Shape of Old School Bodybuilders

I for one, miss the good old days of football when the fastest player in the league ran a 4.7 sec 40 yard dash. The 4.2-.3 second 40 yard sprints these days are just awful, I much prefer the slower ones.

Now Serially, you guys like the old physiques because you feel like that’s something you have a chance of obtaining. You see the pro’s of today and are so in awe of their development that it discourages you, so you bitch about it.

Don’t be an idiot. Comparing apples to oranges.

Guys look great.

Guys running 4.2s look great. Guys who weigh 300 look like shit. Even if they have 3 percent bodyfat.

Let me guess. Your dream is to be Mr. Olympia. Good luck.

not if they are 6’5.and i just watched pumping iron to see why people here mention it so much and it just proved my point those people have a much better looking physique then any bodybuilder i seen today…but that is just my opinion so w.e floats your boat.

You are also a beginner who just started training not too long ago judging from past posts who likes combat sports. There is nothing wrong with that at all but I surely wouldn’t go to someone like you to discuss bodybuilding. You haven’t even followed it for long and doubtfully truly know much about it…including who the guys are that happen to be winning lately. Hint, none of them are in the three you listed in your first post.

does anyone have a delorian w/ a flux capacitor installed that i can borrow so i can drive myself to about 30 years from now and see where this same argument is headed? will people at some point be making the case that kai greene looked way more proportioned or impressive in 2009 than bob biggerthanabrickshithouse did at that 2039 olympia? are people going to somehow be 350 on stage, or will there be a reverse effect, due to ESPN’s constant coverage of how truly evil “performance enhancing substances” are, and we’ll end up with Mr. O weighing in at 210 or so? it’ll be interesting to see at what point Arnold is barely mentioned in this debate, and Ronnie or Dorian represents the “classic” look…

Its funny that everyone that says they prefer the “old days” bodybuilders really have no idea what bodybuilding is like today. All their arguments are pathetic, based on Jay Cutler, Coleman and Ruhl.

I met James LLewellin in person and I can say your words about him echo truth.

Great physique hasn’t he - you can really see that he is really genetically lucky (IMO), in that he has such ‘fashionable’ attachments and muscle shapes for bodybuilding.

Not to detach from the work he has done to get there of course, but - damn a good bodybuilder.

I am not sure being 4 foot tall is lucky for a man but aside from being a block of muscle I noticed also he was the shortest man as we shook hands.
I am not implying his height helps him be muscle bound because shape and the symmetry are not necessarily height dependent but his head was at level with my shoulders and I am only 5’6".
I noticed he was very compact but the quality and density, his fullness was impressive. You don’t get that from juice you get that from blood ( intensity ), sweat and intelligent training ( respect and knowledge of one’s boundaries; knowing when and how to push the outside of the envelope ).

I heard from someone who trained with him he is extremely dedicated and a true gentlemen. Also that his wife was 100% behind him.

A cool cat indeed.

Personally I like them all. I loved Sergio Oliva’s, and Serge Nubret’s, as well as Dexter and Coleman. All are impressive. They were different time periods, and different expectations. Back in the day of Arnie, they were looked at like they were weird by “normal” society. But you have to hand it to them and that era, without those guys would we have what we have today? Now today too, different expectations, ie. size, conditioning, legs, etc… But to me anyone with that level of development is impressive for what they achieved. I love old camaro’s and vette’s too, but don’t think I don’t appreciate today’s sports cars either. If you love lifting chances are you at one time or another you liked some of the old school pro’s, and there is some great physique’s out there right now too. This is what BOI should be about, and appreciating what anyone at that level achieved, drugs or not.

haha that makes absolutely no sense. You just basically called yourself an idiot because you made the same argument I just did but flipped it. Smart one aren’t you?
Not really. Apparently you were being sarcastic in saying you prefer to watch slower athletes. I stated that athletes who are running 4.2 are more aesthetic than Ronnie Coleman’s friends.

There is a point where someone can have too much muscle.

And good luck becoming Mr. Olympia. Your reason for living.

I’m sure I am not, but it would be cool to be the first.

I don’t know man, I think guys like Victor Martinez (guys? oh wait I think just one) have better proportions than Dexter Jackson. I would say his arms are too big for his torso, but then I look at the bigger picture and arm shape and size is one of the main distinctions between bodybuilders and other strength training athletes.

But to say that he is a collection of bodyparts; his body runs smooothly during the shows, no gay intended but he looks beautiful.

Do natty’s today look like old schoolers? That answer and maybe some pic evidence would be helpful to this debate.

Yes I think so, look at Jeff Rodriguez at 10 weeks out for this year’s TU for example. He weighed about 195lbs at 10 weeks out.

Are you implying that tested shows are full of cheaters, or are certain drugs allowed? Honest question.

But as with the original argument, training techniques, diet and of course drugs (yes, drugs ARE used in tested events) have all progressed dramatically over the past 40 years too… so it is any wonder that today’s tested are superior then in the past?

I am not saying a physique like Rodriguez isn’t possible naturally, i happen to know for a fact it is - just a general statement as per the post above.
