Wide stance squats, aye? I might try these with tiny weights just to see…[/quote]
So funny you say this. I thought of you right away when I did these because of the necessity to push knees apart (which I don’t normally ever think of when squatting) and the carryover benefit to a sumo DL. The amazing thing is I hit perfect depth with these because it’s damn near impossible to go deep. I will try to video these next week.
Kpsnap–I really admire the thoughtful approach you take with your training and technique–I hope I get to that point some day with mine. You’ll find a way to reach your goals I’m sure. For whatever it’s worth, I think your DL goal is realistic. I say go for it.

Wide(ish) stance works best for me. I tried for a while touching my toes to the power rack sides but then worked in just a bit. now my toes are about 2 inches from the base, but being 6’1" that may not be all that wide. It does help give a depth cue because those hip flexors act like a rubberband for me.

Here’s what I’ve learned: Late-night dancing + alcohol + an extended roll in the hay does not make for the most productive 7 am training session.

hehehe
should have just added on an early morning roll in the hay and put off training until later…

Nonsense, this is how I train many Saturdays (minus the dancing part though, usually). This teaches one how to perform in adverse situations. Or as one training partner, whose wife is in the music biz and they are out in bars till close most Friday nights, states: ‘makes those long 12 hour meets seem like a picnic’. Another training partner has created a bar graph mapping out the ratio of late night partying to PRs. Very scientific.
Yeah, Pete, that was an excuse. I train that way many Saturdays too, minus the alcohol.
But now I’ve got a UTI (bladder/kidney). Peeing blood today. Scared the shit outta me. Never had that happen before. Got on antibiotics pronto and pushed back tomorrow’s training session to the afternoon in the hopes I can stay the course with my squat day. Nothing a little ibu and a good mindset can’t fix, right? Plus, I’m still squatting to the box of shame. Which means it should feel real easy for me.

EXTENDED?! The mind wanders…
Great work as per usual!
I’m slowly starting to learn what is involved in working with a coach. Its nice that you’ve had yours for so long and trust him completely. I still regard my coaches with suspicion, especially since they’re rather pushy. Did he give you any rationale for the new DL program?
I saw that widestance usage in Kimba’s log! i’ll be interesting in seeing how that works for you.

The mind should wander. It’s what keeps things interesting.

I trust that my coach has my best intentions at heart. I do question and sometimes tinker with what he wants me to do. And he encourages me to question. I actually changed up the DL program he put in place for me. And he agreed with the changes. But sometimes I just do what I want to do. And he knows that’s how it is with me.
