Sleep, Metabolism, and Insulin

What effect does sleep have on insulin levels? I know that sleep lowers your metabolic rate - does it also help to bring down blood sugar levels?

The reason I’m asking is because I have a hunch that I make much better gains on days where I nap a little after my workout and having my PWO shake. My thoughts are that insulin spikes and drives nutrients directly to muscles who are then being repaired naturally by the body during the sleep process.

Yes I used the search function btw and found this: Sleeping After Workout - Supplements and Nutrition - Forums - T Nation

Barr says it’s no good but at what rate does blood sugar drop during sleep if you pound a big recovery shake before getting into the covers? Shouldn’t you still digest and release insulin?

Thanks for thoughts

What are you trying to do? Long, quality sleep is like freaking key to being lean and overall healthy. There is a lot you can do to accomplish that as well. An amazing book on the subject is “Lights Out: Sleep, Sugar and Survival” I dont remember the author. You can literally sleep your way into leanness.

Its true, I went in to a coma once and woke up 6 years later fucking SHREDDED

Good point, if you look at most coma patients they are all leaned the f**k out. We could be on to something!

lol sleep does help, deep sleep causes the body to release higher amounts of HGH which burn fat and build muscle.

More mucle = more calories burnt.

Also HGH itself causes fat to be burnt.

Okay so long story short I’m going to sleep for 10 hours a night, nap for about 2 a day. train 10 times a week, eat a maintainance caloric whole food macro cycling diet, and see what happens. My hypothesis : hypertrophy/muscular strenth gains, neural strength gains, body fat reduction.

I’ve hit some massive PRs after 4 hours sleep following a heavy night out. And I’ve had some days where I got 8-9 hours sleep the night before and had the shittiest workouts imaginable. I don’t think you need to go to that extreme, unless you’re earning money from this.

And you will prove nothing, since you have no control for comparison.

You will also have no life, but that’s another matter
