Really? This surprises me a bit.
Which part? The being light or not competitive? I am fairly competitive but not as much as if I got heavier. At nationals there were open lifters that beat me on total but I beat them on wilks. Bottom line is the total though right?
I meant the competitive part. Not the light part. I usually weigh in smack-dab in the middle of the weight class. But I’m sitting at the top right now. Want to stay put. I’m ridiculously competitive, but mostly with myself.
Could you vid your sumo pulling for me when you get a chance? Some reps from the side and from the front? I’ve gotta make the switch and would love to analyze your form since you’re so successful and have [relatively] long limbs like me.

I’ll try to remember on the weekend. My raw sumo isn’t that great. I’ve been pulling raw conventional because it’s a totally different feel raw v. geared.
That’s all. Just a bunch of light squatting. I alternated wide/narrow stance so it felt very different. The last set was super wide and I can still feel my ham strings squawking.

Yes he is. Particularly since his weight sits around 165. I videoed his squats too and his look much nicer than mine. He is much more upright and a lot faster out of the hole. They just look a lot tighter. I’m not sure how much of that is body mechanics since he is shorter legged with a longer torso and how much is that he is just better than me.
At first glance I wasn’t thrilled with my depth but when I did the slo-mo thing, they were all good. I think I need to push it deeper though.
Yeah, I’ve reintroduced the clogs to squatting and leave the chucks for pulling only. I feel more secure and stable in the O shoes.
Also he was kind enough to prepare our post workout nutrition in the form of shakes made of vanilla ice cream, milk, Baileys and raw eggs thrown in to make it legit. I recommend it.

I agree 0…I thought you nailed the depth on 1st rep, #2 eh and #3 right on, that coming from an IPF point of view and not knowing who will be sitting in the chairs. 2 of my last 3 meets were something international blah blah blah, NAPF, or IPF, or alphabet soup something. As you know they don’t don’t screw around with depth. Good thing is you have a lot of time to dial things in and in reality the 3 reps at the meet are the ones that count. Looking strong though…awesome.

I’m trying to hit the sweet spot of hitting depth but not wasting energy on over doing it. We tend to get people in the chairs who are very demanding on depth. I’ve been trying to dial it in for years and still struggle with finding the right spot consistently. It isn’t a flexibility issue either. I can squat with my butt on my heels but that’s a waste in a meet.

No question!!! I feel your pain on that one…
It is so rare to hear someone actually talk truthfully about depth, and how deep you should go. this made my day

It’s true. It’s a waste of effort and throws away pounds to go one inch deeper than necessary for powerlifting purposes. I’ve finally figured that out. After, like, five meets.
That being said, I love the aesthetic of deep squatting. I don’t know why.

I don’t know about anyone else but when I compete, it’s to win so there’s no point throwing away pounds on unnecessary depth.
Has anyone else noticed that the people who usually harp longest and loudest on things like form and depth are the ones that don’t compete or are weak? Very often they are also the Youtube warriors or some of the people who post on this site who always ensure that everyone knows they squat ATG and with good form.
Yesterday I came across a video from a couple of years ago of one of our female lifters at a strength competition in which she pulled 365 with a belt on a trap bar. One of the more retarded comments was something to the effect of “I’d like to see if she could even pull half that on a straight bar without a belt”. People find a way to excuse their own weakness by picking at weird shit like that.
