Wow, that’s fantastic! It makes all the hours, days, weeks, and months spent eking out just another rep, just another pound on the bar, just another round of conditioning all worthwhile. Great to see you put yourself out there, and really show up big! Congrats.

Thanks Sir I really appreciate it. I (just like you) am out there just trying to change peoples views on what you can do when you aren’t 20 anymore. I had a funny moment at the comp yesterday that I know you will appreciate. At the comp there was a teen class, with 4 kids from kids from 13 to 15 competing. It was so good to see them and know the work they are already putting in. One young man (mid 20’s) standing next to me who is a competitor himself but wasn’t competing on the day, just there to support someone from his gym. He turns to his mate and says how good it is to see the kids doing the sport and how he wishes he had done it as a teen and not started in his early 20’s. I had to laugh and turned to him and say, "try starting this stuff when you are in your late 40’s. He had a good laugh and said ā€˜fair point’.

Monday 28th August - post comp week.

Doing a 2 week pivot block with some different movements in it to give the body a break.

SSB squat
Bar x 10
60 x 5
80 x 8 x 3 sets

Leg ext
40 x 12 x 3 sets

DB Inc bench press
25 x 10 x 3 sets
These felt surprisingly awkward. Haven’t done incline for so long. Good pump

Cable row
50 x 12 x 3 sets
Old school machine and the movement is so smooth. Great back pump with light weight.

Absolutely crushed it! Loved seeing you completely manhandle the farmers and then blitz with the keg. All the work really shined through.

Really appreciate it mate. My training runs on farmers have all been really smooth but that combination of me rushing and the uneven ground really made it very rocky. In the end I won the farmers and keg carry event by 2 tenths of a second with just pure brute old man force.

Echoing the long list of congrats, super result and a great example to your lad too mate. Well done!

Thanks buddy. He had a great day watching the comp and playing in the boxing ring with a bunch of other kids. It’s so important to me that he sees training and competing as part of normal behavior. He still loves his karate and is progressing well but hopefully wont be too long before he ca train with me too. There were kids competing as young as 13 and it really opened yup his eyes to this being accessible for kids too.

Strongman comp done so it is time to get back on the burpee train and lose a couple of kilos.

100 burpees - took around 15 mins and I was blowing hard. Body still sore from the comp so this was a great way to move some blood around.

It funny to realize that we naturally get stronger as we age. I tell thr youngins getting into powerlifting thay what you see on youtube are guys who have been training 5+ years so dont worry about it.

I know a few people on here prefer to train at home and some of you have had interesting experiences at commercial gyms but I wanted to add some light to the shade.

My gym is simply outstanding. It is such a positive place to train where people of all ages, genders backgrounds come to just do their work. When I went to the gym on Monday, one of the owners knew I had competed on the weekend and asked me about it. He was super happy to hear I had won and asked me to sent him the videos / photos so he could load it onto the gym IG page.
Last night when I wen to the gym I had a bunch of guys n gals congratulate me and want to know more about the comp. It was a very humbling and positive experience.

I am doing some different movements for the next 2 weeks as part of a pivot / recovery block, last night I was doing SSB Good mornings. Nothing too weird about that. One of the trainers comments that he doesn’t usually see me doing those (clearly shows how much attention they pay to what people are doing in the gym) and then asks me if I have used the good morning machine. I tell him No, I didn’t even know there was one. He asks me if I have a minute and then proceeds to show me the machine, show me how to set it up and use it. It is a great piece of kit and something I have looked at previously and had no idea what it was. It mimicks the movement but the loading is far less on the lower back than using a bar. Now I have an option to use this machine an accessory, and without the time and generosity of the trainer I wouldn’t even know it existed.

Some gyms really are great places to train, you just have to find the right one.

I love a well sorted public gym. The gym I was at last, closed up and merged with another very large gym. Only reason I quit. Went from training with between 6 and 20 people depending on time, to 40-100 people lol. Most of whom are not lifters.

Strong 247 was amazing for that few years I was involved. Even helped build its last two locations, took care of council etc. The vibe was good. Things got a bit crazy and aggressive nearing Big comps, and I loved it. Think Westside style arguments and banter haha. But without the drugs.

There would be an argument or a push and shove in that final few peak weeks, then we’d go eat burgers and laugh about it. :joy:

Nothing beats that kind of environment. The Garage comes second for sure.

I absolutely love my gym. It’s a CrossFit specific gym but really aligns with your experience: great community, diverse ages and levels, knowledgeable coaches, and cool regulars. I feel very fortunate to have found this place and have never had as much fun training as I am having now. From a purely financial perspective I could save money and train alone in my garage, but I never regret the money I spend to be a member and in fact get satisfaction from supporting the gym and owner. Glad to hear others, even on other continents, have found similar experiences at their gym.

Agreed, not got a huge amount of love for them despite owning one, thought I did before I bought it, then remembered I hate being out of breath and sweating.
