I swear, by next month you’ll already be beating all of my numbers on your way to powerlifting goddess status. You probably aren’t even obsessing about your shoulder anymore. What does your mind do with all that extra time, I wonder?
One of the number one things I hate about women is the inability to gracefully accept a compliment without self-denigration. In exasperation, I’ve actually said to friends after complimenting them and having them brush it off, “the correct response was thank you”.
Sumo will be your little bitch if you want it bad enough.

Yeah, my daughter’s a superstar. I’m definitely the proud mom. She really just started in gymnastics, but already has decent poise. After the meet, she was upset with herself. Didn’t think she did well enough. So similar to how I am. I gave her a little lecture about saying “thank you” when people compliment rather than finding some way to diminish her accomplishments. It’s definitely a girl/women thing.
Today’s training
Squat
10/45
8/75
5/5/100 (90% of bodyweight)
RDL
10/45
Sumo Deadlift
10/75
3/8/100
Have I mentioned how much I HATE sumo DLing? Well, I really hate it and suck at it as well. Give me conventional any day.
Good Morning
3/8/65
Seated Hamstring Curl
3/8/70
Never done ^^ this machine before. Didn’t really like it, but the gym where I was training this morning didn’t have a lying hammie machine.
Finished the workout with TWO CHINUPS! Working my way back up to ten.
Sumo sucks. Anyone who enjoys it is not right in the head. Cool stuff with the kid.
sumo is awesome… it’s what all the cool kids are doing. it can be really hard to do with all that gear on though:)

I have done exactly the same thing to friends. Drives me batty. Compliment a woman and she points out why she isn’t deserving. Compliment a man and he puffs up and [rightfully] says “thank you.”

I don’t want it bad enough. Conventional DL is my best lift. And I have no intention of changing that. But it does frustrate me that I can’t seem to be good at sumo. Maybe all the cool kids lift sumo, but I don’t mind not being cool.
Back to my daughter, she does have natural poise. She got her highest score on beam, which is the event she struggles with the most. It’s not that her skills were that good, but her finishes and body positioning were great. And the judge obviously rewarded her for that.
Today’s training. All rehab work. I’m making very slow but steady gains. An extra rep here or an extra pound there. That’s how it seems to be when rehabbing a cuff.
2 minutes hand bike warmup
Lying “L” External Rotation (I’m not getting any stronger or gaining flexibility here. Sucks.)
3/10/3
This next series is done lying on a very high table. So it’s extremely isometric. I hold each contraction for a two-second pause. Makes it much harder.
A) Lying DB Rear Delt
3/10/4
B) Lying DB Kroc Row
3/10/10
C) Lying DB Straight Back Lift
3/10/8
1 chinup . . . I saw a guy who had cuff surgery two months ago. We’ve been sharing experiences over the past weeks. I approached him and said “lemme show you something.” He proceeded to watch me do said chinup. He looked grim. He can’t lift his arm past shoulder level yet. I was showing off, I know.
Flat BB Bench
3/10/30
A) Bentover BB Row
3/10/30
B) Lying Shoulder Punches
3/15/10
C) DB Shrugs with long hold at top
3/10/22.5
A) DB 45 Degree Raise
3/12/3
B) DB Lateral Raise
3/12/3
C) DB Military Press
3/8/3
Yep. I tried an over head press with 3-lb. DBs. Scary and painful. STILL. Ugh. Will revisit these in a few more weeks. After cuff surgery, any overhead work is extremely difficult and unstable.
A) Lat Pulldown
3/8/60 . . . steadily moving up in weight here
B) Weighted Hypers
3/8/35
A) Leg Extension
3/9/80
B) Pushups on Knees
3/8
^^ Pushups were pretty exciting! I can’t remember the last time I did them on my knees, but I’m pretty thrilled to be there now. Not like it’s a ton of work since my upper body is pretty lean. It’s when my shoulder has to handle the weight of my ass and thighs that it will become work.
Tomorrow I see the surgeon. I’m hoping it’s to say “goodbye . . .”
My training partner is now ready to take some major medals at Masters 3 after rotator two yrs ago and doing two knees. His goal was to kick my ass on the bench at masters2. He will kick my ass in masters3. You will get better and stronger. Conventional is the only way to lift. I suck but can’t change to sumo. I would recommend doing the other lift to make your con better. Ask PMPM.
Highlight of day: 3 chinups. Two sets. Full stretch.
Saw my surgeon this morning. This was my FIFTH post-surgery appointment. He put me through a battery of strength tests. I did well. Then he said, “Tell me what you’re doing in the gym these days.” So I gave him a little summary and asked if I could start benching (which I’m sort of already doing with really teeny weights). He responded, “I’d like you to wait another two months.” To which I responded, “That’s not going to happen.” And then the negotiating began.
I’d say I won. But that danged surgeon still won’t release me! Wants me back in another eight weeks. He genuinely seems to care about my ongoing progress and long-term prognosis.
