So Injured, So Old: 600lb DL Before I Die

As for the knee, goodluck, it’s hard to work around knee pain, I’ve been there, 10 years of only benching and curling, seemed to fix mine

The list of blogs, well my wife leaves for work 7am and then I get my daughter on the school bus around 8am, then wonder around until she get’s home at 4pm, so I found a couple blogs to pass the time,( everything else seems stupid, and comercial) I think you’ll get a kick out of coach Steel as well, cranky old fucker, like’s to lift twice a week, and out lift all the young bucks, ya know, his older stuff’s better, he’s gotten a little boring lately, anyway got an hour to clean the house, before everyone starts gettin home, goodluck with the knee.[/quote]

Never would I make fun of ethnicity. Except for Polacks. Ha ha ha ha. Wait, stupid me, I am a Polack!

You spell how you want, I’ll spell how my spellchecker tells me to.

Lift 2 times per week. Where have I heard that? Good design for old people. Wendler even does it, or says he does.

When I lifted 3 times per week my knee was happier. Go figure.

I tore the cartilage the first time 2 Octobers ago: worked up to a deadlift triple at 535, did 5 hard, fast triples at 4 something. Then I’m like “do speed squats!!!” 325 on the bar, 3rd set of 3, I’m going to rack the bar and I scuff my foot on the carpet, sorta trip and “krak”. 2 weeks off. Weeks of air squats. Then the bar, then blah, blah. Within a year I am squatting mid 400s again.

Was supposed to get an MRI then surgery but the clinic could not seem to coordinate with my insurance company, just couldn’t keep track of numbers, I got pissed, and figured I’m too old for another scalpel anyway, I’ll rehab myself.

Now, my health ensurer sent me a “pebble” which goes on my shoe and counts my steps, downloads to my computer when I walk nearby. Walking aggravates the cartilage, lifting does not. So I have to walk 5,000 steps per day. My knee is getting more and more sore. Last 3 weeks pretty bad. Yesterday krak.

I’m glad they are looking out for my well being.

That pull looked awesome!
I want that kind of strength.
You actually look like me a few years down the road, except my goatee (hair doesn’t grow on my noggin any more) is skipping gray and going straight to white!

Thanks!

My goatee is pretty damn white. I think the dark and dingy cellar makes it look gray.

Bald(ish) headed guys with goatees will rule the world, or maybe just this site, or maybe just this thread. You, AnytimeJake, me. This is how it it starts.

Okay, boring bench(ish)workout posting…

I was 56.2 years old yesterday, I am older than this now.

I weighed in at 215.4 yesterday morning.

Had to rip through yesterday’s workout and skip a few things. A friend of the wife died and we went to the showing. Posting this morning.

Friday February 28, 2014

Bench (sort of)

18" grip for all benching.

Warmups:

45x15
95x8
135x5

PISS BREAK

185x2
205x1
225x1
245x1 (13 minutes)

Top sets (95% of 285):

270 x 7 sets x 1 rep (16 minutes) (all reps paused)

PISS BREAK

Speed bench (60% of 285):

175 x 10 sets x 3 reps (9 minutes, 6 seconds)

Dips, body weight, to failure:

20, 11, 8.5, 4.5 (3 minutes and 12 seconds)

Time to add weight to the dips.

Chins, body weight, to failure:

13, 4, 3, 2 (3 minutes 10 seconds)

Some of you (many of you) will recognize my top set weight of 270 because it is one of your warm up weights.

Knee still pretty sore after deads Tuesday. I thought it would affect my bench since I have my feet sort of under me and I push hard. But nothing. Actually the knee felt better after benching. Note to self.

Nice work, i wouldn’t sweat the 270, I’m at about 650 members at my club right now, and I can count on one hand how many of them could bench 270, in good form, with no spotter asistance, but I’m willing to bet I have over 100 member’s that would say they bench 315 + There seems to be a big discrepency, between the strength of guys on the internet, and guys I see in real life, spending 18hrs a day in a gym, they must come out at night after I’m gone, I guess !

Anyways what’s this timing stuff you do, I see 16 min, and 3min written here and there, are you timing the sets, or where your at in your workout. I’m only wondering, because I was intrduced to these CAT squats this past week, where I only take 1 min rest between sets, it just kind of woke me up to the time element, I’ve never given it much thought before. I always just lift once I’ve caught my breath, build strength on strength day, and conditioning on conditioning day, but these kicked my ass. later

It’s a meme that kids like me use. Nevermind.

Sure, but I do not get a sense of wild acceleration when I read my log title. Was curious about how he formed the relationship between it and his meme. Maybe he only talks in memes and this was the closest phrase he had to express his feelings?

You kids…

Hey, out bench me lately? (Of course you have.)

The meme itself is hard to explain; getting it is done by seeing it used multiple times.

And regarding the bench, not even close. You out bench most of my friends. I’m still 18 though, so I’ll get there.

Okay, maybe I can see it.

I’m now contemplating if his is the best post yet.

is everyone smokin dope, what just happend to this thread, and what the fuck’s a meme, and is Mina293 a M / F handle ?

I come here for wisdom of the ages, and I get a drug flash back !

Thanks, I needed that. Knew I could count on you AJ, you are a fucking rock.

Meme…word coined by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins back in the '70s, you know, when I was growing up. I’ve read some of his work, one of his books. Meme - A societal virus like a religion or the growing popularity of the most resent buzzword inflated bench routine.

So…anything that goes viral. In the old days we called it slang. “That’s what she said, yuk, yuk, yuk.” Sigh.

Still, how it applies to this thread is well beyond me.

I’d rather get a post like “hey I read your log title and realized, fuck I’m gonna die too so I decided to do really hard shit and get stupid strong, thanks mskee, I wish I could bear your love child.”

Now that’s a post.

Again, good to hear back from you AJ, I needed that.

C’mon people stay on topic, which is:

1.) Me watching how AJ trains his bench so that I can get better.
2.) Occasional bike subthread
3.) All of you watching me like I was NASCAR, waiting for me to crash and burn.

Now, let’s get back to it!

Major overreaction.

Extremely entertaining log. You are majorly strong. You give some of the best advice on deadlifting I’ve read anywhere. Yes, you should post that deadlift video in the Over 35 forum for inspiration.

Kids today don’t use complete sentences anymore. And no complete thoughts are expressed either; everything is in some sort of shorthand to which I (and apparently you) are not privy. It’s a byproduct of the whole texting/tweeting thing. I’m still holding out on not getting a “smart” (then why do the phones make so many people dumber?) phone.

Anytime Jake is one of my favorite posters to read as well. Your bantering is awesome to read. I’m afraid to post in his log though…not internet tough guy, I’m not…

I actually threw away my smart phone a week ago. I always got nervous and twitchy when it vibrated in my pants, which is a bad sign. I have more peace of mind now. But the rest is correct.

THIS is the best post ever. I laughed a real laugh.

I’m also scared of AnytimeJake. Mostly of his bench.

I’m cool with slang and the guy didn’t mean anything bad. I was simply curious as to the connection. All I got was “nevermind” and I got torqued. All I wanted was story.

Thanks on the DL comments. I’m pretty sure that I’m an expert on everything so now I can put a check mark on deads.

I’ll post the vid, thanks

Internet tough guy :), try out of work worn out soilder, trying to deal with being a sober family man, which seems to be my toughest challange yet.

Llifting weights, and ocasionaly tearing apart some mecanical contraption in my garage are the only bouts of sanity I get, and lifting of weights part is even loosing it’s sanity, as I get overly informed, and complicated by the net. As for the bench, seeing as it’s the only lift I’ve been able to train consistantly since birth, I’m not sure how it ever slipped to where it is, and I’m fighting to get it back to 4 plates ( 325x5 today) Thanks for the kind words, though I’m not 100% sure they weren’t sarcastic.

I do have a rebuilt right hand, and left shoulder, but I’ve fought through those, and managed a 425 bench in 07, 15lbs shy of double BW, which was my goal at the time, that was the reason I finaly gave in to the dark side, and ran 3 cycle’s of Tren, to get from 365 to 425, then I was incarcerated for a year, so I never quite got my double BW bench, still on my list of goals, but kind of focused on getting my squat and dead to that double BW status first, now that my legs are train-abel again. The way things are looking lately, I might have to give in to the dark side again, we shall see!

As for Mina, not to be a dick, or more of a dick, I visited your log, and still couldn’t figure what side of the gender pool you swim in, not that it really matter’s, but it makes it easier to give advice. Coach Steel has a Tracy chick pulling over 500 on a weeekly basis, so the strength lines are getting blured either way.

Alright off to do family bullshit, my grandfather’s got a week to live, and were throwing him a party today at Mom’s house, not sure he’s really up to it, but I get to go snarl at all my welfare cousin’s wating around for thier inheritance. I hate fat looser’s that ride the system, and I hate them even more when they’re related to me, so it should be fun, mabey I’ll get to punch out one of they’re boyfriends, Good times

Anytime Jake is one of my favorite posters to read as well. ‘’ Your bantering is awesome to read. ‘’ LOL how’s that for Banter. later

I’m an 18 year old man. Make fun of my strength levels all you want, but in the future, you won’t.

I really wasn’t making fun of strength, thats the truth, I work with kids, and we all start somewhere, it was ‘‘Mina’’ that was screwing me up. I swear that was an honest question, just trying to get straight in my twisted mind who I was talking to, and there was no way to be subtle, I did check your log first, and couldn’t find referance, so I just asked. No one else will own up to it, but I’ll bet I wasn’t the only one confused by your name, anyway no offence ment, thanks later

Fuckin’ A, WEIGHTED DIPS!!!
They’re great for popping my back!
Your bench may be “only” in the high 200’s - low 300’s range but you can pull 500 like it doesn’t weigh a damn thing! The most I’ve pulled in nigh unto a decade is 405. lol

@ Jake:
Ah, the elusive (for me) 2x bodyweight bench. I’ve come close over the years, but I’ve never done it.
When I was boxing 4 days a week (early to mid 20’s) I weighed 175 and usually worked out with 225 for sets of 20 or so. 1rm was 340.
Had kids, got fat, benched 350 (ass in the air) @ 210 bw.
Later on I was able to drop some weight, again benched 350 (ass down this time) but at 183 bw.
Dieted down to 165, very little lifting at that time. Unknown 1rm.
Now 192 bw and my projected max varies from 340-360. 1rm test this week.
I’ve never run any ped’s (unless you count over the counter andro back in 2001 or 2002) even though it is very tempting. Kinda scared of it though, judging by how badly I fucked up my diet, I’m hesitant to start monkeying with my endocrine system!

Sorry about the hijack.
