congrats on your snatch!!! i tend to gas when it is cleaning and jerking time, too. i really hope that you get some boring rehabby exercises that sort you out.
um… if external rotation gives you grief… maybe working on internal rotation will help? i don’t know… but i found that to be the case with my hips / legs. took me ages to discover that. not sure if it works more generally with respect to working the opposite movement helping things out.
I can commiserate - my right shoulder’s been busted for 20 years. Left shoulder likes a good piss and moan too, on occassion. I have horrendously stiff neck and upper back no matter how much massage and foam rolling I get. Urgh. Hope you feel better soon.
Thanks Alexus, I should be happy about the snatch but also its making me mad. Because I knew I wasn’t 100%, so I thought that my snatching would actually be difficult and it was better than I expected. I don’t even give a rat’s ass about jerking, if the physio said to layoff the jerking off I would be fine with that, but um I need my right shoulder for snatching. I’m just hoping in the next couple of weeks I can work on my snatch still, even if I just have to stay at 25kg, want to get that bloody technique down! Will try some internal rotation stuff too.
Cal, well I guess I just wanted to keep you company in the old injury area, I know you are having foot problems. My shoulder has been at me for only half that time, really thought it was doing better. I had just said to myself how fortunate I have been because this time last year I could barely raise my arm above my shoulder.
Anyway supposed to go diving tomorrow, think I’m going to need A LOT of help getting up on the boat, its a ribbed boat so you have to leap up onto it from the water. I wanted to buy some cookies to make me feel better (& they were on sale) but I resisted. I’m drowning my fears in some cottage cheese and hot mustard instead. Anyway I’ll snap out of it… eventually.
Hey MiM, diving can be dangerous in some ways be so rewarding and relaxing too. That’s its all about safety first. My club is extremely safety conscious. Glad you were able to overcome the fear for at least a little bit so your son could learn to enjoy the ocean. I love everything about the ocean, the sound of the waves, the smell, the extra magnesium, but most importantly the yummy seafood.
I had the best dive yesterday, despite my shoulder. Well good for the part that we usually dive in. We dove a wreck, viz was great, loads of big fish, I saw a huge conger eel, and I did the Titanic ‘im flying’ scene off the bow (don’t like the movie though). Did my bit & picked up some trash. The boat ride was 45 minutes to get there so my shoulder was a bit jostled by the time we got back on shore.
My shoulder is feeling better thankfully, been rolling, icing and TENS machining it. I was undecided the whole weekend but I’m seeing my physical therapist, can’t afford it but I would be kicking myself if I didn’t.
I gots weights to lift!
glad to hear that you had a great dive and that your shoulder is feeling a bit better. i’ve never dove, not even snorkeled. used to love swimming - but never really got back into it after hurting my feet. i can’t kick properly with them anymore and flippers would make it worse since they aren’t very straight anymore. have seen some amazing underwater pictures my friends have taken, though. diving a wreck sounds absolutely amazing.
i’m confused about your snatch. you got a PR even though you weren’t feeling 100%? that means you have a lot more in you! i’m sure it is frustrating that you are stuck to low weights. my experience is that messing around with low weights is what makes the higher weights simply fly up effortlessly when you are able to try them, though. still, it must be very frustrating. really hoping your shoulder comes right for you soon!
so awesome on the dive - I’m doing a wreck dive next month to get my deep dive and wreck dive certs. I can’t wait to get into gear! it’s been like 6 months…

alexus, Im sure they have special fins, I’ll ask around, you can’t be the only with problems who likes a good swim. Yeah I really thought my snatching was going to suffer that day. With the weight I just need to focus on technique and never mind what ever the hell my coach puts on the bar, just forget that the amount is there.
nlmain, ooo, how deep are you going? yeah I remember the mobility but just had a session with my physical therapist who gave me a bit better advice on some shoulder work than their physio.
Powerpuff, love snorkeling too, I kind of miss it, we do alot of snorkeling beginning of the year. I often have to try to give back to the ocean since I love its food.
Went the physical therapist, even though this morning I was feeling better. Glad I went, he started with needling (something he’s just added to his therapy sessions) then he WORKED me over! Oof so tired from it. But nothing major is damagaed, my infraspinatus is tight and inflammed that’s all, poor little thing. Anwyay will be back for some more PW but I’m tired!
MiM, lets see he stuck some needles in the sore part and I think 2 more on my spine. He then basically just poked and prodded all the small muscles/areas of the shoulder really hard in certain areas until it relaxed themselves, he then started yanking around on my muscles. I went home and iced it, still feeling tight and everything but I didn’t sleep well at all last night, not for the last 10 days anyway. Nothing like what you go through though sO I can’t complain too much.
Not sure what I’m going to do tonight at the gym, I’ll give my coach the info from therapist and go from there. I gotta get my fricking butt in gear with swimming and some cardio. Sunday’s dive was the last of the ‘relaxing’ dives, we are going into more specific training, our last examine we have to do all this monkey work in the water and lead a dive.
We laid off any major use of shoulders. But I got to work on SQUATZ! We went up to 55kg, 14 (plus losing the damn box he insists I use) more to go till I’m back where I was. The box came up to 2 inches below my knee caps, but I want to take off the training wheels. Squat was easy enough, except the last rep when I didn’t focus on my right hip. He’s still not happy with it, we did these
and my right hip is still considerably weaker than the left. We then did some glute activation with bands, my ass was on fire, then some core work. The intensity of that workout felt great, got all nice & sweaty and a good whack of endorphins.
My shoulder is still tight and achey, went to sleep with TENS machine on me, really need a massage. I keep getting good and bad news about money, I just hope it all evens out.
Oh and my hang snatch was actually 28kg, I’m sure 30kg will be just around the corner. I have to get a bit more focused oly lifts being a sport and not just working out. Been awhile since I’ve been in the ‘sport head space’.
MiM, they were not the easiest and I couldn’t get down as far as the video on the right side. Mrs Humpty Dumpty still needs work.
Nothing to report here. Like a sleepy head that I am, I fell asleep when I got home, missed pool and even doing some yoga. I’m feeling a little run down, I think I got a twinge of those weird body aches again, I hope not, I’m hoping its just some leftover DOMS. Those pains have not been back for the last 4 months now and I don’t want them back.
Gonna try to do a quick home session tonight, then I have to pack to leave to go do some more diving, should be 5 dives over the weekend, gonna be even more tired. Ah I think TOM is coming soon too.
I do my split squats with the back foot on a bench but my front foot on the ground. I found I got a better stretch that way (and was less likely to fall over, being the clumsy sod that I am).
I need to lose my box as well but I find I squat high if it’s not there - I lack the confidence to go lower unless there’s something under my arse.
Hope you’re OK, I’ve just had a cold and I was aching on the first day. TOM doesn’t help either as just before it your endorphins drop off. I’m over the cold now but my tits are tender so I know I have that particular joy to come. Hopefully it will hold off until after the theme park this weekend.
What a disaster of a workout!!! Blah, I talked myself into doing a quick session at home, by bribing myself with loads of caffeine. I won’t even bother say anything about the warm up, that was bad from the start. Had to go down to 7.5kg, yes that’s correct 7.5kg because my shoulder wasn’t happy at all raising my arms above my head.
OH was kinda painful towards the front. Anyway here is a brief snippet of that ugh session. Still don’t know what to do with my hips between the pulls. And didn’t have the usual box set up, which was kind of distracting.

Anyway leaving tomorrow for another weekend diving, not a relaxing one either have to through all the parts I will have to go through on in Sept when an examiner and an examiner of the examiner tests me. Ugh one is diving down to 20 metres without a mask and putting it on under water, another is towing one of them as well as leading a dive. I know I know its what I want to do but I feel moany & irritable today!
Hey Cal, ya know mine are tender too right now. Yes please I hope for both of us IT holds off till after the weekend, don’t want another diving expedition with it.
We were doing the bench bulgarians before, guess he wants me to try something new, the new way did feel like it was getting more of my hip and adductor stabilisers, at least on the right side. B
