Snatch Grip Vs. Clean Grip

Using the grip workouts you discussed earlier I’ve been messing with grip widths on the oly bar. I know you mentioned the snatch grip should place the bar in the crease when at a knee bend slight. A clean grip is my normal bench grip outside shoulder width.

On the Snatch grip the crease level puts my hands out too far for a comfortable grip, needs to come in an inch for a solid grip… Is this okay?

It’s not optimal. There are exceptions to the “hip crease rule” in the snatch, but it’s mostly found in superheavy lifters who are tall with long arms and for whom even a collar-to-collar grip isn’t wide enough to have the bar in the hip crease when in the power position.

That is not optimal and one of the reasons why you see superheavy lifters snatching the same weight a the 94 or 105kg lifters despite cleaning 20-40kg more.

Are you using a hook grip? A hook grip, once you are used to it, is necessary to keep a strong grip on heavy snatch work. It might take you 2-3 workouts to get used to it, but it will make your grip much more solid on the snatch.

What makes more sense? Using a grip that gives you less mechanical advantages but feels stronger or using the grip that allows for the best mechanics AND WORK ON GRIP STRENGTH?

It’s much easier to strengthen a weak grip than to bypass less than optimal leverages.

Hi, while I love the snatch grip high pulls, I can’t help but feel my delts aren’t as stimulated as traps or hamstrings… I’ve been toying with a clean grip high pull, where the goal is to recruit the deltoids more. I feel I’m able to squeeze the delts at the top better, and I can lift more weight overall…

Do you see any merit in a clean (slightly wider than shoulder) grip if deltoid stimulation is the goal?

Sure. As long as you can do it without shoulder issues (some people might be at a greater risk of shoulder impingement with a clean grip)… a good alternative is to use an intermediate grip, between a snatch and clean grip. I personally do not have that issue since my snatch grip isn’t much wider than my clean grip.

i’m really finding a groove with clean grip pulls now, its fueling rapid high pull PR’s and delt stimulation at the minute haha.
