Hey bro, how’s your lifting going?
Thanks a fuckin heap for that link by the way!!
No problem mate, thinking about competing in the June 8th novice myself.

Trainings finally back on track. Minor back injury and a big dose of life I didnt lift once in february. Sucked.

From your photo’s i’d say the main difference is you’ve gained some muscle and lots some fat too! so don’t be discouraged!

Cheers dude, yeah I think I’m looking a bit leaner in the midsection. But it’s weird because my waistline actually feels tighter. Definitely need to beef up the chest.
Yeah i’ve lost some weight in the middle too, but my measurement around with a tape measure is actually bigger, but i’m pretty sure its cause i have more muscles on my back! (i could be wrong.) Its probably the same with you.

Man, I like the way you think!
“My stomach isn’t fatter… my erectors are just hulk-smashing!”
Valid point though, that could well be the case

yeah and since i can’t really get a good look at that part i can never prove myself wrong… now i’m going to go eat a dozen donuts… its ok, i’m carbloading shifty eyes yeah thats the ticket! carbloading!

It’s okay, I am just moving up a weight class.

Same. I’m moving from “cuddly” to “couch-bound”.

So you are going from SHW to 308+?

-Military press is weak, deadlift is ok, knee continues to bother me.

What’s wrong with the knee? Is it painful? Does it give out during the set?

If it’s painful then what does the pain feel like and where is the pain? Does the barbell squat hurt?

Hey bro, long time no post!

Last week, I lunged forward with my left leg and my right leg wobbled slightly and immediately got an isolated “tweak” pain from I’d guess the medial collateral ligament at the tibia attachment. This continued through my single leg work that day.

No swelling or anything, but it was sore for a couple of days then faded. I squatted a few days later without any particular issue.

But then on Wednesday I did bodyweight single leg squats for mere sets of 10, and it flared in the stabilising leg again. I continued with the second set and barely managed to finish. The pain this time spread higher to the inner, upper knee cap region. Today it’s fine, just a bit sensitive if I dig in with my fingers.

I’d rate the pain pretty low, and describe it more as a loss of strength and stability.

Barbell squat didn’t hurt, but I rested it 4 days from the first injury. I was conscious of the area in my knee, but no pain as such. Squatting today so we will see…

I’m not dead yet, just sick. On the bright side, being sick is enabling me to rest my injured knee… fuck my life. Haha

hey i’m sick too! ugh. and i’ve been able to rest my knee too! wtf…

After originally thinking I just had a flu, I have been crippled by a fairly impressive staphylococcus infection which had me bedridden for most of the last 6 days haha.

I am back at work today so I will hit the weights this evening and do some “get back in the groove” type lifting.

On the bright side I lost 3kg in 6 days… :expressionless:

Hope you are healthy now dude! I am off to physiotherapy tomorrow for diagnosis on my knee issue.

Thanks! The antibiotics are bringing me back to life slowly - still pretty shit feeling but at least I can eat and sleep now! This week I will concentrate on getting mobile again and next week back into the heavy stuff :).
Apparently this type of infection happens from being run down - probably caused by my shit sleeping patterns. I tend to not sleep until 12:30am and wake around 7-7:30. Not insanely short times, but I should try and get more sleep before midnight.

Update:

Physio says my quads are severely shortened/tightened. This is causing my patella to grind on the leg bones, creating inflammation in the joint. This explains the issues I’ve been having hitting depth on the squat recently. “Tightest quads I’ve ever seen” was his comment hahaha.

Treatment:

No leg work for 2 weeks (will be re-assessed in 7 days’ time) to allow inflammation to fade.
Quad stretching and foam rolling 4 x daily.

So yeah that is pretty gay and I am not really sure what to do. I guess next week I start doing lots of upper body work while I heal my knee and stretch my quads…

Also, once this is all over with I am wanting to do the 531 Rest Pause 6 Week Challenge.

Oh Jesus man sorry to hear that. My dad had a staph infection recently. The gym is one of the worst culprits for them, and they are becoming increasingly common (used to just see them in hospitals). Freaks me out. My dad is all paranoid about washing his hands at the gym now and showering immediately afterwards.

Oh good lord, that is bad. It is good to see that you are at least somewhat better. I wish you luck for your knees… Also you might still train your deadlifts/posterior chain (might not) if you really want to.

Disclaimer: I am 100% serious when I say that is not medical advice, nor do I have a background in medicine. Do not take the message seriously as any type of advice.

follow the physio’s advice, you won’t lose much if any strength and even if you do it will come back .

What’s up guys? Thanks for the well-wishes. I’m done with the staph infection and have been eating like a maniac to try and gain the lost weight back.

Since I cannot squat I have decided to run the Smolov Bench program - in theory this should tie in well with the timeline for my leg rehab work.

This is the program I will use:

My best tested 1RM is 112.5kg, but I have become stronger since then. For this program I am working off a realistic max of 115kg and really hoping to hit 120kg after Smolov’s three weeks of benching four days per week.

I’m using a medium-wide grip (pinkies an inch inside the outer rings) and short-pausing all reps unless otherwise noted.

13-05-13
Smolov Bench
Week 1 - Day 1

Bench Press 70%
6 x 6 x 80kg

Dumbbell Row
3 x 12 x 25kg

Tricep Extension
3 x 15 x 20kg

Bicep Curl
3 x 12 x 20kg

Notes

-First day back lifting after a 2 week layoff. Body felt weak and pathetic and I sweated like a rapist.

-Benching wasn’t too bad really. I hope my strength picks up fast or I am in for some fun times during week 2!

-The triceps extensions reminded me how weak my triceps are.

-Fucking great to be doing some form of lifting again, at last.
