Yesterday was BB’s birthday and I got him a set of Olympic plate sized DB handles. I got a great deal on them because they misquoted the price over the phone and they ended up honouring the phone price. In addition, I’m sure they thought I was a loon because I wanted to try them out in the store on one of their benches and for a bit of rowing. They are quite a bit longer than standard DB handles and I wanted to make sure they weren’t going to be too long. By the time I was finished I think they would have given them to me free just to get me the hell out.

Tell him happy birthday for me!

I have a pair of those DBs. They work pretty good. I find they also are great for activating your nervous system, how’s how to use them as a neural activation method:

Step 1 - Load them for flat DB presses (also known as the RL neural activation press)
Step 2 - Do the first set as usual
Step 3 - Place the weights to the floor in a normal manner
Step 4 - Don’t re-adjust the collars
Step 5 - Start next set
Step 6 - Explosively move head to the side to dodge falling plates
Steps 7-10 - curse and pick up plates after they’ve chipped your floor and plates

For normal DB presses, do the above but readjust the collars prior to each set.

Since you’ve mentioned this, I’ll bear it in mind now. I guess I didn’t give it all that much thought. Do you find the handles are smaller than the diameter of a regular bar? They seem skinny to me.

Anyway, I’ve developed my own means to keep my CNS jumping like dumping a bar on the back of my head.

Were you thinking of checking out the Toronto meet?

Friday May 27
Squat
bar-10
115-5
155-3
195-1
235-3 straps down
265-1 straps up
280-1 "
310-1 "
330-0
315-0
These sucked. 315 was the worst. I just kind of hit the hole and stayed down there. We had too much dinner and I was thirsty and kept drinking. My belt got tighter and tighter and I couldn’t take a breath so I was pretty soft. I loosened my belt to the big girl setting and it was much better.
315-3x1

Bench
bar-10
65-3
95-3
105-5x3

BB seated OHP
bar-some
65-10
70-2x6

Bent over DB row
52-3x10

3 Weeks till the Toronto meet.

Do you find that you have to change your belt setting for raw vs. geared? My belt was too damn tight when I was maxing in the suit. Caused a bit of claustrophobia and a pregnant look since there was nowhere for the skin/fat to go.

Are you competing? I thought your next meet was Worlds?

I definately have to change if when I gear up. I also changes based on straps down or up. It also changes if I drink a crap ton of water because I feel like I’m dehydrating. That’s one of the drawbacks of a lever.

I had so much water training yesterday that I looked 6 months pregnant by the time we were done. My stomach made water gurgle squishy sounds when I moved.

I decided to do a meet in June. It’s in Toronto at the Convention Centre. It will have a similar layout as the Arnold in that there will be body building, figure, fitness, strongman etc in addition to powerlifting. It’s the first time we’ve had a combined event like this so it should be interesting. Theres a write up at: ontariopowerlifting.org.

That’s the nice thing about running the website. I can put up a crap load of pictures of myself

I have to change it up soon and put in different pictures. I try to keep the male/female split equal. For a long time it felt like the women in the sport were treated like second class citizens. I’m trying to even things out a bit a least from a media perspective. Okay, I’ll hop off my soap box now.

I try to keep things fresh and current on the site. Traffic has been going steadily up. Hopefully at some point it can be a revenue generator for advertising.

That should be a fun meet. I have witnessed the Arnold and what a gathering of people who have a ton in common and are so different all at the same time. If you are a people watcher type person you’ll be in heaven.

I’m definately a people watcher. It’s going to seem weird to lift in that type of environment as opposed to what we’re used to. To be honest I’m more nervous about that than Worlds right now since World’s is at a venue of lifted at 3 times already.

Sunday May 29

DL
135-5
225-3
275-2
295-5x2 Some sets with belt on some off. I felt like crap today but strangely felt strong training. I didn’t do a ton. The meets in less than three weeks so I resisted the urge and just left it at the planned weight.

Deficits with suit bottoms - no belt
185-5
235-5
255-5

DB Tricep extensions
32-10
42-10
52-9

Staying disciplined is the way to go. You got your attempts planned out yet?

Yeah. I’ll probably go with the same as the last meet and hope I actually get more in.

Squat 127.5 (281), 140 (308), 150(330)
Bench 72.5 (160), 77.5 (170), 80-82.5 (175-180ish)
DL 152.5 (335), 165 (365), 170-175 (375-385)

We’ll see how it goes. I’ve been a bit flat for a while but I think I’m snapping out of it. How about you?

Monday May 30

Bench
bar-10
65-5
95-3
115-2
135-3 shirt
160-1 signals
170-1 signals
182.5-3x0 The first was close to finishing but then we pulled my shirt down and the second almost dumped in my teeth and the third went to my belly. I called it.
If I can get 182.5, that would put me at 82.5Kg. We’ll see. The first two were easy peasy.

DB bench
42-3x10

Squat
bar-5
135-3
155-3
185-4x3, 5

For a funny story, last week BB was in the grocery store waiting in line. He was wearing an old meet t-shirt. There was an old lady in line behind him who noticed the shirt and asked if he was a weight lifter. “Yes I am” he says. “Will you open my bottle of water” she askes. He’s like a powerlifting super hero.

I’m still not feeling it. It will pass.

For me it doesn’t really have to do with training or the meet. I’m feeling pretty strong in the gym right now. I’m just feeling generally under the weather with lower back pain that has been getting worse and making me feel short tempered. I’m pretty sure my problem is hormone related but I’m not sure about yours

Wow, I’m pretty speechless. At what point does an arch become borderline ridiculous?
