#
5X11 (55 reps)
3X1 (3 reps)
Total of 58 reps each.
The weighted dips were consistent all the way through, 45# was a good weight to use. The close grip low rows were a joke… they were so easy it wasn’t even funny. I was on one of my last sets and for some reason I got sidetracked, and found myself repeating my set… I did at least 10 reps and it felt like 2.

Now for the crazy EDT set… DB Snatches…
B1
DB Snatch (R) @ 30#
B2
DB Snatch (L) @ 30#
5 reps X 20 sets = 100 reps per side PR (by a LOT!).
I was in a freakin’ zone… you know the feeling, you’re just focused and the only rest you take is writing the numbers down or grabbing some liquid to throw down the gullet! It was SA-WEET!
And I had this good of a day even with my knee feeling like it was filled with ground glass. (Not a feeling you want, trust me… %-P )

So crank up the i-Tunes, grab something to lift, or flip, or throw (Highland games) and just have FUN!

(And no, I haven’t been using magic mushrooms in my omelette’s… LOL!)

I had a case of the Fridays today…
Wanted to go to the gym, happy to be at the gym, realized I left my w/o logs at home, visited with an old friend (she’s not old, we’ve just known her for years), finally got around to working out. And in spite of everything, I think I had a decent work out…

A1
Chins @ BW
A2
Standing Mil Press @ 75#
10 sets X 5 reps
Total of 50 reps each (I was thinking my chins were basically sucking, and then it dawned on me, I was doing 50 of those bad boys in 15 minutes… OK, maybe not so sucky! LOL!)

B1
BW Push-ups
B2
BW Body Rows (OK, I’m not sure what these are really called. I was at the Smith machine and had the bar near the floor, I laid along the floor and hung from the bar and did pull ups so my chest touched the bar.)
15X5
Total of 75 reps each.
I was surprised, I worked up quite the sweat on these!

So I’ll see how it goes tomorrow, I’ve got yoga and then I’ll just see what floats my boat. And yes, I am limited on what I can do at yoga, the bent leg moves are quite painful, so I modify them to where they don’t hurt quite as much. And speaking of the knee, surgery next Friday… don’t know what time yet, or even whether it will be in the morning or afternoon. Looking forward to not feeling like I’ve got chunks of gravel in the joint. And I’m really looking forward to working out the lower body again… the wife informed me that my lower half is behind the upper half and I need to get it built up. I agree!
Well Rock Hard, Lift Heavy

Sweet training! Good luck with the knee surgery…

Praying for you on the operation. You’ll be hittin the lower half in no time.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the thoughts and prayers… I figure it gonna go just fine and your right, I will be hitting lower body real soon!

So today…
Yoga was fun today… it was so muggy in the room that it just sucked the energy right out of you. So we just did our moves nice and slow, which was almost harder than doing them at our regular pace.

And then for my workout, I just kind of messed around, nothing structured, tried some heavy loads to see how they felt.

RDL
10@135#
5@225#
5@225#
2@315# (this felt heavy… go figure)

Rack Lockouts
10@135#
2@225# (these were really heavy… but the wife watched me do it, so I can count them… LOL!)
8@185#
4@185#

DB Preacher curls
10(R)x35#x3sets
10(L)x35#x3sets

Straight Arm cable Press-downs
10x80#x3sets

No structure but it was fun. Oh, and then I had a dump run to make so I loaded the truck and emptied it out, so that counts for something.
Keep on Rockin’.

Star-date Five-Five-Twenty-Oh-Eight
Captain’s Log…
I’m tired, so… very… tired…

Oh, sorry, guess I’ve watching too many Star Trek movies lately… LOL!
Actually I am tired though. I had to go into work Saturday night at midnight, and didn’t get home until around 7 Sunday evening. I put in an 18 hour day at work, but hadn’t really slept since Friday night… So that’s up for 38 hours with a couple hours nap… I think I’m getting too old for that kind of schedule.

OK, so today’s w/o,
A1
Bench Press @ 150# (added 5#)
A2
T-Bar Row @ 85#
Warm-up
barX20
95#X15 (bench)
EDT SETS
13 sets X 5 reps
Total of 65 reps each (I liked that I raised my weight on the bench and still got the same number of reps as last week!)

B1
Seated OVHD DB Press @ 35# (x2)
B2
BB Curl @ 70#
13 sets X 5 reps
Total of 65 reps each

Now Charles wanted me to log any pain (or lack of) I may have experienced and I have to say, there wasn’t really any to speak of… when doing the bench press I had ‘pressure’ in the joints, but not ‘pain’ per say. Well, except when doing the OVHD presses, there was a little more discomfort in both shoulders, but again, it was more of a fatigue. The same for curls, discomfort in the elbows, but not so much it slowed me down or caused me to want to stop… on a scale of 1 - 10 with 10 being “give me some morphine”, it is a 1. But my 1 could be a 5 for someone else… I always have some pain some where, I have arthritis in my back… thoracic and lower lumbar.

Speaking of ‘pain’, I went and had my pre-surgery meeting today, and I’m now banned from my supplements and any aspirin/Advil/vicodin… OK, so no vicodin, LOL! Surgery on Friday, so 4 days and counting.

Keep on Rockin’!!!

By what rationale are you being banned from your supplements? They’re just a variety of food, aren’t they?

The reasoning, I believe, is some of them can increase blood pressure (such as arginine), and fish oils have a blood thinning property, and the rest are just, because…
I think since I’m being ‘knocked out’, they don’t want me to be taking anything that could cause issues with anesthesia, and they don’t want any bleeding issues either, so any and all vitamins, painkillers, & sups are banned for at least 1 week before.

I’ve never heard of that before. Better safe than sorry though. Best of luck to you on the operation!

Crap, this has been a brutal week… I got my workout in on Monday, Tuesday I had to be at work by 6:00am, then I had to go back in to work at 10:30 PM. Worked a double shift, 16 hours and basically no sleep again in 42 hours. So by the time I got home I was just too tired to go to the gym. Then today was another major pain at work, and my knee has not been one little bit pleased with me all week! The wife called me to let me know I’m the first one on the schedule for surgery tomorrow, so I will be there just before 7:00am.

So I’ll let you all know how I’m feeling, sometime tomorrow.
I’ll probably come home and nap off the effects, and Momma to just go to the gym and have a great workout. LOL!
Later…

(edit) Watching the weather, and it looks like it’s supposed to get up to almost 90* by next weekend! WooHoo! Think I’ll hook up the 5th-wheel and take Diana out for a couple nights!

As hel said, we’ll be praying for you – hope it all goes smoothly. Looking forward to a quick rebound.

Thanks all!
Surgery went well, cleaned up everything on the tear side, but on the ‘outside’ side, I had arthritis and fraying of the cartilage, so he cleaned that up as well. Unfortunately, the cartilage is weak and the knee is not as healthy as he would like, so they suggested I begin a regiment of Glucosamine/chondroitin/msm and fish oil and vitamin C… Huh, go figure! LOL!

I was informed I couldn’t go run the lake (4 mile loop) yet, and no squats/leg presses for a couple more weeks (basically, don’t do anything that could increase interstitial pressure). I’m not even allowed to do the elliptical yet! :frowning:
It was pure torture though, walking in there… everybody was drinking coffee!!! And as you walked in the front door, the smell of fresh brewed coffee was overwhelming! So in recovery after I woke up they brought me a cup of wonderful coffee, as soon as I was able to sit up enough to hold and drink it… I couldn’t even see straight yet, but I had my coffee!!!

So like I said, I’m gonna kick back and watch some movies, and the wife is going to go to the gym, shop for some shoes (they are ‘cute’) and pick up my pain meds, and we’re just going to relax today.

Thanks for all the well wishes and I will catch you all later.
X

Allright, sounds like a success. Kick back and enjoy the down time.

Here’s to a quick recovery Mr. X!

If you were thinking about coffee, it must have been fine. Glad to hear it all worked out ok.

Now get back to work (:-))

found this picture and just had to post it! LOL!

Feel great today! Itches a little bit, but no pain. Gonna take it a little easy, wife took next week off, so we’re going camping (31ft 5th-wheel, not a tent!). Weather is supposed to be great, finally!

Should be able to jump back in, in a couple of weeks… looking forward to it, too!
Keep on Rockin’!

Good to hear X… play safe!

Take it easy, man. Sounds like a success! Here’s to coming back stronger than evar!

Well, in spite of all you guys telling me to take it easy, I think I over-did it today. I didn’t go to the gym, but I did move a bunch of firewood into the shop for the stove. And now I’m sitting here with my leg elevated and wrapped in ice, waiting for that Vicoden to kick in! LOL! (I could always chase it with a shot of whiskey…)

Well, maybe tomorrow I’ll be a little smarter and really take it easy…
Keep On Rockin!

It is amazing what we will go through TO GET WOOD eh?!
I know, that was bad… couldn’t resist… lol
