Snatches are Dangerous

So how much are you guys snatching?

I have been consistant the last 5 weeks. Before (years ago)I toyed with snatches and could get 135lbs. Over the last 5 weeks I’m up to 150lbs for sets, each set consisting of 3 reps. I’m finally (5 weeks of snatch and oh squat training) oh squating 135 for 5*5. I’m very happy about that. Most gym goers think I’m a weirdo becuase I’m squating in an unconventional manner. They all freak if I lose my balance because I calmly dump the bar, it doesn’t sound calm (even with bumpers). You’d think I was commiting a crime by the stares I get.

Some really precise measurements.

Thanks. That’s interesting - in between deadlift and squat width, closer to squat width.

The silence is deafening, LOL!

My best snatch is 170 pounds at a bodyweight of somewhere between 175 and 180 pounds.

Haven’t maxed in over a month; I spent last month on a cycle of 5s, peaking with 2 power snatches + 3 squat snatches at 65 kilos (143 pounds). Best overhead squat is 180x3 (I think).

Goal is to hit 85 a month an a half from now - just over bodyweight.

I power snatch, hang snatch and db snatch. I do not do the full snatch but I want to when I get some time to stretch my hips and shoulders more!

The foot stomp I’m sure is not an intrinsic part of a well executed oly lift. It seems to help beginners to learn to move faster. I know I can’t jump very high moving slowly;^)

I usually tell them "Now there’s a moment in this lift that you can actually get both your feet to leave the platform (quick demo). They then execute the lift with that in mind and you see an instant acceleration when compared to previous attempts. Just a learning tool.

That’s all I got to say about that!

I haven’t maxed out in quite some time in the snatch, working on technique and general strength, but I have done 205lbs at 185-190 Bw.

I have done a 175lb snatch at 170lbs bw quite easily.

But I’m very inconsistent. For example, I could barly get up 165lbs today (I did this for a double a few days ago). Lack of rest is usually the culprit. :frowning:

You guys sure are lifting more than me. Since I’ve been consistant for 5 weeks now, I’ve steadily increased my power snatches and oh squat weight every w/o. I wonder how long that’s going to last? It seems like you guys are snatching your body weight quite easily. I can’t even dream of snatching my body weight (which is about 200lbs). I haven’t tried over 150lbs, but I think I could manage 165lbs.

I’d really like to get 15 overhead squats of my body weight (on a bar of course). As of now, I haven’t attempted one at my bodyweight, I haven’t progressed that far yet.

How is your guys overhead squats?

I was kind of inspired by Krolls drop snatch/oh squat video a few months ago, I want to have that kind of balance and explosiveness. As I stated in a previous post, I’m doing reps with 135 (oh squats) but they lack the balance and explosiveness that I know I have, right now it’s just practice, practice, practice…then ice my right shoulder!

you do snatches in a commercial gym???[/quote]

I do them at a Planet Fitness (yeah they are kinda crap, kinda ok, but it’s a membership I can afford) and more often than not I get people asking me what I am doing and how can they learn it. Or they ask me if I am training for a comp. Either way I am waiting for an overbearing whitehair or soccer mom to come and tell me I’m being dangerous.

could you do cleans or sntaches starting with a sumo deadlift stance? ive always wondered because ive never seen anyone do it before

Could you? Yes. Should you? No.

Using this type of stance during the first pull would not only ruin the line of trajectory, but would also compromise your ability to safely catch the bar. Bad idea. There are no positive consequences to performing the lifts like this. None. Don’t do it.

Hopefully I’m getting my point across…

I would not recommend it. You will take away the majority of the power you would be able to produce. The snatch and clean are explosive lifts. Just try jumping as high as you can from a hip width stance and then try with a wide/sumo stance. Your ability to provide an explosive movement is limited by the wider stance.

Wow, I’m impressed you reacted with so much restraint. If one of the old dudes on the smith machine started telling me what to do after I just “snapped” my body wieght I would poopy on the floor right there and be like “LOOK WHAT YOU MADE ME DO!!”

That kinda shit makes a littel puke come up in the back of my mouth that i must swallow down again.

It’s worse when some potbellied dude with pointy bewbies says to me:

"You shouldn’t:

squat so low;
without a belt;
with so much weight;
without the smith machine"

Then I do C&P and snatch just to piss him off. If i can I also like to let fly some stupid farts from all the apples and spinach I eat. that usually gets him away from me. Then I walk by his station and just basically shit myself.

I think a more passive aggressive beanie (toque) and ipod approach would be a nicer way to avoid people.
