Smolov for 3wks Holiday/Football

Hi,

we have no field training or training together for about 3wks around christmas.

Because I would really love to try the Smolov Squat Program I was thinking of doing the base cycle over these 3 weeks. In addition to the squats I wanted to continue my 5/3/1 Bench (just the prescribed reps) 1x a week to maintain upper body strength.

Do you think this is a good idea at all or should I just continue my regular training program!?
(or any idea for a 3wk special program I could do over christmas that pushes one - or more - aspects of training really hard!?)

Also I am a little worried about recovery after the cycle as we start our Pre-Season Training right after these holidays and I don’t want to be fucked up for the next couple weeks. Any info on this !?

I’ve been running the base mesocycle for 2 weeks now along with 5/3/1, and as long as I eat a ton it has been no problem at all. So just pound back the food (marginally clean of course) and you should be good to go.

How did you set up the 5/3/1 over the week and how do you handle the reps - do you only use the prescribed reps!?

Do you do any accessory work, probably not…

5/3/1 goes on days that I am not doing smolov, with the exception of Military press, that one goes on monday or Wednesday.

For the last set I usually just double the prescribed reps and stop there.

Accessory work depends on how I feel that day. I’m really trying to bring up my back so I do quite a bit of work for that. I have a pretty bad shoulder injury so I throw in ALOT of rehab/prehab type stuff for that.

It amounts to a pretty solid work load, but I eat quite a bit to not get worn down by it.

Anyone has an opinion on the benefits of this endeavour for football strength !?
