Yeah I suppose I get looks sometimes too, but 2 diving clubs use the pool so its no unexpected to see people with masks, of course they are not just swimming with them.
So I managed to use some type of handles to widen the grip on the bar. It hurts and digs into the web between my thumb and pointing finger but eh well it works. Now I wasn’t paying too much attention to my hips, etc so things may look a bit off, but I was concentrating on doing the explosive part at the hip hinge, now that I can get the bar in the right position with my arms. I have to say it felt a whole lot smoother. I’ve been exploding too soon when pulling off the boxes.
when i first learned to snatch i needed to use the 10kg preloaded bar because i wasn’t strong enough for the oly bar. took me a while to realize that the preloaded bar wasn’t long enough. it wasn’t until Carl Darby suggested i widen my grip on the Olympic bar that I realized i’d had it too close for a while now. still have issues sometimes because if i wrap my whole hand around the bar vs just hook the first joint of my thumb it alters things. think i’ve got some work to do on getting my grip width right, too.
glad it is feeling smoother. i think it is looking smoother, too. haha at you canning over backwards.! farmerbrett has some wonderful falling over backwards ones, too. i’ve got a couple too, to be sure
Yeah its funny but my little place isn’t set up for failures, but I’m gonna add s’more weight this evening, but still keep it under most I’ve lifted in the gym. Excited to see what other tidbits I can learn/work with today from the vids.
The only thing is my right knee decided to start bugging me. It has occassionaly but nothing serious. The bulgarians I did on Friday just didn’t feel right, so I stopped between sets. Might just do split squats this week. And the TENS machine seemed to make it worse.
Did lots of cleaning over the weekend, small bit of yoga and just took a nice glute actived walk. I even managed to make and pack some food for work today.
I think its hurting between the quad tendon & the patella. Wonder if it could be a tight ITB, I’ve been working the right leg a bit more than the left to bring up my right hip stabilisation. Maybe doing different types of exercises for the hip without involving the knee so much this week???

I would pay attention to what makes it hurt. Be sure to stretch really good after…and do dynamic warm up type stuff before. (if you aren’t already)
I got the stretching lecture…I always blew it off. (bad Betty!)
I guess the key to all this lifting stuff, is to take care of shit BEFORE it falls apart. I know lifting is good for us, it makes us stronger, etc…
But it’s the little things that we ignore that we think we don’t need. At least for me.[/quote]
Yes m’am! I have a bit of extra time to myself this evening so will do lots o dynamic warm up and stretching. Will see how I go today but tomorrow I might stay off the knee, it only hurts when bend it to go up and down the stairs, oh yeah and squatting.
I just looked at my last vid again, still a few things to correct but I have to say the bar trajectory from boxes seems the most consistenly bang on it has been in my recordings.
Widening the grip…such a little thing.
vid moved to hub
Meh, nothing really to remark on this (except the lack of lighting), my knee goes all wobbly at the end. Only noticed later that I didn’t have the camera at a good angle with the bar. Did more reps at a heavier weight and I can see why some do singles, was tired. I should at least stick with triples as my coach likes to do. But I find that my memory is like a gold fish, certain things seem to click if I do a number of reps within a set, but can forget if I take a rest in between. I think I need to look at some vid instructions on keeping the hips down, don’t think its quite clicked with me yet.
Knee is still at me, although after I unwrapped it after snatching it felt fine, could bend it & everything, until a couple of hours later when I went to lie down on the couch, it started again. Think I’ll take it easy on the lower body tonight.
So I started the lift bending all the way down this time, with trying to maintain contact with my thighs on the way up (like in the Pendlay vid). Was a little slow trying to get used to it, but all in good time. Still had to wrap my knee, its not getting worse so that’s a plus, at times it even feels better. Plan on having a longer session tonight.
Then went to gym just before the pool, only did 2 sets of good mornings (at least that doesn’t bother my knee) & arnold presses. We then had a few snorkel drills to do in the pool, interval style, 2 lengths fast & 2 lengths slow. I actually started to enjoy it, especially since I didn’t have to keep count of my lengths, but then after 20 minutes was slowly getting bored again with swimming in the pool. Really noticed that my right leg was not finning properly, couldn’t engage the hips without bending the knee too much, just as I had noticed last week. Really don’t want to go back to physical therapist, or actually really can’t afford to.
I need new clothes too, starting to look like a vagabond. And I hate shopping, they put so many stupid things on clothing.
do you wrap your knees? quite a few guys in my club do. they say it only helps keep them warm, but that seems to help the joints.
i probably should do more triples. i get lazy about doing singles, i think. need to work on getting things more consistent / reliable and i think triples are better for that.
nlmain, yes m’am I actually just rested & iced it yesterday. Went and bought a knee strap too, that wrap was getting on my nerves.
alexus, the triples tonight will be dedicated to you. Yeah I know ballerinas use wraps for the same purpose, might give it a shot and make a fashion statement at the same time.
Disaster session. Wound up power snatching a few times, knee felt fine but body would just stop before I got under the bar. Was a bit wound up before I got home anyway, which didn’t help the focus.
Decided to work on my grip (surprising how fast it goes on me, guess I have not been carry around diving tanks of late), so put more weight on the bar than I can snatch and just lifted the bar up along the thighs from the knees. Knee still a bit iffy, so didn’t do any bending, but starting to feel better. Then did some shoulder & wrist work.
So they’ve changed the coaching times to Mon/Wed/Fri’s, which I can’t do Mon or Wed, unless I rotate the pool times on Wed. Ah I’ll see how I get on. I might be getting an actual oly bar for home, and then there is always the option of using the new gym’s oly bar, depending on what the crowds are like (I really hate crowded gyms, just can’t cope). Maybe Sundays would be good, since it seems like diving season is over. The oly coaching is actually done in a private part of the gym.

—Sorry its so dark, getting electric stuff done in next couple of weeks---- @3:30 -ooops! @4:20 -blah!!! @5:30 -had to start with singles
Not the heaviest I’ve ever snatched but the heaviest I have done at home with my pain-in-hands set up, so essentially the heaviest I’ve snatched in at the very least 1.5 months. I’m feeling it in the upper body this morning, that’s for sure. Had a few wobbles with the knee, well actually with my entire right side including a couple of times with the arm lockout. But I noticed I’m not jumping back as much.

Thanks Lex.
Yeah it’ll work out, I’ve just had in my head my scheduled weeks days for the next few months, this just threw a monkey wrench in it.
–new update–
Ah actually this other girl that I kind of know who does oly lifting, think she won the nationals or something for something or another (I know I’m such a doof!), she trains with a coach at a place that is so close to me. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!! Decisions decisions! I’m not sure about the times though.
haha i got a deja vu moment with my cleans today of ‘wah! i’m not really sure that i want to get my ass down under that!’
seriously, though, looking good.
hope your wrists and knees are feeling good tomorrow. remember you are doing twice the work in needing to lower things (i find my body gets hammered much harder with 30kg that i need to lower compared to 35kg that i can drop).
i think you start to chuck it a bit at the second pull (which is what i tend to do, too). so instead of the bar gradually gaining momentum through to the second pull there is a bit of a stop then start thing that happens. really nice work, though
sounds like going someplace closer might be a plan if the schedule works out… the main virtue of my gym is that it takes me 15 minutes to walk there (if i hurry). i am a bit worried about how motivated i might feel to get to the gym if it is significantly out of my way… pretty sure i wouldn’t train nearly as much…
Knee feeling much better but not 100%, I had a massive head & neck ache yesterday though from the snatching. I think your right, Lex, about the having to lower the weight, unnecessary straining. Was going to do yoga but wound up just sitting on the couch, work wasn’t great either. Might do some yoga tonight before some prehab work and the pool, need to put things back in sort.
Thank you Lex for your observations. Yeah I noticed that start/stop/start thing too, only makes it harder to get the damn weight up! Its mainly because I am focusing on where I need to use control then explode so I think it’ll eventually get smoother once I feel like I can get that into my motor skills memory. But probably not a good thing to get used to as it’ll make it harder to get out of the habit. Also Koing noted that I need to punch the bar up with more force, I might have to ask him about that again as I can’t really seem to get my little head around it.
Mmm, seriously thinking of a closer gym. And this chick is like a weightlifting cheerleader, she loves it (she’s pretty damn strong too), not to mention she also does her own personal training (not oly though) so I could get a program from her. Would be nice & super motivating to lift with a strong chick, her last comp think she snatched a few kilos above her weight.
Actually I’m going to watch my first comp this weekend, excited to see what the fuss is about, my current/old coach is hosting it and she’ll be one of the judges. So I’ll see what the story is with training with her then.
