Simo - The Red Shoe Diaries (Part 1)

Body knows it is deload week!! Everything hurts !

I’m in a new realm of hurt today. I guess the best way to get back DOMS is to try to pick up something that’s too heavy. I had two and a half cheeseburgers from 1-3 and still never reached “full”.

Yer doms seems to be directly related to how hungry I am. Also when I feel this beat up I also crave bad food choices. Family bbq this arvo which means lots of burgers for me too. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye::joy:

Stick to the protein. That’s my version of damage control because I really just want all the carbs.

Beautiful sunny dad today about 29c I decided to wash the wife’s car. Figured that would get me moving. The lower back pump was intense !! Those deadlifts on Friday took a bit more out of me than I thought. Really glad I didn’t go for an amrap on the last set:sunglasses::joy:

Good to see you back on bench Rob, just be careful right.
I hope you and your coach comes up with something good. Well I know he will.

I’m trying to picture me this.

Monday 24th Feb - deeeeload

Squat
Bar x 10
65 x 5
85 x 3
Sleeves on
105 x 3
122.5 x 4 x 2 sets RPE - 6, 6,
Added wraps
122.5 x 3 - felt odd but not too bad
135 x 3 - felt ok
145 x 1 - felt easy
First wrap was nasty !! Quads still had doms from last week and as the wraps compressed them they burned !! Felt a little odd, realised after 2 reps that I needed to open my knees or hips more. Felt better after that. These were soft wraps so goodness only knows what hard ones feel like. Lmao
After behind my right knee felt a little bruised (not sure if this is right word) tender maybe.

Bench
Bar x 10
65 x 5
82.5 x 8 x 4 - RPE 7, 7, 8, 8
Felt fine, shorter rests

Bulgarians
27.5 x 7 x 3 sets
Was programmed as 9 reps but cut them back because of heavier squat.

Db bench
30 x 7 too easy
32.5 x 7 still pretty easy
37.5 x 7 still easy
37.5 x 7 ok
No pain, no issues, good job.

Bicep isometric holds

Good deload today. Got to play with wraps which was fun. Back of my knees are going to be bruised tomorrow.

Squats looked very good. You’ll get used to the wraps. Mine aren’t super stiff but after some getting used to I definitely prefer to squat in wraps

Whens the date of your comp man?

The only way I get DOMs these days is just to do “something different”, whatever that means. Every time I get out of routine or do things differently, DoMS comes back for the first session or two. After that, I’m golden.

For a first time in wraps that was very tidy. Doesn’t look like they change things much.

Firstly they did hurt ! Not bad but its deff not nice. Behind my right knee is sore today but left is fine.
I felt , they deff give me more rebound than the sleeves which helps drive me through that sticking point just above parallel. They make me push my knees out or separate the floor which is something I have been trying to cue anyway but dont always do it well. Other than that I dont feel they changed my technique too much and they didnt feel hard to use. I went fairly slow with them because it was a first time. Julian (the guy who wrapped and spotted me), seemed to think I could drop in a little quicker as I hit depth and get a bit more rebound.

The sleeves also give me some benefit but not as much as the wraps. At a guess I think they might give me 20kg.

Looks like you’re well suited to wraps. Those are the softer Harris ones, yes? If you want I can send you my red Slingshots to have a go with for a few weeks, I won’t be needing them for a couple of months. They are reasonably stiff but nothing extreme. Failing that, see if you can get a pair of Inzer Grippers to try, they are quite popular. Titan THPs have good reputation as well.

If you can, yes, descend a bit more aggressively into the wraps. It’ll give more rebound.

They were the harris ones and Julian mentioned they were soft. He has a few different ones, as does the other guys who train at my gym, so I’ll check exactly what he has got and maybe try others. I think my decision with regards whether i use them in comp or not is going to be based off whether I can learn to wrap myself effectively or find someone who can do it on comp day.
Thanks for the offer to send yours down, let me see what I have got available to play with down here first. I wouldn’t want you to go to that trouble, if there options locally.

Is it normal for leg to be pretty stiff and sore after first use ? Feels like tendons at the back of right knee are bruised. Left feels fine !!

Yes, knees and legs can feel sore after wraps. You’re moving more weight than you might otherwise and there is significant compression around the joint.

I’d have a crack self-wrapping the soft wraps, then have a go self wrapping stiffer ones. There are a number of ways to make self wrapping a lot easier. The hard part is tying off, and a of long reach pliers effectively eliminates that problem.

Sebastian Oreb has a good wrapping video which you could check out.

I will try that and have a look at the video, thanks. Julian uses the long nose pliers when he self wraps, he kinds wraps over them and then puts then end in and pulls it through. I will have to watch some videos and then ask him if he can give me a self wrap lesson or two.

Yeah, that’s similar to what I do. I just put the pliers over my knee on the second last revolution, so the last revolution goes over them. Then I grab the tail and pull it through.
