Oh my god! Do want! I was just thinking about how nice it would be to get leg warmers so I don’t have to wear pants to the gym. Does she have a pattern? Maybe I can get my mom to make some.

It’s not the same, I want something to last me from home to gym, that I can then take off. I don’t wear shorts. Like ever, for anything. Is knee socks with capris a doable thing? I just want my calves to be warm during car ride to gym, dash from car to gym.

I doan know if its doable… but I HELLA DO IT![/quote]
Hmm, I do have a lot of baseball socks. I may try this. I’m going to look insane with my little barefoot shoes and baseball socks on. It might help shake my fan though.
Sorry for the hijacks Techno! (do we have a nickname for you yet?)
I wear leg warmers to and from the gym! Its a 20 min walk for me, and with the cold weather my little ankles get chilly!
Its so funny to hear what people feel comfy in at the gym. I can wear booty shorts in public, but just can’t do it at the gym. I also normally don’t wear socks with my Oly shoes. And I’m a leggings girl, so no DL socks for me, altho I have mounds and mounds of soccer socks…lol! Plus I wear my hair down when I lift, unless I Oly. So many strange habits, right? You should see all the crazy shit I have to do pre-game day! Legs must be shaved, I can’t have any whisps in my face, must wear my fundies (specific underwear for soccer!)…lol!
Nice work on the snatches! Dont you love it when they feel smooth and easy?!
Hey Calsies, thanks. Yeah I think it’ll be awhile until my jerk can match up with my clean.
Patches, I’ll send you a PM. But hijack away, (and you can call me anything you want) as long as its not religion and politics, or about my unpolished toes. Although now that its winter & no diving (polish & diving don’t mix), could probably get them polished.
Ah Hallows you so cute. I always think a bit of colour is good for the gym. Things get grotty enough.
Maschy, yes its nice when they feel smooth. Although yesterdays snatching was a bit frustrating. The bar was going up just fine, my normal coach wasn’t there. One of the other guys kept saying how I wasn’t keeping my hips down long enough before I rise. Kinda messed up my mojo, but it was advice. Also since my coach wasn’t there, dont know if my jerking was ok or not. Think my cleans were ok. I thought I’d enjoy the last session since I was on my own but meh…
Oh I missed the leg warmers conversation! I am a new convert to leg warmers and if you have a pattern for those I wouldn’t mind it either (they are awesome, btw!) I like the arm warmers too—I wear them to run in but haven’t busted them out in the gym yet, someday, I am sure!
Can you tell me more about your gym and coaching? How you found your gym and what the set up is… like how much you pay and how the sessions are run? Also is it with an eye toward competing or what? Tell me MOAR right MEOW!
EDIT: By how the sessions are run I mean how many people is the coach working with at once, how long they last, etc.
Hallowed, I kind of lucked out on this place and coaching. I was going to another place, although not consistently (kept feeling like I was re-learning everything) because it was so far. And the place never felt home-like enough. I did really like my coach though. Then I kind of met up with this other chick that does oly and she invited me to join her coach. It was then I decided to actually switch places as this place is about 15 minutes away from me.
I didn’t realise at the time but the coaching is included in the gym fees (if the coach of course takes you in & has time). Basically this guy has been lifting since the 1960’s, he’s 85 and I think he just does it for kicks now, since we don’t pay him. His wife passed away a few years ago, and ya know when you get older you do need something to keep you active and feeling useful. At the moment he coaches 5 people I think, tries to get them in a row or 2 per session. There are a couple of other lifting coaches though, don’t know what the deal is with them, if they are paid or not or what.
Ah my other knee is at me now. Skipped lifting yesterday, its still a bitch today.
your coach sounds similar to my coach minimal. except my coach is strangely (i think) impressed by the big rugby dudes powercleaning around 120kg (just over their bodyweight)… i think because a few of them are getting professional contracts for next year and they are young (around 20)… none of us proper oly lifters are that good at oly lifting (in the sense of making the olympic team or anything). even though people are snatching and jerking well over their bodyweight (though all the oly lifters are lighter). oh wells.
Lex…So your coach likes the young guys, eh? Ah maybe he wanted to be a rugby player when he was younger or something, besides it is NZ and your rugger buggers kick some serious ass.
Training yesterday was meh. Stupid knee. Did jerking ok, we are going to stay on 30kg for now. I got one really good one, it just felt right, like I was properly using my legs.
He had me do powersnatching since I couldn’t go into full squat mode. I feel like I’m cheating though. He put me on a low weight though, thought one powersnatches more than they full snatch?? Anyway it felt weird but I think after a few of them they started to feel ok.
We did quarter front squats with 40kg , which actually still hurt my knee. I wonder if back squatting would be better for now, until knee gets sorted.
So my lazy ass skipped the pool on Wed. Used my knee as an excuse. It’s kinda getting better, doesn’t hurt to walk just to bend.
Yesterday my coach and I just missed each other. Can’t do squat position anyway. The 2 platforms were busy, but really the guys are nice enough to get out of my way. I’m getting a few head nods hello now & then. Speak to a couple of them. Anyway a gym is supposed to feel like a 2nd home.
Practiced on jerking, the 30kg is starting to feel lighter.
Powersnatching, can’t remember if I remembered to do a slight squat at the end. And I don’t feel like I was going fast enough, since the power version is all about speeding up??
Abs
Went on bike for an easy 10 minutes to help get blood flowing through knees.
Tonight my new friend is training with me. About time, she’s been training at crazy hours for me.
My eating hasn’t been the best of late. Need to dial it in, going away for Dec, wouldn’t mind just being a little tighter.
Hmm…actually, i’m not sure on the powersnatches. I think you could technically lift more in a full snatch than a power snatch because in a full snatch you don’t have to bring the weight as high. You bring it to as high as it’ll go and then drop under it, whereas with a powersnatch the weight is able to come high enough where you don’t have to drop but just catch…not sure though! That’s a good question.
I’m sorry about your knee btw I don’t think you’re terribly off taking a few extra days to let that knee rest. Could actually do you good!
A new training friend?! Sounds fun. How’d that go?
One needs to pull the bar hard enough for it to get to lockout with arms overhead with a powersnatch whereas one only needs to pull it to shoulder height to get under it to lock out a full snatch - so Masch is right. There was a thread a while back on the Oly Forum about how much seasoned lifters full vs power lift numbers differed. From memory (probably faulty) there was around a 10-20kg difference between full and power versions for seasoned lifters (with good technique and strength). And most of them were lifting well over 100kg… So not heaps of difference… But enough for the squat versions to be the accepted technique for how to lift the most weight (e.g., utilized by all in the Olympics).
Snatches are typically limited by the amount of weight you can pull into the correct position (to balance yourself under). So the stronger and more accurate your pull the more weight you should be able to lift. Nobody (except me aargh!!!) finds the squat up to limit their snatch
Broz said something about ‘the person who fails to stand up their snatches should either be laughed out of the gym or chained to the squat rack for a month’.
My knee’s started bitching too. And my diet has relaxed. A lot. I even ate fish and chips last night, on a whim. I feel a bit flabby and need to get that shit sorted - I don’t want a repeat of last December where I piled on a shit ton of weight and didn’t lose it again until the summer. I think it’s quite instinctive to eat more in winter - that’s when food should be scarce and we’re trying to survive (or would be if we didn’t live in modern society, at any rate). Food also produces feelgood hormones to make up for the lack of sunshine-induced wellbeing. And on top of that there are all the celebrations - Christmas, mostly in this country but also Thanksgiving for the US ladies. Not an easy time to stay lean.
