Sheiko--Own the Pain and Gain

Prepare for Facebook-ie sort of post…

I have not missed any workouts, frankly nothing to report other than having a pep talk with myself last week. I was feeling drained, down and unmotivated. I straightened myself out, tuned in Motorhead and didn’t leave the gym untill I hit all my goals for the day.

The big news is…I got the job I was after. I’ll be recruiting financial planners for the biggest firm in town. I’ll have a lot of autonomy to form a plan, explore new markets, ect., and build the future of this firm. I am very excited and have been out suit shopping, thanks to Shieko my fat suits don’t fit and my skinny suit is getting tight around the shoulders.

This all leads to a delema. I started Sheiko because I had the time to devote to the gym, and the rest of the day to recover, eat and sleep. Shieko routines are usually a minamum of 2 hours, plus warm-ups stretch and cooldown/sauna and some really high volume days are easily 3 hours. I am thinking of switching to either the 5 3 1 powerlifting or Stronglifts 5 x 5 because I don’t want to close the gym every other night. I know 5 3 1 is very popular here but has anyone used the Stronglift 5 X 5 and if so what should I know?

Congrats on the new job! Sounds like fun.

I know what you mean about Sheiko, it was fine for me as long as I was unemployed, but now just too time-consuming.

I’ve never done stronglift 5x5 but there was a guy at my last gym who did it, and he was a beast. so i think it probably works

congrats on the job! thats awesome!

You can always do one of the main lifts and its accessories one day, and then the second half of the session the next. This way you’re training daily. It’s just something I’ve noticed some people doing that still want to run Sheiko.

531’s great too, but I have nothing to say about any other programming

Congrats on the job.

If you like 5x5’s do a pendlay/madcoww/bill starr version.

Goto google and type in pendlay 5x5 xcel.

Congrats on the job Kraken!!!
I do Sheiko and I work. I fit it in.
Maybe scale back a little on the very long workouts. That’s what I do.
Then again, if you find something else that works for you, by all means, delve in.

So, I start the new job on Wednesday, giggity! I was so excited my wife had to remind me over the weekend that I was starting Wednesday, not today.

After a lot of research I decided to go with Stronglifts 5x5. I think I still have a lot of “new guy” growth in me so the consistant weight increases on SL seem to make more sence than the 5 3 1. They are very simalar programs, big compound lifts, quick and simple. I read in a few places 5 3 1 is geared towards the more experienced lifters and has a slower growth expectation than SL.

Do I kill this log and start fresh or keep going here? I really like Shieko and will probably come back to it when SL runs it’s course and I know how my schedual is going to be.

Congrats on the job.
Keep goin with this one. But you can go to your first post and hit ‘edit’ if you want to change the title.

Stronglifts day 1

Squats 5x5 @225
Bench 5x5 @ 135 this was too light but when I was warming up I hit 135 and it felt heavy so I stayed there but did the sets with a pause and a full speed press, probably twice as fast as I’d do normally
Barbell rows 5x5 @115

I’m using the SL app for the Iphone, very nice. I kept the rest period to a mininum thanks to the timer.

I took the advice given by Ed Cohen in another thread to narrow the squat stance a bit (I had been using a very wide stance) and they felt just as stable and took the strain off my hips. I really don’t want to be a 37 year old complaining about hip pain.

First day on the new job, things went great, typical day stuff, here’s your office, what to do and how to do it. Went to lunch with my new boss, which sort of killed my carb cycling but such is life.

Good work on the 5x5 I think you will find good gains with it, seems like a good fit.

“Stronglifts killed Boris Sheiko . . .”

“Do I kill this log . . .”

Why do I detect a homicidal tone to this log?

Congrats on the new job.

Good luck with the workout I know a lot of guys have made great gains with it.

To add to your theory, my chosen and much to my surprise current profession is as a Headhunter.

You should get together with my sister. She just published her first murder mystery novel. Is very active in mystery writing groups.

Ed Cohen is right on the money…sumo and wide squats started my hips to create a clicking noise. Are you still going 5 x 5 or switching to Madcow soon?

you disappeared! did the job kill the stronglifts star?

…And I’m back. The job is great but it is part of my job to hit social events and be the man about town. This slaughters my gym time…however, I’m getting control over that situation and re-commited to the iron life.

Did Day 1 and 2 of SL 5X5…curse worthy embarassing numbers, Squat 5x5 135, Bench 5X5 135, rows 5x5 95, but doing something is more effective than nothing.

After Day, my quads burned for days, but I’m back bastishes!

Day 2, Squats, 5x5 140, Standing Overhead Press (never did this before, felt great) 5x5 65, and DL (I was blood thirsty for DL, feeling great but stick to the GD program!) 5x1 165.

I will probably dramatically increase the weights in a week or two, I always want to make sure everything is in working order before I start pounding my body hard.

awesome glad to have you back, i’m just getting back into it as well. Feel embarrassingly weak right now.

SL Day Squat 5x5 145 (felt real easy) bench 5x5 135 (felt pretty easy) Barbell Rows 5x5 100 (really should have follwed my gut here and jumped to 135)
