I suppose that it COULD actually work, and probably had a small success rate in tests, most likely due to the placebo effect, which is where people believe something so strongly it actually effects them.
I read something somewhere about people losing weight when being given a new miracle drug, when half of those who lost weight were being given gel capsules of sugar, just to measure the placebo effect.
