Simo - The Red Shoe Diaries (Part 1)

So I finished reading Never let go - Dan John and moved onto The Purposeful Primitive - Marty Gallagher. There are both great reads, out of the two I would say I like the Dan John book a little better. I really liked the first half of PP with the history / stories of the primitive athletes but the second half of the book was less enjoyable for me. I did however like Martys writing style so decided after reading this to buy another on of his books. “Coan the man, the myth, the method”. This was an awesome read, great to learn more about Ed and loved the details and stories for each of his competitions.

Now I need another book… hmmm

The Ed Coan book is great also. I’d forgotten about that one.

Friday 1 July - week 3
Squat
Bar x 10
70 x 5
90 x 3
Sleeves
110 x 2
Belt
130 x 2 - these were pretty painful at the knees
140 x 3 x 3 sets (308 lbs)
This should have been 4 sets of 5 but Knees were so sore cut this to 3 sets of 3. Not happy but it was the right thing to do.

OH press
65 x 6 x 3 sets (143 lbs)
Happy with these tonight

RDL
117.5 x 8 x 2 sets (259 lbs)
117.5 x 8+. I got 15 reps on this set.
Did the first set doh without straps but grip wasn’t good. Used straps for the next two sets.

Pull ups
3 sets of 7

Other than my old man knees every thing else was solid.

For todays conditioning session I decided to give the Grace WOD a go using my plastic barrel. First go at this so took it at a steady pace. Still puffing hard by the end and upper body pump was great.

Got it done in 14 mins so wasn’t breaking any records. Although given I am probably the only person to do it with a plastic sand filled barrel then I guess it is a record :joy:

Didn’t do any training on Sunday. It was my middle daughters birthday a week ago and Sunday we took her and some friends Ice Skating for her birthday. I decided that doing a little skating would serve as my cardio for the say. I haven’t skated for 8 years and I don’t remember it being as hard as it was. I managed to stay upright the whole time despite having to hold various kids hands and help them around but it was hard work. This was all whilst having to wear what I can only describe as torture implements on my feet. I must have tried 3 different pairs of skates before coming to the realization that they dont make slates for people who have flippers for feet. The only positive was the pain in my feet was so bad it made me forget about the pain in my knees and hips. The kids all had a great time which was the important bit, so it was a good day.

I forget if you’ve already done Complete Keys to Progress or Powerlifting Basics Texas Style, but if not: fantastic reads.

Thanks Pwn I knew you would have something to recommend. I have read the texas book after your previous recommendation and loved it. I have not read the Complete Keys to Progress and at only $11 on kindle it will now be my next purchase.

Oh my god you’re in for such a treat! I’m excited for you.

It is funny @T3hPwnisher, I have trained and followed bodybuilding and strength sports for decades now but have never really read many books relating to this subject (magazines with pictures and books I bought to follow the program like 531 dont count). I wouldn’t describe myself as an avid reader but there are times when I read a lot. I tend to read mostly fiction and for some reason it never occurred to me to read books on training or strength sports. I am really enjoying reading about training right now and learning things I should have read about 20 years ago.

Monday 4th July - week 4
Deadlift
Bar x 10
70 x 5
110 x 3
Mixed grip
140 x 2
Belt
160 x 1
175 x 4 x 3 sets RPE 7, 7, 7

Legs and knees still hate me a lot. Happy with these though. They felt tough but looked like they moved ok.

Stated getting a cold on Sunday and felt pretty crap all day today. Took some pre workout tonight just to get the caffeine hit. Just did the deadlift and then went home.
