Side Bent Presses. (John Davies)

In the Hired Gun Interview Chris Shugart had with John Davies, John mentioned side bent presses. Now I remember seeing a picture of one of these being preformed in a training book of mine. However it was just a “historical” photo. There was no info on how to correctly preform the exercise. TC I think this would make a good “Short topic from the editors” article. Or even better Mr. Davies himself could write how to preform and incorporate it into a training program. I know I don’t ask for much. What kind of name is Shugart anyway? Please change your last name to Shurbert. Thanks dude.

I hope I am able to answer this in verbal form well enough for you. If I could post with pictures but this will have to do. Now first of all, dumbell bent presses are an extraordinary exercise for mass development. It will thicken the torso/shoulder. I would suggest you place it within your shoulder workout but some care needs to be taken as how it works other muscle groupings. Holding dumbell in one hand at shoulder with suppinated grip and other hand on hip. Bend to side with hand on hip while simultaneoulsy pressing and twisting the weight upwards. Maintain total control of weight - no jerking or boucing. Does that help - please let me know if I can help further.

In faith,

Coach Davies

It sounds kinda like a one armed Arnold press with involvement of the torso. Does that sound about right?

Coach Davies, good explaination. It actually sounds easier that I first imagined. A picture will be helpful in the future. I’ll have to give this a try soon! Coach Davies, it’s great to see you posting on the forum. We truly appreciate your expertise. And I know many of us look forward to your upcoming articles in T-mag. I also hope you will write many more books in the near future! Thanks again.

You are absolutely right with the torso concept. You get real, real thick. A lot of my athletes who do this for an extending time find that people radically underestimate their weight. I had one athlete a great player, 10+ years in the NFL, who mostly played at the 285 mark, before we met. He started to utilize this lift along with all the other functional work and hello 300. I guess I better throw some pictures in with a future article. Nate - you’re embarrassing the old coach - have fun on the holidays.

In faith,

Coach Davies
