Simo - The Red Shoe Diaries (Part 1)

The good news is that it will come soon enough. They get older before you know it.

My oldest has his 18th birthday today. It goes by too quickly.

Happy birthday to him.
What’s the drinking age over there? Is 18 a big thing for him?

Like 15 or something. So 18 is a big thing, but not as big as it is in most countries.

No “first drink with dad” then. Where you both pretend you believe the kids never drunk before.

All the best for him anyway. Big birthdays in lockdown must suck

Our lockdown is essentially over for the time being. He may yet have a big party with his friends.

People over here have forgotten all about Covid. The “in” thing to do now is riot. Hard to social distance when you join the mob.

Well, and Covid numbers are now spiking becuase of Memorial Day. The next few weeks might start getting really bad over there in the hospitals.

We’ll see. I never thought it was that serious. If you’re healthy then it seems to just be a nuisance. Perhaps people should take that as a clue and stop being morbidly obese.

Good and bad news today:

Good: Got an email saying the gym Will re open on June 22.
Bad: Because of social distancing restrictions they are limited to the numbers that can be in the gym at one time. This means you have to book 60 or 75 min sessions at specific times.

There is no way I can work with that. I go to the gym on the same days but the time varies based on when I can get out of the house. This is usually dependant in the kids and how they are behaving. Also there is no way I could get my sessions done in 60 mins. Heck when it gets heavier it takes me that long to warm up and just get the squat main sets done.
Hopefully the restrictions will ease further soon and then I can get back.

You could definitely do some kind of lifting in 60-75 minutes, even if it’s not your specific programming, surely.

As for the timing issue, maybe a switch to AM sessions?

It’s not so much the 60 mins, it is the booking a time to be there. Some days I train at 6, or 6:30 or 7:00 or 7:15 or 7:30. It all depends on what the kids are doing.
I used to get up at 4:30 to run every morning but no way I am doing that again to life weights. Lol

I have access to a full home gym set up so there is no need for me to rush back Until it suits me.

How long do your workouts take?

You should try calling when you’re ready.

“Hey, any chance you have a slot open starting in 15 minutes?”

They might.

If the three sessions the squat day is the longest.
If I am working up to a heavy single let’s say at 160, I would do 6 sets to get there (Bar x 10, 70 x 5, 90 x 3, 110 x 1, 130 x 1, 150 x 1) then the top single. Then I have 5 sets of 4.
If I allow 3 mins a set then Warm up And top set can take 20 mins. Then allow 5 mins per set on the down sets and that another 25 mins. So squats alone takes me 45 mins.
On that day I then have 5 sets of bench, 3-5 sets of Bulgarians and 5 sets of close grip bench.
I then may add pull ups and abs at the end.
If for all then other work I allow 3 mins a set (1 min for the set and 2 min rest) that’s 45 mins without abs and pull ups.
So sessions are usually at least 90 mins.

They did give me that option or an option to book two sessions back to back, so they are trying their best to work with me. But the sessions are an hour and then I would have to wait outside the gym for 15 mins And then go back in.

If I called them and turned up half way through a session then I would get 30 mins and then have to go outside for 15 mins and then back in for an hour. If my session goes over 90 which they usually do, then I would get another 15 min wait.

Thursday 18th June week 2

Woke up with a stiff neck this morning and it just got worse and worse through the day. Was totally jammed up by the time I started training. Got it all done but felt crap.

Bench
Bar x 10
70 x 5
90 x 3
105 x 1
115 x 1 - (253 lbs) RPE 9.5 was slow and doubt there was another rep there
100 x 4 x 5 sets (220 lbs) RPE - 9, 9, 9, 9, 9
Moved ok considering my neck was fked.

Squat
Bar x 10
70 x 5
90 x 3
112.5 x 6 x 4 sets RPE 5, 5, 5, 5
Lungs puffing but moved fast enough.

Row
82.5 x 8 x 4 sets
Moved ok

Pull up
5 x 3 sets
SS hanging knee raise
15 x 3 sets
Been a while since I did a pull and boy did it show. These were way harder than they should be.

Body wasn’t real happy about training but I got it done anyway. Nice.

Our approaches are a little different (but not much, now that I think about it), but this is me as well. I take whatever rest I need, and can easily use more than 90 minutes.

It’s my favorite activity, so what else should I be doing with my time?

I superset everything with chatting to mates to work my jaw muscles. Stretches the session out a bit
