It seems quite a few of the T-Nation authors are slowly getting on board with the idea that carbs before bed are a good thing when trying to gain muscle.
Thats something I personally agree with, if you want to get the most out of that 8 hours you’d better give the body what it needs to grow.
Anyhow, what are the best slow digesting carbs for a just-before-bed snack??
Right now I’m downing a nice casein shake and looking for what carb would be best to add to my routine. Thanks.
I don’t know the answer to this question exactly, but I know that a lot of people have cottage cheese and peanut butter before bed.
I also had a question of whether there is a time too late to have carbs, but it seems that there isn’t by this post. Is that true?

Well that most definitely depends on your goals.
I’m a hardgainer, I already eat ~4,000 calories a day, and I can’t really afford to lose a possible extra 8 hours of growing time.
But for someone who is worried about putting on fat, carbs late at night are another story.
Okay. Well then how long before bed would you suggest cutting out carbs? I don’t really like to do that, and I’m in the process of trying to gain muscle, so it’s probably not the BEST idea, but just as a reference I’d like to know
I’ve been eating oats, grains and cereals before bed for years. I’m glad it’s back “in trend” because it definately works for growth and energy levels.
Stick to veggies, whole grains and oats and you should be ok. I personally make a meal before bed, usually chicken spaghetti with whole grain pasta.
On my cheat day I’ll have 2 scoops casein protein mixed in with rice pudding before bed, tastes good & is far more nutritious than its been made out to be!
-Oats
-Peanut butter
-Casein Protein
-Berries
Pre-bed (or anytime) anabolic heaven!!
especially awesome if you mix it all up add a little too much water and stick it in the fridge for 20 mins for oats to soak it all up!!!
SHadoW
That sounds pretty good alright, gonna try it and do an ol’ switcharoo from oats to sticky rice
