Security Staff Take Down Deaf Shopper suspected of Shoplifting

Apologies if this has been posted earlier, I had a look but didn’t see it.

I would be particularly interested to hear from anyone who lives in California who can clarify what the guard’s rights and legal powers were in this situation.

That vid was about 4 minutes too long. That being said, how many fucking times do they have to say “he’s deaf!” before they stop choking the dude out. Also hasn’t the choke hold been outlawed in all law enforcement and security circles?

Also the camera operator should have given the police a copy of the tape instead of filming non important shit at the end of the video.

Or at least edit the video he put on YouTube to just have the relevant footage.

Honestly couldn’t tell what was going on there.

This is a thread about deafness, not blindness… sheesh.

Sir that is an understatement.

Saw this earlier this week, fucking outrageous.

I guess in California (along with a few other states) a security guard can detain someone if they know that they have stolen something. Kind of like a citizens arrest. Can the deaf guy sue? Sure, you can sue for anything these days. If he wasnt shoplifting and was wrongly detained then hell yeah he can sue and would probably win.

How does a security guard get off attempting to arrest and detain someone to begin with? Especially on a public sidewalk.

That was an assault.

??? Why? 'cause I couldn’t hear what was going on and some dude was getting choked out by a security guard? I think it’s funny that X, the biggest hater this site has ever seen started calling me a hater. Maybe if he got some trim once in awhile he’d be a lot friendlier. Or dick. You know, whatever he likes.

I looked it up and it is legal in California along with some other states if the security guard has the proper credentials from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services

I always thought it wasnt legal but apparently it is

.

So would that guy in the video

I lol’d.

I don’t see many grounds for a lawsuit, assuming that the guards had a reasonable basis for believing that guy stole something. The only thing I question is why they felt necessary to choke and mount the dude on the ground as opposed to tapping him on the shoulder, identifying themselves as security, and asking him to come back to the store. I’m guessing he would have complied.

Am I the only one who feels that if I were the deaf dude on the ground I could have absolutely fucked up the security guard trying to hold me down?
