So generally I eat fairly low carbs. Under 150g for the whole day. If I ever eat a larger quantity of higher GI carbs I feel sleepy almost instantly after finishing. Is this because I am insulin resistant or just because my body is not use to those carbs. Any advice is appreciated. Thx
Being fatigued due to reactive hypoglycemia after carbs is a strong sign of insulin resistance however usually reactive hypoglycemia occurs from 2+ hours after high GI carbs, not within the first 2 hours.
I’m not sure how much you’ve read up on CT’s neurotyping system but as long as you’re not fat it’s more likely you’re a type 1 from his system. I am and I can’t have any carbs before training or I just want to nap instead. Type 1’s have naturally high serotonin and low dopamine. Carbs will raise serotonin even higher making which can make you super lethargic/sleepy. Here’s link to the T Nation article.
Yea I’ve been researching his work quite a bit lately. I’m not a type 1 though. I’m most likely a 2b. Maybe 2a. I did the braverman test and I am definitely lower in serotonin. When I do experience the sleepiness after high GI carbs, it’s pretty short lived. I will feel tired for probably only 15 minutes or so and like I said, it happens very quickly after finishing my meal
My guess is that before you eat, your cortisol is starting to rise. This has a stimulating effect. The carbs may shut that down by causing insulin release and refilling glycogen.
I’m 2A and I get tired from carbs, but if I start training before I start to get sleepy, they don’t make me sleepy. Probably because I get a little spurt of adrenaline and also my insulin levels don’t spike.
