I’m trying to hit the sweet spot of hitting depth but not wasting energy on over doing it. We tend to get people in the chairs who are very demanding on depth. I’ve been trying to dial it in for years and still struggle with finding the right spot consistently. It isn’t a flexibility issue either. I can squat with my butt on my heels but that’s a waste in a meet.
No question!!! I feel your pain on that one…

It is so rare to hear someone actually talk truthfully about depth, and how deep you should go. this made my day
I don’t know about anyone else but when I compete, it’s to win so there’s no point throwing away pounds on unnecessary depth.
Has anyone else noticed that the people who usually harp longest and loudest on things like form and depth are the ones that don’t compete or are weak? Very often they are also the Youtube warriors or some of the people who post on this site who always ensure that everyone knows they squat ATG and with good form.
Yesterday I came across a video from a couple of years ago of one of our female lifters at a strength competition in which she pulled 365 with a belt on a trap bar. One of the more retarded comments was something to the effect of “I’d like to see if she could even pull half that on a straight bar without a belt”. People find a way to excuse their own weakness by picking at weird shit like that.
Anywho, my rant is over…for now.
Srsly? I hate the trap bar, I think its harder.
Saturday July 9
Bench
bar-10
95-3
115-2
115-3 sling shot
135-5
155-4
160-1 these all felt heavy and awkward
135-3x5
140-5
150-4
That’s it. Just a bunch of bench
How do you like the slingshot?
It’s probably going to in handy when i get to start benching again.

I really like it and it’s been useful in simulating a shirt without having to get into a shirt and the pain of wearing a shirt. It isn’t completely the same but close enough to work heavier sets. Mine isn’t really a slingshot. It’s a copy I made for myself and BB with a couple of old sets of wraps.
He’s used his a lot and believes it’s pushed his bench up without the strain on his shoulders. He’s had issue with them in the past but they are mostly exacerbated with squatting.
Sunday July 10
Lots of dead lifts
135-2x5
185-3
225-2x3
245-2
265-1 (weird PR in that it’s the most I’ve pulled without a belt)
285-1 belt
245-13 (ish) touch and go fast reps with the belt. Some at the beginning aren’t locked out. I lost my grip on 13
225-16 also touch and go with first couple reps barely up before I bounced it off the floor again ![]()
This was a lot of pissing around. I videod a lot of it for Snapper so she could see my raw sumo pull. I missed getting the 285 except for the final lock out. My camera man had some issues. We did however, get a couple of minutes of me saying “what? what?” when I couldn’t hear him over our big fan.
You can see my set up is high and the more fatigued I get, the more I stiff leg it. It’s easier for me to pull sumo in a suit because you have the natural pop off the floor and the shorter lock out plus I tend to sit back more in a suit. Raw, I think I do better conventional.
Deficit deads - we used quarters instead of 45’s so the bar was low. I had a super wide set up with my feet almost at the plates and focused on pushing my feet out.
145-5
165-5
185-5
205-5
225-3 At this point it was all back so I just packed it in.
DB overhead tricep extension
42-3x10
52-7
BB stood behind me and stabilised me to make it a bit easier to focus on what I was doing and not falling backwards. I tried to do the same for him but his back and shoulders looked so good all my stabilizing was inappropriate and not much help.
Hanging leg raises
3x10
Really great pulling Julie. Its easy to see that training together has been good for you.
Great training session.
the touch and go reps had allot of speed.
and BB is indeed stud-big numbers at 165 sounds like a good coach too.
Thank you for that.
You do have a rather high hip position, but you keep your back nice and tight. I suspect if I film my sumos from the side I would see that my back is doing most of the work. Like I said in my log, I gotta go back and start from scratch with help from someone who’s a sumo expert. I have a couple of local options.
I did try to pull sumo with an old squat suit on and had the most difficult time keeping my balance.
That video just makes me want to go to the gym and deadlift.
Very nice pulling.

Thanks Ddot. It was kind of vomitous but for some reason I love pulling shit for high reps when I’m not getting ready for a meet.
I already got my stupid comment. Apparently my deadlift would be helped by using hooks and not using a belt.

Using hooks?
Like Captain Hook? ![]()
And don’t you know that belts make your back weaker… c’mon!!

Now that I think about it, hooks would be pretty bad ass and a peg leg. We have a cockatiel. I could pretend he’s my parrot and put him on my shoulder when I pull. Awesome deadlifting pirate.
Pirate lifting FTW!
Out of curiousity what do you get out of the high rep touch and go sets? I like them too but am always curious about why other people do them and especially if they are competitors.

Mostly I get to feel like a bad ass. I like them for pure back and posterior chain building. I don’t do them all the time and wouldn’t do them once I cycle up for a meet. For the most part its a fun, pissing contest kind of game. I feel like I spend so much time cycling up for a meet and it’s very structured and kind of boring so when I’m not I like to play around with things I find a bit more fun.
wow that was awesome to watch! I can relate to the high hip thing.
Reping FTW that looked bad ass.
Im with ddot i want to do that now!
I very much like your setup. The only way I can stop my hips from coming up first is…you guessed it…to set up higher in the first place. I don’t know if that’s “bad” but that is my only workable solution right now.
Love your arms and shoulders. Distracted me from the fine pulling.
BTW, if you don’t want the bozo comments on youtube, set your videos to “unlisted” which means that only folks with the link (like the readers here) can see the video. That is what I do.

Haha…yeah, that’s why I like them too. Nothing makes you feel like a bad ass quite like high rep deads. It’s nice when training is fun isn’t it? I’ve spent a lot of my life training for things without having fun. I wish I had cracked that code earlier.
Keep up the solid work.

Thank you for mentioning my arms and shoulders. I was pointing out to BB that they were looking mighty good in that video. It may have been the lighting but still ![]()
I’ve always done better with a bit of a higher set up. I don’t know why but it’s worked well for me so I don’t think I’ll be changing it. It don’t see the point of being lower.
