Skewed Self-Image

Cannot relate - I feel like I have a good grasp on where I’m at, what I should be capable of and what I need to do to get there. And where I stand in the training world hierarchy.

(a step above Bauber, a step below Big Nasty, obviously)

j/k on that last part.

Maybe a counter viewpoint but no I dont feel like this. I am actually pretty comfortable in my own skin and usually look around at the general population being so fat and untrainned that it is the oposite. Gives me quite a confidence and ego boost. I can easily recognize when someone is bigger than me or more developed, and some times i do get a little freaked out when I stand next to them and realize I am actually bigger or leaner or whatever, but most of the time I have a firm understanding of where I am in the food chain. Extra medium for the win!

I prefer not to compare myself to the “normal” population because its so awful for the most part. Also I don’t want to be normal so comparing myself to that seems weird. It’s too easy to look good next to most of the population these days. It’s a bit depressing
I think it is a bit depressing to constantly live in a state of insecurity based on not having confidence in your own body or comparing yourself to those more physically advanced and developed and being disapointed. That just sounds sad.

Some of the stuff being said here is going past working out and bodybuilding as a healthy hobby and/or lifestyle based on constantly improving oneself and instead really just a outlet for a wierd body image disorder that shouldnt be taken lightly.

Say what you guys wants to about Prof X(i do plenty of it trust me) but the dude loves himself and the way he looks. That is much cooler than some people being sad about how they look because they arent Arnold.

Lol I am extremely confident. In how I look my brain ect. I know I look better than 99% of the population. I am saying that is no accomplishment that I am proud of.

You know, I’m looking forward to being a “skinny 195”. I’ve got a looong ways to go.

Speaking of different perspectives and all.

So being better than 99% of the entire world isnt good enough in your book?

lol…really? Maybe in Wisconsin you’re a big fish but not around where I live. LOL…at better than 99% of the population. Thanks for making my morning.

You dont need to be a big fish to be in the 99% percentile. Just find 99 fatter or untrained people and boom you are top 1%. Go to a mall, a sporting event. Find me someone who you do not have to ask DYEL and boom you have a physique 1%. Big guys at the gym, comepitors etc, now you are talking about the 0.01%. Which to me is strange hearing people be upset about their bodies because they arent better than 99.99% of the populous.

As it is now? Even when it wasnt hamburger nation, doesnt mean there were tons of big ripped guys walking around. We can potentially aruge that the majority of the nation/world is much worse than before, but the minority of the muscled few are in greater absolute numbers now more than ever.

No skewed self image here. I’m entirely as awesome as I think I am. lol.

It doesn’t work that way. He said 99% of the population not that he looks better than 99% of the people standing immediately around him at the mall. His self-image is skewed alright but not in the way that the OP meant.

I’m still laughing at the "I look better than 99% of the population. Seriously.

I am still laughing at you not realizing how the majority of the population of planet earth lives. I am sure the slums of india are full of Gold’s gym.

What the fuck James? You’re arbitrarily defining “population” for him. Don’t put words in other people’s mouths man; that’s not cool! As a guy with a statistics background, in the absence of any clarifications or specifications, when I see the word “population” I always default to the population of the world. Population in statistics is the largest group you could plausibly extrapolate your data to. As a human being, I see ryan’s claim of “better than 99% of the population” as being physically more capable than 99% of human beings on Earth. Now given the world-wide population, that claim seems VERY plausible does it not? Do you not think he is stronger and physically more impressive than 99% of the world population? It’s just math, whether you like the way it sounds or not.

You don’t need to belong to a Gold’s gym to be lean. I’ve seen plenty of people in my travels to remote places to know that. Even if you include the entire world in his calculations I bet he’s still not at 99%. If you include just the U.S. then I’m very certain he’s not in the top 995.

It’s awesome that we’re even debating this with guys like Bauber on the forum. Yeah, the guy weighing a buck sixty is bragging about looking better than 99% of the population. Awesome, just awesome.

james

ryan: I’m stronger than 99% of the population!

james: LOL, I’m choosing to define population as my house yesterday afternoon when I had the Lilliebridges, Stan Efferding, Bene Magnusson, Eric Spoto, Konstantinovs, and Dan Green over for dinner. You were miles away from the top 1%!
atypical1 wrote:

Well that’s another point I’d like to make. It’s not a game of “top 1%”. So little of the Earth’s population even lifts that it’s a game of fractions. Bauber would be like top .000001% lol!

Yeah, I’m a stats guy too (it’s what I do for a living). It’s very academic of you to say that you default to the world population but most reasonable people don’t include the entire world when they make claims like that.

It’s also an impossible statistic to back up so it sounds good but it’s totally unrealistic and unsubstantiated. Let’s say he did mean the entire world. The assumption is that if you don’t watch your diet and you don’t go to Golds gym that you can’t be lean and look good. But that’s far from true and we can all see examples of that everyday just by walking around.

He didn’t say anything at all about being stronger and more physically capable. He said “I look better than 99% of the population”. That’s an even bigger claim to make and one for sure that’s impossible to verify. It sure sounds good though.

james

Ryan’s avi isn’t recent at all, he’s big now.

At 99%, 70 million people, world-wide, could still look better/be stronger than him. That’s entirely possible. Nearly twice the population of California of people who look better than him.

First off, exclude (almost) all children (ever see that body building child from Romania, or wherever? Freaky). Exclude all people aged 50+ ('cept George Clooney, amIrite people?). Exclude the deformed, the diseased, albinos (no hate), the crippled, the invalid, the malnourished, the obese, the anorexic, the little people (no hate at all, I love you Peter Dinklage), the siamese twins, the bearded ladies, the alopecia-stricken, the hirsuit, the be-warted, the tree man, the acne-prone, the insanely-high muscle insertion people, professional eating contestants, “man or woman” contestants on Maury Povich, crossdressers while we’re at it, skinnyfats, the chubbies, ultramarathoners, facial tattoo people…

Look, why rag on the guy? He’s probably right, and even if he isn’t, it’s all subjective anyway.
