Not that it applies to you or to dive too deep too fast, but there comes a point when faced with a true and very simple dichotomy- Change or Die.
Which one are you going to choose?
I’ve faced this one a few times before. How I choose is self evident. Unfortunately, I’ve seen plenty of people who I’ve been side by side with at crunch time go the other way, with full knowledge of what is to come.
Thats actually a pretty broad subject. One person’s shitburger is another person’s holy grail of unobtanium.
Finished out my week of cardiac rehab strong. (Within the context of the whole situation)
Another session, more good decreases in hr., bp, and good incremental increases in everything performance related.
Felt like ass today. Had Sunday Night syndrome where you lay there all night thinking about every thing you need to get to sleep for, which caused everything I wanted to be good for to suck.
Did shake it off by the end of the session today though. The last thing I do is rowing, and I popped up from that and could actually feel that my body and brain finally woke up and wanted to get to work. ![]()
There’s another new intern there, and she’s a cute little thing. Bright, adorable, and always comments on my arms!
Says “Oh, you got the guns out today!” because I wear a tank top for these sessions.
I should pump up for the next one
, and just chalk it up as a long post work out cardio session.
Popped into the log and I was a bit alarmed at what was taking place…
The tree stuff is kind of a bust, and the welding isn’t exactly paying the bills, so…
Gotta pay the bills somehow!
Had some leftover chicken so I put these together.
Was pretty simple. Just sliced chicken tenders, a dollop of sour cream and some shredded cheddar folded up, a little egg wash & bake. Not bad.
Also finished up another good week. They’re now encouraging me to exercise independently (but with caution/limits) So I’m going to start that again with more diligence and effort. I’ll take it as a go sign. Yellow, but go none the less. ![]()
Ooh…food porn is such a wonderful thing to wake up to
So I think you know I’m working at the hospital, and there was a notice this week that the cardiac rehab center is open to employees again (post-covid) from 4pm-6am. Is this somewhere I’d want to go? What’s there?
I bet it would be somewhere you’d like, at least to get some time in, if not a full work out.
The one I go to has a decent bank of the commercial grade treadmills, elipticals, and airdyne, along with a good stock of recumbents and a few concept2 rowers.
There was a small rack of hex heads and a couple of other machines but they were removed for floor space in order to meet distancing guidelines.
Essentially a big cardio gym with wi-fi ekg’s and trained medical staff monitoring things.
I’d do pics but no cameras etc. allowed.
It’s nice that yours is opened to staff. I thought it was unusual that the one I was at wasn’t, but did catch the program director getting in an exercise snack
. She’s a runner too.
I have a treadmill and a Concept2, but am absolutely jonesing for friends. I wonder if I’d meet any if I got on a schedule? The place is two doors down from my clinic, and is pretty much on my way to the parking lot.
It would be worth a look. The whole bunch at mine seem like very good, easy to be friends with people. Educated, caring, and generally very friendly.
I know I’m on the other side of the desk in the situation and the receiving end of professional decorum but not far off the mark.
Me and the one guy end up talking and laughing a lot because I noticed he had a grateful dead shirt on under his scrubs. Then when describing the one nuclear stress test drug/sensation I said “It’s like a Big hit from a nitrous baloon…” and we both started cracking up.
So now he puts some of his own mixes of good music on the gyms sound system for our sessions. ![]()
Anyways, there’s lots of fun and good interaction there.
Also, just occurred to me- Somebody has to be first. I’ve noticed with work stuff especially that if nobody does it then nobody else will either. Then these types of offerings end up dying on the vine for lack of interest.
Thanks for the lowdown. I doubt heart center staff would be there when I am, I think I have to code in. But I really don’t know. I just figured if I hit it Thursdays at 5:30 or whatever, routinely, I’d find other people doing the same. Is it really worth it to drag clothes to work with me to ride a stationary bike? Hard to say. I’ve also been thinking about joining a cardio class of some sort (spin, Zumba, whatever), but now we’re adding money to the equation. I mean, I taught aerobics once upon a time, and again have weights and equipment here at home. So there’s no real justification for doing it. But having a friend who works out would be SO NICE. I’ve finally had to admit defeat in convincing my regular friends to do stuff with me.
I’m going to a book club meeting on the 22nd. Maybe I’ll find someone there. Though it’s a books and bars kind of book club, haha, so maybe not.
That’s probably a good plan.
I know you’ve referred to your area as pretty rural and have a hard time getting good dressing, but the one I go to is like, REALLY busy for the heart stuff. My time slot is 4:45-6:00 pm at that site, and they have another satellite rehab facility just down the road to accommodate the patient load.
Anyhoo, that was the long way around saying it might be a pretty lively place.
I know you know this stuff, BUT!
It depends on the type of person you are, I guess. I’m very introverted and happy to lift and stuff by myself, my lifting buddy, or with my old, now defunct lifting crew which was 3-4 guys I was really tight with in sobriety & stuff.
Others, more people persons, do better and get good energy from others.
It sounds like the isolation hurt you.
Tonight’s work:
Got the blood flowing with a warm up of delt raises and triceps kickbacks.
Then ohp at 70 lbs, 3 sets of 8.
Veered off course and ended up doing 10x10 @ 110 lbs. on deadlifts, rotating between sldl, and standard.
The cardiac folks encouraged me to drop the weight significantly and increase reps, so I went pretty far in that direction.
It felt good though! I absolutely hit a very clear wall with grip and over all execution on the 7th set. 8,9 and 10 were acts of attrition.
Addendum: Started to cool down on airdyne, put in 5.8 miles in 20 some minutes. Low 20’s. The length of a couple of Tool songs.
That felt good too though.
We’ll see about all that tomorrow though.
Well, today isn’t bad. Maybe I’ll stick with that set/rep scheme for a while and see which factors I can improve upon for progression.
The weight is obviously one. It was just an arbitrary starting point to see what happens if I do “this”. The rest periods were long for a couple of reasons. Main one being that I kinda needed them. Other was that kiddo was lifting with me between my sets.
So I’m going to see how things go with this type of repertoire of repetitions. It too shall be a work in progress.
Edit to add:
Twinning! ![]()
Me & kiddo on the 4th, splashing around and having some fun with some friends and neighbors.
The cardio therapy went good today. There was a fair bit of tightness through the whole posterior from lack of lifting lately, but once warmed up everything was solid. Performance on the rower actually increased significantly even with what felt like less effort. Also probably the first time I’ve felt my lats in like years.
So, @EmilyQ did you check out the place at work? If so, how was it?
I believe @dagill2 and friends have a 500-metre challenge set up for you . . . ![]()
