So, I’m about to embark on my journey as a “competitive” power-lifter. I’m extremely nervous but I guess that’s par for the course. I know I will place close to last but it’s the experience that counts, right?
Here’s a question. I’ve been following Jim’s beyond 5-3-1 plan for a few months and I have nothing but plaudits for it. I have employed a coach for two sessions recently and he has given me a “six week to comp” plan. It’s very different to Jim’s methods i.e it uses RPE instead of percentages and it has me doing BP/DL/SQ all in the same session three days a week.
I’m not sure what to do for the best, stick to the tried and tested or use my coaches recommendation?
You’d paid for a coach - it would seem silly not to follow his advice. Next time, make sure you hire someone that you trust (you wouldn’t be asking this if you trusted him) and is willing to work with your current training regime. Or at least follow his for the entire cycle.
Also, I want to punch you in the mouth for this statement: " I know I will place close to last but it’s the experience that counts, right?" You will get nowhere with this attitude.

I paid for 2 x 1 hour sessions mainly to look over my form for the 3 lifts to see if there was any way I could improve. I wasn’t expecting to be given “6 weeks to comp” plan. It’s a generic plan that he is using to launch his website, so it’s not bespoke to me. There are no trust issues, I have the up-most respect for this guy for several reasons.
I’m just being a realist Jim. My total according to what I have done in the gym is around the 440kg / 970lb mark. Looking at last years comp the people in my class averaged over 520kg ll26lb and the lowest total was 430kg. I’m not going to kid myself and say I’m going to lift over 550kg. What I will do is bust my a$$ to get the best total possible. It’s not about what I place it’s about my numbers and hitting PR’s. This is a personal quest for me and I will do what it take to be the best I can be.
I think you can get the wrong impression about someone from reading a forum post. If you knew me I can guarantee you wouldn’t want to “punch me in the mouth”.

You asked my opinion, I gave it to you. Good luck!

I appreciated Jim’s punch in the mouth comment.
I’m gearing up for a job interview and thought to myself “prob out of my league but at least I get the interview experience.”
thats not the attitude I should have.
I like how Jims advice on strength can be applied to other pursuits.
A job interview is subjective. A PL meet is cold hard facts/numbers. As much as I can appreciate a positive mental attitude helps athletic performance, being delusional won’t.
No one will be trying harder than me to gain the best total possible, trust me on that one!
My personal reason for training is to become less of a pussy mentally. I believe it’s carrying over everywhere.
Hope you crush your goals in your meet.
Congrats on the job. Training, once you get to a certain point in your life, is much more than numbers or posting selfies on Instagram. And as you have found out can make a difference in other areas of your life. Strong mind, strong body: Through Challenges
