She’s a contortionist.
Some of the Chinese women have mastered the arch and a wide grip. With their short limbs, their bench stroke is only a few inches.

BB was talking about that last night; the Asian women and their sick arches. He thinks that may be why the IPF modified the bench rule so that a certain percentage of your butt has to be on the bench. In addition, we have to have our feet flat on the floor. I think I could get a pretty big arch (not quite like this one though) if I could bring my legs farther back but I don’t think many people have the ankle mobility to do it with feet flat on the floor.
To the poster above, I’m not sure when it becomes rediculous. If you can do it within the guidelines set by your federation, is it rediculous? It stands out because it is so far beyond what most people can do. Meh, I don’t know. It certainly looks odd to me but I’m always trying to improve my own arch so maybe I’m jealous
To my eyes, it falls outside what I believe is the spirit of the sport and what is intended but ‘spirit’ becomes a grey area.

I also think that is why they changed the rule regarding the bar can not touch below sternum a few years back…that video was crazy…
damn.
There has been talk in the IPF about ways to eliminate the exaggerated arch, such as being required to take your own liftoff (impossible to do in a contorted position). But, of course, that requirement would really screw with any shirted benchers.
Do they red-light “belly benching?” I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that call.
The spirit of the sport. Now that could fill a thread very, very quickly.

Yes they do red light belly benching. I’ve seen it a couple of times although I wouldn’t call it belly benching as much as touching low.
It would suck if they eliminated hand offs. I find it tough to stay tight in my upper back if I have to do my own lift off.
USAPL/IPF really just wants to make PL no fun, that’s for sure:) I glanced at the newest rule book and it has changed so much in just the 4 years or so since I looked at it last.
Thursday June 2
Squat
bar-10
115-5
155-3
195-1
I wasn’t sure how things would go because I developed a pulling in my left hamstring
235-3 straps down
265-1 straps up
285-1 "
315-4x1 "
They all went really well and I felt unaccountably strong today. I think one of the reasons is that I changed to squatting in my Olympic shoes. I haven’t squatted heavy, equipped in them in a couple of years, having preferred chucks. However, when I squatted raw earlier in the week, I had them on and they felt a lot more stable. My walk outs were more solid and strong. I hit depth easily with room to spare and they all came up fast like I had a rocket up my ass. I think I got more speed because I felt more solid on my feet. Maybe I was just having a good day. Whatever. The meet is in a couple of weeks.
Bench
bar-10
65-5
95-3
105-3x8
SLDL
135-5
155-5
175-5
195-5
215-5
We are going to a meet on Saturday to hang out, help and watch some friends lift. We’ll also be writing our ref’s test. I’ve been studying for a couple of weeks. I can’t remember if I’ve mentioned it or not but I’ve been immersed in the minutiae of IPF rules. We can now rhyme off the measurements of just about every piece of equipment and gear.
It should be fun. The meets a big barbecue and party and we’ll be writing the test with everyone around us drinking. It should lubricate our thought processes
I am pretty serious about doing well.
Awesome training
great squats.
sounds like the meet is going to be fun
good luck on the referees test.
as for crazy rules and people pushing the envelope
olympic wrestling and Judo have been crushed with rule changes,
judo more so.
while never a dirty player or competitor
I am all for competing the best you can
I have to both admire that video and also give it a bit of WTF for legitimacy
Awesome that you are doing the test. very cool (and I do respect IPF immensely despite some of my occasional snarky comments). good lifting too.
I am about to break all the rules and explore squatting in something other than Chuck’s. Just don’t feel they are the be all, end all of squatting shoes.

I believe athletes will always try to win. Billy on Outlawpowerlifting posts repeatedly that there really is no such thing as cheating, only getting caught. I agree, to a certain extent. Everyone always looks for a better advantage…

What do you think you’ll try? I started out in Olympic shoes and let them go by the wayside for a while. Although I used them for benching. The heel lets me get my legs back farther and keep my feet ‘flat’.
I started paying attention to what everyone else was wearing and BB pointed out that most of the bigger IPF squatters were wearing Olympic shoes. I particularly noticed it with Canadian women. This isn’t to say that Canadian women are the defining voice on foot apparel for squatting it’s just that they’re the ones I watch not being as focused on the men or having as much access to watching other women.
Canadian woman are the defining voice of power footwear
while not in your realms I am going back to Olift shoes,
chuck recently have given me some pain
in my foot ankle and knee which I never had before.
as for cheating- when I played
came as close to cheating as I could
I cut as much weight as possible, which when you weigh 130lbs can be allot
stalled , forced fouls, roughed and did everything I could short of ‘fighting dirty’
all within the rules but not quite cricket
I think someone said if you got three whites you squatted too high
olly shoes…hmmm.
might have to look into that.
best of luck on your referee test ![]()

Canadian women are the defining voice of a lot of stuff; like plaid shirts and beer.
I’d like to hear how you end up making out with the O shoes. I’ll be wearing mine to squat in the Toronto meet. I may switch back for worlds. Who knows.
Yesterday we got up at 4:45 and went to the Belle River open (3 hour drive). We lift about 6 that evening. I ended up running the computer and BB was tasked with taking a bunch of pictures for the website.
It’s the third year that I’ve been at that meet and it’s been a blast every time. The meet is inside but the socializing is outside around the beer and barbecue. It’s kind of ‘our place’ since that’s where we first had the birds and butterflies show up for us. We were joking that we would get married at his meet next June but he’ll have to get more beer for the guests.
It’s a pretty relaxed meet and usually has a lot of first time lifters and this year was no exception. One guy showed up with a muliply velcro squat suit and tried to submit his attempts in lbs. However, after his initial confusion, he did pretty well and was pretty calm and chill about the hiccups. I was pretty impressed with how laid back he was. I guess I’m pretty highly strung.
I’m still waiting to hear my results on the ref test. I took it at the end of the day and had finally cracked open a pop so the end of my test has a couple of smiley faces.
Sunday June 5
Deadlift
135-5
225-3
275-2
315-1,1,2,2 straps up
315-2 finally put my belt on
Skull crushers
40-3x10
That’s it for today. We went for a walk and saw a bunch of deer in the field near my house.
What day are you lifting at the Toronto meet? I think I may head down there to check stuff out. It’d be good/cool to touch base again.

I’ll be lifting on Saturday June 18 and lifting starts at 11. It would be great to see you again. Plus I think the entire show should be a lot of fun. I plan on spending time checking everything else out.
We both passed the written portion of our ref’s test. I missed a couple that I should have gotten. They were worded oddly or I had too much beer. Regardless, we passed.
I would highly recommend doing this for anyone. Not necessarily to ref but to get a very thorough understanding of the rules. I learned quite a few things that I was not aware of.
