So last night at rugby practice a guy ran into me and my shoulder poped and it hurt pretty bad. THen kind of felt weak, and now today it hurts to move it around. I can but it hurts. The same thing happened to my left shoulder a few years ago when i was in a car accident, i was holding the wheel and upon impact my shoulder lodged back and i had pain for a few days after. My shoulder would hurt when i would lifte from then on. Now im worried the same thing is going to happen to this one.
When i went to PT for the left shoulder the said i have unstable shoulders…after last night i did some research and i found i have Shoulder Subluxation. I remeber when i was younger i could slip my shoulders out when ever i wanted to. Anyways my quesiton is what to do i do? I do rotator cuff exercises every week. Internal and External rotations, band pull aparts, face pulls. Thats my warm up…needless to say im fucking pissed!
If your pain persists you should stop lifting, do not work through the pain and go see a shoulder specialist who can properly diagnose your injury.Let him refer you to a good Physical Therapist who can the work together to put a proper rehab plan together to treat your injury. Don’t just take any advice because you could do more damage that good despite your intentions. The shoulder is a complex system with many types of injuries that can happen to it and certain structured rehab plans are made by healthcare professionals to get you to your best days again.
But one thing is for sure, if it hurts, go with your gut and stop. Good luck and best wishes with your recovery!
I have an issue wiht my left shoulder subluxing but there is nothing structurally wrong with it. My right shoulder started out like this and then through a few violent sublaxations i tore my labrum, and shoulder capsule. I then had it surgically stabilized(6-month recovery), but 1 week after surgery i slipped in the shower and felt like i tore all the sutures. fast forward 3 years and some really big impact separations and i finally went back in for an MRI- turns out i have 2 tears(front and back) of my labrum, a torn shoulder capsule and a partially torn rotator cuff.
At each step my Surgeon(Is the Raiders, A’s, Sharks team DR.) has recomended rehab first, and putting on muscle around the joint(pec, Delts, Lats, Traps etc) has helped just as much if not more than all the rotator cuff and small muscle stuff. Also, because i essentially have nothing left to tear, i am allowed to literally do anything, the only limit is my pain tolerance. And putting off surgery will have no effect on the likelyhood of success when i do get it surgically fixed.
Personally, when i have a reguler subluxation i take 1 week off from anything upperbody, and then 1 week after doing really light weight, gaining ROM back and grooving the new pain free slot that my arm has to travel through on upper body excercises.
If the shoulder keeps getting better in 2-3 weeks then you havent done anything structurally wrong; but you are playing with fire. One of these days you will sublux your shoulder and tear something up that could seriously put you out. It is absolutely the best thing for you to get it scanned and talk out some options with your surgeon. Only then can you make an informed decision on how to far to push through your pain, and if surgery now is a good option. But you have to be honest with yourself: have you ever really prehabbed/rehhabed your shoulder consistently for a 2+ month period? Only then can you say if rehab(which should be your 1st and 2nd option) has worked for you or not.
