Snap Back

I was inspired by Maschy’s video yesterday (who wasn’t inspired by it?) to head into the gym this morning and get those 10 chinups that I set out to get in 2010. One day late.

I got 'em. I went fast. A bit more leg swing and subtle cheating than I’d like. But I’m damn happy. Not bad for a 45-year-old who had her shoulder rebuilt seven months ago.

I’ve been so inspired by following the Oly lifting on Carl’s log as well as DCA and FarmerBrett’s latest efforts. I used to do this type of lifting regularly but let it lapse in the last few years. Today I tried a power clean with a 20-lb. bar. It was a bit scary with my shoulder, probably more psychologically scary than anything. But I was able to do two sets of eight reps. I imagine this could be an area of serious growth for me in 2011. Also tried some OHPing. Not so great. I just can’t handle any weight overhead. And I mean ANY weight. In time, perhaps.

So Frenchy asked about 2011 goals. I want to do three or four powerlifting meets in 2011, one of which would be raw. In gear, I’d like a 200±lb. squat, bodyweight bench, and 2.3x bodyweight DL. Raw, I’m chasing a 154-lb. squat, 100-lb. bench, and 226-lb. DL. Nothing too impressive, but they’re my goals and that makes them pretty important to me.

Forgot to mention that I heard from my surgeon last week. Just checking up on me. In response, I emailed him a few vids from my last meet. Think I’ll send him the chinup video too.

Happy New Year everyone.

WooHoo! another nice chin-up video.

Lookin’ forward to the March meet with you, have a great new year!

Nice job! You beat me fair and square. I hate that (cause I hate to be beaten) but I am SO happy for you that you met your goal and are pretty much all fixed. It will be fun to watch you compete this year.

I haven’t written down my 2011 goals yet cause I’m still ruminating over them. I’d like a bodyweight bench and a 225 deadlift, so we’re pretty close on there.

Your surgeon likes you. Really! Who wouldn’t?

KP those chins were awesome! Congrats on the pr! That was tremendous work and you should be very proud.

I bet there wasn’t many men queueing up for the chinup bar after witnessing that!

Very intimidating.

Nice job there Snippity Snap!

Great job on those chins! Way to start the new year with a bang. Looking forward to watching you attack your 2011 goals.

Congrats K!

Great goals too!

Great chins, also nice choice in chucks. I am rocking the exact same style I think.

Woo hoo!! You got those chins with no problem! Awesome! And yeah, you should be damn proud - especially coming off the shoulder surgery. Incredible work woman, congrats! Also you kept yourself nice and tight throughout, that’s enviable.

And great work work with the Oly lifting! You’re going to make a mockery out of me aren’t ya…

Great work Snap! Can’t wait to see what you bring in the new year!

Chins were good, but I really liked the deadlift video, what with the stripy socks, sympathy arm waving, and two very solid reps.

Jumping the gun by probably at least a year, in the 53kg weight class, and 45-49 age group, the first place finisher at Nationals last year did a 42kg snatch and 56kg clean and jerk. Some numbers to think about.

awesome chins Snap!

considering how far you’ve come, you’re an inspiration. I would have probably stopped what ever I was doing to stare at you if I was in the same gym. Maybe even setup my deadlift right next to you to see how pretty you were when you got angry

congrats on the chins! I’m showing this to my girlfriend that just had shoulder surgery this week and can’t wait to get back to lifting !

you talk about my lifting being amazing. THAT is amazing!!! awesome job on those chins.

Wow great job! Good luck with the meets and keep going!

Nice chins snap. That is all a testament to your determination and sheer bloody mindedness. I can’t wait to see how you make out at your meets this year. You’ve set your goals but don’t let them hold you back. I bet you’ll be surprised at how quickly you surpass them. You have more drive and focus than a lot of people I see posting on this site.

Thank you for all the kind comments. I have really worked hard since my surgery and am proud of my efforts. I’ll never be a world-class lifter, but it won’t be for lack of trying.

In analyzing the squat program my coach put in place for me, I decided I wanted to throw on the wraps and bump up the numbers a little sooner.

Today’s training:

Squat
5/70
4/80
3/95
2/115
1/125
5/135 wraps on
5/140

Reverse Band Squat
5/160 wraps on
5/175

Ahh, the fun of knee wraps. Takes some getting used to after a nine-month hiatus. Also my walkouts were ugly. Not used to holding this much weight. Realized after I finished squatting that this session was the first one that I didn’t feel pain in my shoulder from holding the bar since my surgery. That is progress.

Sumo DL
5/115
3/5/140

These felt easy. First time I can ever say that. I narrowed my stance and widened my grip. Kinda like an Eddie Coan stance. And it worked way better for me. I think my numbers can jump up here now. I may even gain parity with my conventional numbers.

Finished up with GMs, hammie curl, and calf raises.

I’d love to see a video of your sumo set-up. For obvious reasons! If it works for you, it could work for me.

Yay for no shoulder pain while squatting!

Did your original program call for squats and DLs on the same day? or are you modifying it?

I’ve never done GMs but am thinking of introducing them. Are they helping your squats?

Great job on the chins little lady.
