Simo - The Red Shoe Diaries (Part 1)

As someone who squatted through knee pain for years – using Aleve and Advil as pre-workout “supplements” – I’ll tell you what I wish someone had told me: It might be time to stop squatting for a while or at least until you can determine the underlying cause of your pain.

I did one podcast with Joe back in Feb which was more focused on the burpee journey and back story. This was the second one which was about super squats. I wouldn’t say I am doing podcasts now, I am just a willing guest on Joes podcast.

If you are really bored this is the first one

They are not getting worse, if anything they were slightly better but I just didn’t want to push them. Deload next week so may rest then completely.

Thanks Pwn that means a lot. Wouldn’t have gone through all that without your example and counsel, so the shout outs were more than deserved.

Pretty sure the cause is just too much squatting. I will sort it. Thanks for the advice, it certainly isn’t something I want to have for years.

Did some more sandbag and burpees today. Sandbag to shoulder with 80kg (176lbs) followed by 10 burpees. Did 10 rounds of this in just under 30 mins. Was seeing stars a few times but managed to stay on my feet.

That sounds freaking disgusting. Good job

I often think this with my knees haha.
Then I see Ivan Durjic on the YouTube’s squatting everyday for the last 960+ days and think “is it really the act of squatting, or is there something else we need to supplement with it”.

Right now it isn’t just knees it is hips also. They are much better than they were at the end of super squats but just not back to 100%. 3 weeks ago just bending my legs to do a burpee or even sleep in the wrong position was sore. Today I didn’t really notice them through the 100 burpees.
A deload week and then maybe a block with leg press in like we did in Jan 2021 after my Tassie holiday.

That sandbag to shoulder with burpee session is brutal for me. My body is sore in places where I didn’t know I had places. Just shows me I need to do more of that awkward lifting stuff.

Apparently squats make your calves grow!! I haven’t trained my calves in over 17 years but I think they still look ok.

Calves are still sore as fk from those sand bag cleans on Saturday. I spend Sunday morning at the indoor pool with the kids, which meant I was carrying the tubes up the stairs for the kids to go down the slides for 2 hours. Legs were shakey by the end and it ended up being good active recovery after the sandbag work.

Calve envy here. Mine are rubbish. I got bored of training when I realised walking did a better job back in the day lol.

I need to get back to walking 15k a day LOL

Spot on, mine got the best results from running 40km a week for 5 years. But that is a big commitment just for sexy calves. LOL

Didn’t really want to start a new topic so will talk about this here as I know at least a few people read this log.

I have been have increasing issues with snoring. I say snoring rather than sleep apnea because I don’t feel that my breathing is stopping or starting and my wife certainly hasn’t mentioned this as a concern. I have always snored a little, like I guess most people do, and it is always worse when I have a cold, have drunk alcohol or sleep on my back.

I have recently gained a fair bit of weight, well actually I have consistently gained weight since I started back training with weights in 2016. Back then I was a 72kg runner (I am 171 or 5tf 7) and now nearly 6 years later I am 94kg. I was 95.5kg 4 weeks ago after running super squats but lost a little water weight when I finished the program.

During the 6 weeks of running super squats I put on nearly 8kg of weight and my snoring went from an occasional 7 out 10 to a nearly daily 11 (thanks spinal tap).

So I am seeking any advice or tips people have for snoring. I am currently trying a snoring mouth guard, which whilst my wife says it helps, I think that is mostly because I find it so hard to sleep in I am awake half the night. Anyone have success with reducing soring ?

Wife pushes me, I roll onto my side and stop snoring generally.

If I’m dog tired then i’ll still snore somewhat mate (even if on my side).

More body weight defo would add to this issue imo. More mass on your chest = more weight on the lungs.

Tennis ball taped to back of t shirt? Or start a hard cut to bring out more calf definition! Is the intent to stay at current BW? or cut? Health markers all good at this higher BW (post your SS block)?

(You don’t drink (iirc) but that can also increase snoring likelyhood).

No intention to ‘cut’ per se. I have reduced food intake a little purely as a factor if not needing that much food to support my current training. I expect that this will mean reduce weight slowly over the next few weeks - month.

I haven’t had any recent blood work so not sure about health markers, but resting heart rate and blood pressure are both good with no real change.

I read some stuff today that talks about mouth exercises that help with snoring, so I am going to start doing them. The only take a few mins a day and i can do them at my desk at work so I dont have anything to lose.
